On Certain Factors Influencing the Rate of Propagation of Elastic Vibrations in Rocks. Recle4ved: 5 / 1957 Reviewed: 6 1957 The present paper investigates one of the most important factors influencing the velocity of layers, namely-the static stress of higher layers. For the study of the connection between the velocity and static stress the authors carried out measurements of velocity rock samples which were subjected to different pressures. In labora- tory investigations of the propagation of'longitudinal elastic vibrations an impulse supersonic saimmoscope was used. From the laboratory investigations discussed here and from the results of seismio observations in drill holes the following inferences can be drairn; The static atreon of higher layers influences the proper- ties 9:1 the different disponitions considerably@ The higher the stress, the higher in the propagation velocity of elastic vibrations in rock. If the rock resembles a perfect elastic body, velocity depends only upon static stress and not upon geological processes On'Cerljain Factors Influencing the Rato'ef Pro- PA - 2653 pagation of Elastic Vibrations in Rooks. which have taken place in this region. Rooks differing from these perfect elastic bodies have a remanent deformation. That is why the propagation velocity observed does not only depend upon the depth of the layer but also upon preceding geological hist*ry. The propagation velocity of rocks of equal age in different regions can therefore even be different if they are located in the same depth. A detailed analysis of velocities in rooks may offer in- dioations as to the.goological structure of the regions investigated and ad to major disturbances in depositions. TITLE: On Us Propagation Velocity of Longitudinal Elastic Waves in .Rooks and Its Dependence on the Static Load and on the Humidity PEUODICAIL: Tr. In-ta geol. nauk. AS USSR, Ser. geofiz., 1958, Mr 2, pp 330 - 137 ABSTRACT: Invostigating the effect of the load on the propagation velocity of elastic waves, the authors exposed a rook specimen with cubic forin to a one-sided'compression by means of a hydraulic press. The velocities of the supersonic waves were measured in intervals of pressure of 20 kg,/cm2. The velocity of wave in sandstone in- creased by 5 m see-1. atm for the pressure increasing from 0 to 120 k&/cm2. Increasing the load from 120 to 4JP kg/cm2 causes an insignificant increase of the velocity, but a further increase of the load beyond 420 k&/cm2 causes a decrease in velocity. Under Card 1/3 a pressure of 610 kg/cm2, the specimen collapsed. The similar so'V/169-59-5-4384 On the Propagation Velocity of Longitudinal Elastic Waves in Rocks and its Dependence on the 3tatla.Load and on the Humidity course of behavior of the veloolty was observed by testing lime-stone, but the values of load corresponding to the points of inflection of the curve, and also the values of velocity were different. The observed variations of the velooity'correspond tot 1) The decrease-in the porosity under the pressure effect; 2) the redistribution of the elementary particles of the rock. 'A de- crease in velocity.with a further increase in pressure can be explained by the formation of cracks. A certain dependence exists between the density of the rocks and the propagation velocity of the elastic waves. It is possible that this dependence mey be used for practical purposes. In halite specimens, -the velocity of longitudinal waves perpendicular to the applied load decreased considerably'with increasing pressure; but in the plane parallel to the applied load, the velocity insignificantly decreased. The saturation of the rock specimen with water increased the velocity; but the variations of velocity In chalk and for coquina were smaller than in less porous 3andstone. The investigation of the variation of velocity under multiple cycles of loading and unloading showed that a residual deformation Is.not observed in dense rocks Card 2/3 SOV/1-69-59-5-4384 On.the Propagation Velocity of Longitudinal Elastic Waves in Rocks and Its Dependence on the .13tatic Load and on the Humidity (sandstone). In more porous rooks the value of the velocity increases in comparison to the Anitial velocity in consequence of the residual deformation after taking off the load. Be repetitive pressures, velocities increase again and attain h:gher values than during the first cycle of loading. Con- sequently, it can be assumed that the veloolty of propagation of elastic waves in rooks depends on the geologic history of the region in question, In regions where numerous changes of sedimentation and of denudation occurred, thei rooks were submitted to a greater compression and must be characterized by a higher"velocity than the similar rooks in regions where the change of the pro- cesses took place not so frequent. Dopovidip no. 5, 19611 016-619 TEXTt The present work is a part of the photometric plan of Pare- -nago.,to investigate the Milky Wayp performed at the Main Astronomi- cal Observatory AS UkrSSR* It-gives the results of one selected area, with center a = 18h 50mv 8 = + 50 of the size of 36 sq. degr. The catalogue holds photographic stellar magnitudes from 9M - 13 8 In of 5800 stare. and photo-red stellar magnitudes.from 8m - 13M oi about 7000 stars. Observations were made by the astrograph with two cameras, on the Agfa-Astro piates, with 30 mins. exposures* The photographl.c magnitudes of the compared stars were taken from Card 1/3 .25h88 8/021/61/000/005/007/012 Photographic and:photo-red D215/D304 HBR-01011 In general the measurement was completed on three plates, but for the starn for which the.mean square was greater than 0.06 the fourth one was used. On the photographic plates 6.50 from the center is present the standard of UBY system - the star cluster NGC 6633. The blue magnitudes of its stare are connected by formula I ph = B - 09175 + 0.088 /B - V/ (1) with -the international scale; they were used to test the scale of the catalogue. Photo-red magnitudes were ob-tained from the Agfa ISS plates; obtained from a short-focus camera of the triple-came- ra astrograph, iffith an orange filter and the maximum of pwmability near 7200 A and with an exposure of 30 min. The stars of KPS sys- tem were used as standardstars. The mean square error for photo- grapnic and photo-red magnitudes equals 0-04* At present, invest!- galions are being continued for the photovisual magnitudes of the stars of this area. The main aim was to obtain such a combination of emulsion and filter which will directly produce the internatio- nal photovisual scale. This is achieved by a combination of Agfa Card 2/3 25488 B1021161100010051007XO12 Photographic and photo-red D215/11304 ISS plates with filter ZhS-12 (3K0-12) (Abstractor's notet ZhU not explainedj; standard etarst as in the previous case, were stare of cluster NG06633o Tor the controlp and to find the field error, pic- tures were taken Df 'the NP3 systems The photovisual. catalogue of star magnitudes wan finished in 1960o There are 3 figures and 6 re- ferencest 2 Soviet-bloc and 4 non-Udviet-bloo. A progressive increase in the relative content of the protein-bound thiol 5mups was found as rollows: normal and granulation tissuc, fibrous tissue surrounding the granulation, sarcoma cells, and the tissue forming I he tumour capsule. As compared to the normal connective tissue, the value of the nitio SH:SS is lower in the tissue surioundi" the sarcoma and still lower in the sarcoma itself; on the other hand, it 'is higher in granulation tissue and In the surromoding tissue. Orig: Pub Folia morphol., 1958, 9, No 1, 57-61 Abstract In the skin of rats immediately after irradiation with 2400 r, a clear decrease of the content of SH-groups and an increase of connections S-S were noted. It is assumed that under the influence of irradiation., SH- groups turn out to be oxidized to the S-S connection. From the Author's resume. DNA were discovered according to the method of Felgen, RM according to the method of Brauhe. The inten- sity of reactions vas determined microphotometrically; the intensity of metachromasy beta by means of metachro- matic index.
