TITLE: Methods, for the Determination of the Impact Streng h of Metals PERIODICAL: Standartizatsiya, 1960, No. 10, PP- 53-55 TEXT4. This is a report on new standards which"were enforced on January lt 1961 and replace rXT1524-42 (GOST 1524-42). The standards were worked out by the Vae aoyuznyy nauchno-iseledovatellskiy institut zheleznodorozh- nogo transporta, (All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Railroad Trans- portation) and approved by the Komitet standartov, mer i izmaritellnykh priborov (Bureau of Standards, Measures, and Measuring Instruments). ~GOST 9454-~O; "Metals. Method of Determining Impaot Strength at No'rmal Temperature"I COST 9455-60; "Metale. Method of Determining Impact Strength ,at Low Temperature". The test method and cooling conditions %ere specified, and the use of explosive liquids was forbidden. GOST 9455-60: "Metals. Method of Determining Impact Strength at High Temperatures" was worked out for the first timep and specifies tests at tempsratures up to 1000 0C and Card 1/2 Methods for the Determination of the Impact 8/028/60/000/010/015/020 Strength of Metals BO13/BO63 safety measures. The new standards are based on GOST 1524-42 in which test rods with 2 mm deep notches and a radius of curvature of I mm (Fig. 1) are specified, Apart from the "flat notches" commonly used in Went and East Germany (Fig- 4), these are the softest comparied with those used in other countries (Figs. 2 and 3). Additional test rods are permissible in excep - tional cases, namely, 5 mm deep notches with r - 1 mm (Fig. 2) and 2 mm '/ deep notches with r - 0.25 mm (Fig- 5) which were adopted by ISO. Further- more, test rods with notches 3 mm deep and a radius of I mm (Fig. 3) used in the German Federal Republic and some Communist countries are permissible. The most frequently used dimensions (10 * 5 * 55 mm) were specified for smaller specimens. For the standardization of still smaller or larger specimens, the experimental material available in the USSR is insufficient. Specimens with a cross section of 30-15 mm or 20-20 mm are sometimes used abroad, such as the specimens shown in Fig. 6 which are used in Germany for testing boiler plate. The standardization of impact test methods should be continued. There are 6 figures. Card 2/2 VOLOKHOV) A.A.; SHILYAGINA, U.N. A considerable increage in the yield point CrT as a result of agingj, acccaTa- nied by a-gradual restoraticn of the ductility area in the diagram for the inter- rupted tension of repeated tension in the same direction,, gives grounds for assuming this charactdriatic to be one of the most sensitive criteria of the tendency to age. The ultimate strength 6B changes less considerably,, with the maximum change in 6T being observed at 1000'., while that-of 6B at 1800. Men- deleyeva, v. 6, no. 1, 1961, 88-93 TEXT: As a results of work conducted at the Nauchno-issledovatellskiy institut polimerizatsionnykh plastikov (scientific Research Institute of Po- lymerization Plastics), the Okhtkhim Combine and other organizations in co- operation with the Leningrad Branch of NIlKhimmash and the Institute of Gi- proplast, an industrial method for the production of low-pressure polyethyl- ene on metal-organic catalysts has been developed with the polymerization performed both by the batch-type and the continuous process. A complex form- ed from triethylaluminum or diethylaluminumchloride with titanium tetrachlor- ide is used as the catalyst. The low-pressure polymerization of ethylene en- Bures the formation of less branched and longer molegules. The molecular weight of polythylene of low-pressure can reach 3-10 , the number of methyl Card 1/ 7 S/063/61/006/001/005/005 Prospects for creating multi-tonnage... A051/A129 groups to 19000 carbon atoms 1-5 - 3. Table 1 shows the comparative figures of the polyethylene properties in low- and high-pressure polymerization. The data show that low-pressure polyethylene has advantages over the high-pres- sure one, including a high thermal stability. The new production method of polyethylene also allows for variation in the molecular weight of the polymer and thus of its properties. According to preliminary data of the Vsesoyuznyy institut iskusstvennogo volokna (All-Union Institute of Synthetic Fiber) low- pressure polyethylene yields a fiber of higher resistance than high-pressure polyethylene and can be used successfully in the production of commercial and protection fabrics. Certain disadvantages of the low-pressure method are pointed out: 1) the need to use metal-organic catalysts; 2) the need to clean the polymers from remains of the catalyst and subsequent regeneration of the solvent, the medium of polymerization and the rinsing agent; 3) lower stability of its properties in aging as compared to polyethylene of high pressure, due to which it is used with caution in various branches of indus- try. It is expected that the higher cost of the low-pressure polyethylene production will be reduced within the current year by 6 - 20'j".. it is also pointed out that the production of the latter has been reduced in recent yew Card 2/7 S10631611006100110051005 Prospects for creating multi-tonnage... A051/A129 due to the appearance of polyolefine-polypropylene. The production of poly- ethylene by the low-pressure method and that of its polymers should reach * 406 volume of the total capacity of polyethylene production. Figure 1 is * diagram of the principle used in the polymerization process of low-pressule polyethylene production, The further development of this process involves the introduction of a 20 - 25 thousand t capacity unit. This would-necessi- tate complete automationj continuous equipment and removal of the main equip- ment beyond the confines of the plant. Calculations showed that in order to increase the productivity of the polymerization unit to 20 - 25 thousand t/year, it is necessary to increase the removal from the polymerizer of 1 m3 capacity to at least 60 kg/m3-hr. In order to create high-productive units of continuous operation at the rinsing and compression stages of polyethylEne, the centrifuge should be replaced by a series of continuous hydrocyclons, connected in sequence with the small rinsers. The general principal scheme of polyethylene processing after polymerization is given in Figure 2. The drying process is accomplished in a continuous unit according to the drying principle in a fluidized bed developed for polyethylene at the Leningrad Branch of NIIKhimmaoh, The recommended scheme results in a 20 - 25 thousand ton/Year production unit and permits the equipment to be placed outside the Card 3/7 S106~1611006100 -1/005/005 Prospects for creating multi-tonnage ... A051A129 plant on open shelves. These measures render the low-pressure method more economical. The regeneration system of the processed and washed solutions of polyethylene production includes the separation of the low-molecular pro- ducts of polymerization from the solvents and the separation of the benzene- alcohol mixtures for the formation and purification of benzene directed to the cycle of polymerization. The low-pressure method, performed in high- productive units of continuous action, sharply decreases the specific capital investm ent and cost of the product. The usual methods of tamping with clay and ce- ment did not plug the crevices. Thus the necessity arose to cement the porous zones by quick-hardening mixtures. As the conveying of quick setting concrete could not be done fast enough through one pipe, a proposal was advanced by Maksimovich, Maksimova. and Yermakov, according to which two pipes transported a cement mixture and an agent for speeding up the hardening process to the place of cementing. According to this method, a tamping device was lowered to the end of the drill stem; the cement mixture was pumped into the porous zone by the conventional manner. The author gives a description of the tamping device and its application. The process of hardening can thus be reduced from the original 48 - 72 to 12 hours. The following mixture is useds (for 1.5 - 1.6 ou m) 1,400 kg Card 1/2 of building cement of the brand "20011p 300 kg of aluminum 132-1-8/15 Method of Cementing Test Holes Under Difficult Drilling Conditions cement of the brand "500"t 800 liters of water. Waterglase (go liters) was used as an agent for speeding up the setting process. Three bore holes were successfully treated by this method. There is 1 table and I figure.
