Equipment Manufacturing Plant), Milevsko are introduting
explosive forming for the manufacture of pressure vessels
(central cylindrical section for mounting on) railway wagons.
.Explosive forming proved successful particularly in forming
cylindrical shapes into aerodynamic ones and for,%ery hi.ih
accuracy forsting. Experiments were carried out on models one-
third of the natural size. Analysis of this method and of test
ishown that explosive forming has to be judged from a
number of points of view. The choice of the explosive lepends on
the transfer medium, the shape of the die and its dimersions, the
material to be formed and the technological facilities available.
A cylindrical sheet ring is placed in the die and tighlened
thoroughly w1th rubber or other packing material. The space
inside the ring is filled with water into which a suite.bly

arranged charge is placed which is then ignited by an electric
spark. The explosive,is transformed into gases of higb tempera-
ture and preasure which produce a shock-wave in the surrounding
medium, the front of which propagates at high speed and pushes
ahead of it the medium which originally surrounded the charge.
In the given case this medium was water, which is an ideal medium
_-for transmitting high pressures. Explosive forming is economical
for wry large components and components of difficult sbape. In
the case ofwry tough materials, the quality of forming: is det-
ermined by the explosive. The shape of the explosive determines
the characteristic of the process of propagation of the energy
and the presoure as a function of time. Intoduction of
explosive forming was proposed by the Assistant Technical Directa;
Josef Pola'~ek; the chief technologist, Jif(I Lauterbach and
technologiatip Robert VoWahlik and Bohumil Kulf9ek participated in
the work. There is I figure.

Investigated phenomenon. It is suggested, based on the interrelation between
cutting speed and tool wear., to consider the machinabIlIty as the ability of the
metal to wear out the tool under the given particular conditions, while the

that the most objective criterion of cutting properties of the tool Is Its
resistance to wear or the ratio of tool wear to volumetric unit of removed metal
or (for finishing machining) the ratio of tool,wear to unit of area of machined
surface. The author-presents a formula for the determination of volum,i of worn
awa.y tool material in mm3 per volume unit of removed metal in em3 per !,000 m of
tool travel. Citing examples it is shown that the suggested criteria ~,re con-
venient for the determination of the cutting properties of the tool de:.endi*n**g
on the cutting conditions for the comparison of the machinability of dIfferent
netals, and for the comparison of the cutting properties of tools made of the
same material. It is pointed out that the data on the specific wear may be
converted into the cutting speed magnitude at a given durability ard c:,uld be
made use of as correction factors for the dotermination of cutting coni.itions.
