Title On the Solubility of Chxomite in Sulfuric Acid.

Abstract The possibility of chromite (1) dissolution in a little
excess of H2S04 (5096) in Presence of compounds of 6-va-
lent Cr was investigated. The yield of solute Cr depends
very much on the diespersion of I. Yhe yield is 67-5%,
if the particle size was about 100?-A,-and it rises gmduml-
ly with the dispersion increase. An addition of Fe neutra-
lizes the solution. The method of using an excess of acid
was used for the preparation of crystalline ferrosulfate
and of the salt of 3-valent Cr with the necessary degree
of acidity.

Method and Working Organization for the Renewal of Topographic

ABSTRACT: Considering the immense increase in the building activity in
all sectors of national economy2 a systematic renewal of
topographic maps in series is necessary. When the renewal
of these maps was started in 1957, only a few copies of the
project of regulations for the renewal of topographic maps
on scales of I : 25000, 1 : 50000 and I : 100000 were availa-
ble. These regulations) howevers cannot be used for a renewal
of maps on a large scale. Some deliberations for the organiza-
tion and methods uf renewal of topographic maps are brought
here. The experience, particularly in 1958, showed that such
a renewal should be carried out primarily on the basis of
aerophotographic plans composed according to aerial photographs
of the latest photographic flights. In advance, the relief of
the map to be ranowed must be transferred to these aerophoto-
graphic plans. The spatial model of the landscape can be

the procedure suggested by 1.1. 1. .'rgentov and V. 1. Buraya
which also improves the quality o~ the product. Concerning
the experience in the renewal of the aerophotographic plans
on a scale of I : 10000 on 4kn basis of earlier aerophotographic
plans, reference is taken to the paper by fr. 11. Pazell-skiy
(Ref 1). All geodetic) cartocraphic, statistic, and descriptive
papers avdIable at various authorities, local organizations
and administrations, should be most carefully collected, But -
as the working experience of the topographical squads of the
MAGP shows - even under these conditions it is, in a niimber
of cases, not possible to prepare aerophotographic plans on
the basis of aerial photographs of latest photogr3phic flights
..n indoor service only. Besides, the experience shows that
the aerial photographs for the renewal of topographic maps
should be made one year before starting the iield work. The
experience of 1958 showed that the data of the aerial photo-
r,raph arrive much too late if the aerial photographio made
in the 3nme year as the renewal of the main.. Some deliberations

As part of the activities of the Kharkov zoologIsLs before
the Great October Revolution were the investigations of
the fauna of the Kharkov Area and other parts of the Ukrai-
ne and Russia, the description and systematization of the

species of the various representatives of the vertebrate
and non-vertebrate animals and so forth. In -the Post-
Ocotber perioda reoroanization of the instruction and
scientific-research work in all divisions of biology at
the university of Kharkov is being carried out. Simulta-
neously with the study of the fauna of the southern areas
of Ukraine,considerable attention has been given to the
solution of the theoretical problems of zoolo(-V and biolo-
gy, in particular those of ecology and biotsenoloa.
The work of the faculties of zoology of vertebrate and
nonvertebrate animals, entomology, and ecolo~Zr connected
with the names of A.M. Nikollsiy, P.P. Sushkin, G.F.
Arnolld, V.A. Yaroshevskiy, N.I. Kalabukhov, and others
is described in detail. A list of works (331 titles) of
zoologists of the university of Kharkov is provided.

:ABSTRACT: An attempt was made to explain the.eensitivity of the electrical can-
:ductivity of CdC12-doped CdS films to atmospheric moicture. The sensitivity,
anifested as a sharp minimum in the conductivity between 60 and 70C, is greatest

Title : Investigation of rodents and their ectoparasites in foci of lymphocy-tic
choriomeningitis

Abstract : The duration of the existence of lymphocytic choriomeningitis foci,
the species of rodents found at the foci, and their ectoparasites
were investigated from 1950 to 1952. Forty-nine strains of the virus
of lymphocytic choriomeningitis were isolated from 369 house mice,
common voles, and forest mice trapped at all seasons of the year in
residences and industrial facilities where cases of the disease had
been reporteft. No traces of the virus were found in cultures prepared
from the various fleas and ticks living on these rodents. The species
of the ectoparasites encountered are indicated. No references are
cited.

alumina was mi--ed with 1~ ZnO and fired to 14500C. to insure maximum transformation
of 'r-alumina to a-alumina prior to mixing the charge. Organic binder (not
specified) and water were added to the charge in amounts required for semidry
ramming (hand and pneumatic), and the bars were fired at 14600 to 15900. For com-
parison, bars were prepared from 77% Chasov Yar clay grog and 211C Chasov Yar binding
clay. Compared with the multigrog product, the glasL corundumi had a firing shrinkage
7 to 8 times as large, an an rent porosity 2 to 3 times as large, L.nd a resistance

to sulfate liquors 12 to 23 times as great. Sulfite-cellulose extract Is rec-
ommended as a plasticizer because of its slow decomposition within a wide temperature
range. The firing shrinkage was considerably improved by firing a portion of the
charge in the form of briquettes, grinding the briquettes, and adding the 0,,11ass-
cement grog in amounts of 50 to 86% to the original charge. On a commercial scale,
use was made of technical alumina analyzing not less than 97. not over 0.4%

S102, not over 0.06% Fe2031 not over 0.71p Na20, and ignition loss about 1.5%. As a
glass binder, cullet of ordinary composition was used. Bars were prepared by
pneumatic ramming. Air shrinkage was less than 1%. Products were fired for ten
days and held for 24 hr. at a maximum temperature of 15000 to 15201C. The pro-
perties were better than those of laboratory specimens; bulk specific gravity was
