TEXTs The design of the spark counters employed in this work
is illustrated in Figso'l and 2# In Fig.2 the notation is as
follows: I - perapexi 2 - glass; 3 - conducting layer; 4 - rubbert
5 - T102 + Lael 6 - Teflon or polystyrene, A pumping line is
provided through which the counter can be evacuated and then filled
with the required gas. The upper electrode is in the form of a
.,conducting layer of,Sn02 and its thickness is 1.7 mm. The
oVservatlon and nhatography of the spark discharge is carried out
through the upper-'electrode. The lower electrode is in the form
of an aluminium foil mounted on glass. The distance between the
electrodes is 2 mm-and depends on the size of the cylindrical

tried as the working gas, as suggested by J.E. CranBhow and
.I.F. do Beer (Ref.3j Nuovo cimento, 1957, 5, No.5, 1107).
However, air was found to be unsatinfactory.because of spurious
sparks and other effects. The final working jas was a mixture of
dry air,(dried with P205)j argon (300 mm Hg) and C2H9N at a total
pressure of 1~atmo Since perspex will gradually absorb
pyridine, it is necesmary to operate the counter with the
vapour pressure very nearly at thesaturation value.
This is ensured by introducing about I c&23 of pyridine into the
working volume in.a special container. Fis.3 shows the circuit
employed in testing and 4n officiengy measurements* The spark
counter VIC, (IS) in plaeod ~',ift.-a .*eUsaope c*"i&*4&x of two sets
of geiger counters rc (Gs). When the particle passes through the
:system a positive pulse,is produced by the coincidence) circuit
'which triggers the Trw 1-325/iL6 (TGI 1-1525/16) thyratrons. Two
pulses (with opposite polarities) are produced at the points K
and 11 when the two L-C lines discharge through the thyratrons.

They are 0.3 -Itsec long and are applied tothe platen of the spark
counter. The pulses are delayed by about 1.0 Asoc relative to the
entry of the particle. A constant clearing voltage (8 V) is also
applied across the counter. Another circuit in-which the counters
were operated with exponential voltags'pulses is'shown in Fig-36
W.E. Cranshaw and I.F.-de Beer, Ref-3)-- The mechanical counter
MC I was used to reco'rd the total number of twofold coincidences
while the mechanical counter MC.11 recordod the number of spark
counter operations. 'The spark discharge In the counter- was
recorded by the small microphone M. -Argon-filled counters have
also been ::Lnvestigated using the circuit ahown in Fig.3 9 and the

from a special oscillator. .--The second pdkrt of the prosen4- paper
is concerned with the spark counter telescope placod-in tb-
.magnetic fisld. The telescope consists ot three countors p aced
in the gap of an electromagnet, gap size 60 x 20 x 10 em3i. The
maximum field was 6300 oe. The working area of each coo or plate
was 100 x 200 mm2. The spark discharge was photograplied by three
cameras on a single film an shown in Fig-3. The notat:Lon in Fig-5

ABSTRACT: Highly aluminour bricks were built into the regenerators of an
80 t open-hearth furnace, where they were tested. The open-hearth
furnace worked with solid one-hardened material and mas heated
with oil. The bricks, which were produced by the Semiluksk plant
for refractories, were placed into the 12 top rows of s4r-head-
pieces, where temperatures of 1350-14200 and 15C00 were attained.
These bridics vmro foufid to be superlor to fire clay brlclx. Further-
more, the cheralcal COMP03ition and propertici of highly aluminou:s
bricks are given as well as their structure. According to calca-
Iated data these bricks contain 61% mullite, 22/6 siliceous glass,
and 17A' corundun, which mast be looked upon as unfavorable because
siliceous glass has a low viscosity when liquefied. The presen,:;e of

tween clay and technical alumina. The bricks contain much corundum,
not enough mllite, and an excess quantity of glass, Maich reduces
their slag-resistance. The bricks vr-thstood 705 smelts, i.e.twice
as many az ordi:-ary f ire clay bricks. After having been used the
bricks of the uppermost rovr had a considerable amount of slags and
shomd moh vrear; three different Z011C3 could be distinguished (see
table) , whien are described in detail. The following conclusions are
arawn: 1.) The highly aluminous bricks shovied great durability and
were found to be superior to Foraterite-, Chromodinas- and fire clay
bricks. 2.) The main cause of vmar is the destruction of their wul-
lite phase and the 3imItaneous foniation of phases of low resist-
ance at high temperatures. The phases Feo.S104, Zn2S104 and FeO.Fe203
are concern-ed here. Better results may b~ expected from using re-
fractory-mullite, corundum-niullite, or corundum products, which con-

ABSTRACT: In the Izhors works chromoaluminous bricks were tested which
had been produced in the Semiluki refractories works.
T. S. Lebedeva and V. F. Zamah assisted in this investigation
(Ref 1). The test bricks were built into the upper 3-6 rows
of the checker chambers of two Open-hearth Furnaceo*vhich..vere
-operating on a solid layer and were heated with mazut T4&
maximum temperature in the checker chambers was 1400-;550"' and
the stability of the test bricks amounted to 368 to 377 melts.
After 368 melts samples were taken from these bricks, and it
was found that those from th; first checker row were consider-
ably scorious and bloated. The chemical composition of these
bricks is given in the table and shows that they were con-
siderably saturated with iron, silicon, calcium and alkali
metal oxides after 368 melts. Conclusions: The chromo-

considerably intergrown with melting dust after work and show
cracks and bloatings which cause a premature aging of the
Martin furnaces* In order to obtain better working results
of these bricks in the checker chambers a reliable method of
their cleaning must be devioed, the heat resistance of the
bricks increased and their bloating reduced. There are I

Integral equation. The selection of the maximum permissible displacement in the eval-
uation of.autocorrelation and spectral density functions was made using the Jukey meth-r
od (1958). The study shows that 1) in many cases, temperature and current changes are
characterized by periodic oscillations; 2) temperature and current oscillations of
12.4 hr periods are activated by tidal forces; 3) oscillations of 13-25 hr periods are
of. inertial type; and 4) oscillations of 30-33 hr and 70-80 hr periods are stimulated
