TITLE: Production of aluminium. strip with micron tolerances.
(Proizvodstvo alyuminievoy lenty s mikronnymi dopuskami.)
PERIODICAL: "Tsvetil, e Metally" (Non-ferrous Mell,-~ls) 1957, No.5,
pp. 79 85 (U.S.S.R.)
ABSTRACT: This work, which was carried out in 1956 in participation
in a competition organised by the Ministry and the Sei6ntifie
and Technical Society of Non-ferrous Metallurgy of the U.S.S.R*
had as additional authors V.P. Bekhelev,~'V.G. Pikrovskiy,
N.A. Morozov and D.P. Kurbatov. The aims of the work were to
study the rolling of aluminium, strip to tolerances of + 0-005
mm by rolling in various types of mills and the produc'fion of
strip by drawing in special-installations. Tables show the
production technology used for producing~strip 0.5 mm thick
to the ordinary tolerances, results of thickness measurements
on strip for various methods of rolling, the frequency with
which measurements showed values within various tolerancea for
strip produced by the drawing method, re4jults; of thickness
Car4 :L/2 measurements along the whole length of coils, results of mech-
anical tests and the production technology for producing
-:'*&3 mm, strip wttih, micron tolerancos. The var~ious types of

installation used axe illustrated. It was fouff-t
easing the number of passes on 2-high rolling mills and correct
selection of lubricant the percentage of strip with thickness
tole-rance of + 0-005 mm can be increased 42~,,; the proportion
rises to 51% _Valth a foil mill. The proportion does not rise if
3- or 4-hie# mills are usedl but a mill with 12 rolls gives a
proportion of 68.5%, Better results are obtaimd by the drawing
method, the proportion then being 93%, 8(Y/b~lbeing 0-5 + 0.003 mm
thick. A simple design of drawing installations is ude-d, with a
productivity of 50 and 100 kg/hour for narrow Emd wide strip,
respectively. It was found that with the t~echr[ology adopted
thickness measurements on specimens cut from the front and back
ends of the strip were within + 0.003 mm of the, thialmess at any
part of the strip. Work descrThed has enabled the large scale
production of aluminium strip in long lengths aad to micron tol-
erances to be organised, this product being necessary for the
production of variable-capacity condensers.i The technology is
Card 2/2 also applicable to other metals and other thicknesses. There
are 3 figures 7 tables and 4 Slavic refeierices4

ABSTRACT: This article gives data on the ra. '~te oT reduction of
coal losses in mining operationslin Kuzgas, and.in
particular in the Prokoplyevsk-Kiselevsk district in
the period from 1948 to 1953. The large losses of coal
from poor mining practices are n6ted.. Basic causer, of
these losses are. 1) leaving of,~blocks of quality coal

located away from drifts where screening structures are used; 4)
coal losses in accidents with supporting structuies; 5) collapse
and flooding of operations; and 6) losses of sto'ed coal. Losses in

pockets and blocks and from collapse and flooding amoUnted to 95
percent of all losses from poor mining practicestor 1953. Technical,
organizational, and administrative measures are recommended for
improvement of mining operations.

ABSTRACT: The h'igh efficiency of longitudinalleapacitive compen-
sation as a means of voltage regulation of rural elec-
trical networks is noted in this paper. On' the basis of
analysis of longitudinal capacitive compensation and of
relationships in the lines, it is Aown that selection
of conductor size of compensated lines should be tade
according to the economical (current~denslty, since the
voltage losses can be sufficiently compensated for; the
application of longitudinal capacitive compensation
Card 1/2 raises the power factor and relieves the, energy source

Longitudinal Capacitive Compensation of Rural Electrical
Network (cont.)
from delivering reactive power. In radial distribution
networks longitudinal capacitive compensa, tion is best
located at the consumer's bus bar, since:In this case
large currents flow through the longitudiul capacitive
compensation only In the event a short cireuit occurs
at the consumer end; in addition, the voltage rises
only at the consumer'B bus bar Instead of in the entire
line. In networks vfith a distributed'load,, longitudinal
capacitive compensation should be located in such a
way that the line voltage does not exceed the rated.
Computations and experimental data are provided. It is
noted that introduction of a battery causes subharmonic
oscillations in certain cases.
