TITLE. On the Possibility of Erecting Dams Without Cofferdams (0
vozmozhnosti stroitel*stva plotin bez:paremTchek)
PERIODICALs Gidrotekhnichookoye stroitel'stvo, 1958! Nr ~2$ pp 6-11 (USSR)
ABSTRACTs The article deals with possible methods'of erecting h~#a-,
technical structures without a cofferd6m. These methods are
based on experience gained in the construction of the bridge
'; I in Red China where
over the Yangtze river at the town Ukha;a I
reinforced concrete pipes were used fo:r,~ ere6ting bridge
pillars~ The essence of the method and the~;Bequence of
operations are described. A metal spatial framework is
placed between the pontoons. The frat6work serves to aet
the reinforced concrete pipes and to 96tablish a cylindrical
pile fencing. The pipes, of an outer diameter of 155 cm,'
are lowered through the framework to the alluvium and ' the,
bedrock (Diagram I). The author describes the uses made of
submerged concrete, concreting, etc. by using the above-
mentioned method, one may in a number of cafes dispense
with erecting the usual cofferdam (Dia6lqlam 3). Diagram 2

using concrete buttresses erected on the principles used in
the Ukhan' bridge. Such buttresses estAblish a reliable
junction of the dam screen with the und erwater foundation
at any depth, The author also gives the sequence of oper-
ations by which such a dam is to be oon~truated. Figures
4 - 7 show how the problem of linking a~~cofferdam with the
foundation is being solved.
There are 23 diagrams.

ABSTRACT: In milk production, in the sausage-., su4~',rax-,I1ciinned food..., and
beer industry etc. awltomatization is being intmduced in an ever-
increasing degree. In the USSR more than 70 different kinds of
food are available in form of parcels containing a certain accu-
rately weighed portion of the food concerned. Special mention
must be made of a conveyer band for pack, ing food in tin cans
A
which was developed and introduced betymen 1950 md 1952. The
band consists of 16 machines, it is ope~mted~by only 8 persons,
and it produces 3CO cans.per minute.
Nevertheless, the machinebuilding inaus, try is ntill faoaal With
the task of solving the probltm of manufacturing cans by 4,he
drawing and punching methOd3.
Special attention must further be paid the manufacture of cans

News in anodizing of alumina= parts with ... A057/A129
The present authors developed a new composition for chemical dograising of alumirmm
surface'~efore anodizing. TJ~e composition is patented with .USSR patent no. 123822j
Bulletin'for patents no. 21 (1959) and has the following propkrtyt, 1t&H2P04 +
+ Na-jwo)'L'10 - 15 9/1, 011-10 (0P-10) (PolYethYleneslycolestarY, 3 - It, temperature
80 --950d, PH 5.5 - 7.5. on-7 (OP-7) can be used also as sawlsifi4r# but OP-10 is
better soluble in the given solution. The solution can be pr6pared trom sodium
hydroxide or trisodium phosphate by adding phosphoric acid until the nooessar7 pH
is attained. Duration of the degreasing procedure depends on the contamination of
the surface, but is usually 5 - 25 minutes. Increase in temperature and agitation
accelerates the processj ultraso.-do waves improve the procedure. 'An advantage of
the present bath is the fact t1ml. a buffer solution is used in the V1 range where
no etching of aluminum occurs. The gloss of the aluminum surrace in not decreazed
by the procedure and the simple composition of the solution allows for an easy con-
trol. The control is carried (ril, by measuring thi pH, estjjc~ting, the wetting abil-
ity and by the convential metliod for determination of phosphates. There is 1 fig-
ure and 7 references: 5 Soviet-bloc and 2 non-Sovist-bloo. The references to the
English-language publications read as followst A. K. Graham, Electroplating Engi-

estanlishing the structure of 81.1,1o' of the hydrocarbctns prosent. The
gasoline is of naphthenic type, and the paraffins are ~reddiainantly branched.

Combined method for the determination of the individual hydrocarbon
composition of gasolines. Part 4, aasolin'e from the Tuymazinsk
petroleum.
Izv. AN SSSR, Otd. Khim- Nauk-, 3, 456 469, May June 1954
The results obtained from the study of thejndividual hydrocarbon
composition of gasoline with end point of 1500,.derived from low-
sulfur Tuymazinsk petroleum (Devonian horixon),jare described. The
quantitative, individual hydrocarbon composition of Tuymazinsk
gasoline and the general losses are presented in percentage by
weight values. The structure of paraffin-base gasoline derived
from Tuymazinsk petroleum and the aromatic contents of other
hydrocarbons are discussed. Toluene and M-xylene were found to
be predominant among aromatic hydrocarbons,. Four USSR references.
