TITLE: Frequency distortions of seismic signal in a three-component seismic bore

SOUMEt Geolosiya i seofizika, no. 3, 1964s 154-156
TOPIC TAGS.- seismic survey., seigmia signal,, signal frequenc.Y frequency distortions
seismic receivers well surveying, seismic detector SES 3
ABSTRACT: Three different methods for instrument arrangement! in &,w*11 were
,studied to determine their effect on the frequency distortion6 of seismic signals.
Such distortions are caused by movements of the instrument, during the registration
process. The asymmetrical installation of the well-surveying apparatus shown in
Fig. 1 of the Enclosures produced the beat results. In Uxis case distortions in
the direction of the X-axis occurred at frequencies which were not, met in the usual
frequency interval of a seismic survey. It was assumed that:~signal distortions.
were causod by the rotary vibretion of the appardtusuith respect to the lind.of
contact between the instrument frww and the wall of the well. From this standpoint
it seemed more advantageous to place the horizontal detectorto eccentrically with

respect to the X-axis (that of the compressive force direction). It:was proved
experimentally that the system shown in Fig. I vibrated wiLh one degree of clearance
under the action of an impulse fcwce. The analysis of such vibrations was made by
A. A. Yablonskiy and S. S. Noreyko (Kurs teorii koblebaniy. Wya'shaya shkola!',
1961). A more detailed study of the seismic record distortions was made during the
laboratory testing of the three-component seismic detector BBSI-3 under stationary
conditions. Three different ways of instrument arrangement in the well (see Fig. 2
of the Enclosures) were studied at dISferent, strengths of the spring compression.
The frequency characteristics of the spring device In this instrument.are also shown
in Fig. 2. Here curves 1 and 2 indicate the readings of theyor'Zoical.and the
horizontal detectors (oriented along the stress direction). Curves*3# h.. 5. and 6
correspond to the detector oriented perpendicular to the compression axis for the
following cases: 3 - the instrw4ent was pressed with its two rigid ~supports against
the well wall; tiie supports checked its motion in the horizontal piano (Fig. 3b);
4 - the instrument was fixed with one spring on3y (Fig, 3 the instrument
is pressed with two strong sprinvgs; 6 - the compressive strength was increased
five times, According to the rosults obtained the arrangementL (3b).oliminated
the resonance distortion., though some distortion still remainad at the frequencies

Vaccine Spores Under the Influence of Certain Disinfectant.,
PERIODICAL: Zhurnal mikrobiologii, epidemiologii i immunoblologii:, 1959, Nr 6,
PP 74-78 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: Using a Soviet EM-3, 1949 model, electron microscope with a magnification
factor of 5,000 X and an accelerating voltage of 40 kv, the authors studied
the morphological changes which occur in the spores of live STI anthrax
vaccine under the action of aqueous solutions ot formaldehyde, mcnachlora-
mine, diocide and a mixture of 17% formaldebydei'in water and 10%, mono-
chloramine (Disinfectant, mixture Ur 2). Formaldehyoe. Was found to pro-
duce no visible changes in the spores, The chl6rous preparations, how-
ever, caused swelling and a decrease in the eleatron-optical densiiy of
the spore membranes. This, according to A.Ye.A(riss.iind V.I. Biryuzova,
is evidence of a profound biochemical reconstru6t1on in the spores
connected with disintegration of the high-molecular compounds and their
transformation into low-molecular ones. D.V. zi and V.I. Vashkov have
Card 1/2 pointed out that the greater resistance of spores, compared to the

vegetative forms of microbes, is due to their possessing a strong imperme-
able membrane. The! strong sporicidal aetion of aisin~eotant mixture Nr 2,
then, may be due tc. rapid penetration of the for6aldehyde into the spores
due to rarefaction and increased permeability of;1their membranes because
of the action of the monochloramine.

TITL-7: Further experimental studies of the efficacy of chemical
anthrax vaccine

ABSTRACT: Rabbits were vaccinated with unsterilized; anthrax antigen,
formalin-sterilized anthrax antigen, and live CTH vaccine, then
infected with a virulent strain of B. anthr'aci's Comparison of
results for the three groups showed no difference in~:efficacy between
the unsterilized antigens containing viable CTH'~cells and the formalin-
sterilized antigen. The survival rate was 11 out oU12 rabbits in the
first group, 9 out of 11 in the second group, atid ll'out of 1.1 in the.
third. All the controls died. The immunogenic, leffict of the antigen*

hus neither depends on nor is enhanced by the f viable
t presen,ce o
cells in'the vaccine. Formalin-sterilized antige'n was used in the
remainder of the experiments. The dependence of1the -degree of
immunity induced on the size of the vaccination dose was also inves-
tigated in rabbits. The level of immunity was directly dependent
'on dose size: less than half (5 out of 12) of the rabbits vaccinated
!
iwith 50 mg of antigen survived infection with 100 Dlm.of vi.rulent B.
anthracis. Larger doses (100 mg 'and 300 mg) were about equally
efficacious (survival of'6 out of 9 and 7 out of,;,9.rabbits). All
the controls died. The dependence of immunogenid effict on the number
of injections into which the vaccination dose isisplit. and on the
time interval between them was studied next. A total vaccination 'dose
of 100 mg was'admLnistered in one, two, and three injection's. Up to
1.20 days following completion of vaccination, the"numVer of injections'
made no real difference in immunogenic effect. 'Mortality increased
sharply when inmunity was tested 40 day-s after completion of the
vaccination series, however. The immunity produced by live CTR
vaccine was longer lasting, and did not fall off,11sharply until 80
days after vaccination. It should be noted that~1he CT11 dosage

used (250 X 106 spores) was five times the dose recommended for
humans. The efficacy of anthrax antigen was also studied in rhesus
monkeys in which 300 mg of antigen administered in either two or
i three injections produced a somcwhatistronner immunity than did the
live CT11 vaccine in human-size doses. A final a~xperiment was con-
ducted to determine the efficacy of "native-sorbed" antigen concen-
trate (obtained by Al(011)3 precipitation of tho'culture filtrate
without first treating the latter with acid or ~,lcohol). This
process not only yields an 4ntinan which is moro, affective titan
that obtained by alcohol sorption, but producesAt in quantities
15 times greater than the yields attainable by the alcohol process.
The results of the experiment showed the immunogenia'activity of
native-sorbed" antigen to be about the same as that.of acid-sorbed
antigen. In view of the much higher yield of the native-sorbed
antigen concentrate, its use would seam to be preferable to that of
the others. These concentrates produced practitally,no local reactitn,
iunlike the formalin-sterilized antigen used in-the earlier experiments*
