TITLEz A Cherenkov Counter Using Total Internal Reflection PERIODICAL: Pribory i tekhnik7a eksperimenta, 1960, No. 5, ppo..llg - 121 TEXT; The counter is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The Cherenkov radiation produced by.a charged particle passinj; through the radiator strikes the front end at various ang.%es, depending on the velocity of the particle. For particles with a velocity 00 = (n n 2)-1/2 the angle of incidence is 2 equal to the angle of total internal reflection. The Cherenkov radiation due to particles with velocities greater than 0 experiences total internal reflection and is 0 1% 1 absorbed by the rear wall of the container which is coveved by black velvet. In the case of particles having a velof;ity smaller than ft , the radiation leaves the radiator and strikes two photomultipliers placed below the particle baam. TITLE: A differential gas Cherenkov counter PERIODICAL: Pribory i tekhnika eksperimenta, no.2, 1962. 119-52 TEXT: A detailed description is given of a differential gas Cherenkov counter developed in the high energy laboratory or OIYal in 1959 and used in the beam of the synchrophasotron for the detoction of K-inesons in pulses of-3-5 GeV- Cherenkov radiation from particles moving through the gas in the counter is focused by a spherical aluminium coated mirror onto a ci.:-cular diaphragm placed in front of a perspex plus through whic'a the light passes and is detected with a (5)y -'24 (FBu-21*) photo- multiplier. The plane of the photocalhode is perpendicular to the direction of the particle beam, which has a maximum diameter of 10 cm, and the axis of the photomultiplier is displaced about 12 cm from it. A more detailed discussion of the optical aberrationn is given. The radiation tube is about 1.5 m long 'and is li-n d with black velvet to reduce the background count; this Card V2 A differential ps Cherenkov counter S/12o/62/000/002/009/047 E039/E520 reduced the effective working length to 0.7 m. A photomultiplier with high quantum efficiency and large amplification is necessary and the electronic circuitry is sensitive to a pulse corresponding to one photoelectron from the cathode of the photo- multiplier. The variation of efficiency with air pressure was determined and it is shown that a background count appears at pressures greater than -_,25 atm. This background can be. reduced further, to to 2%, by using gases such as ethane and ethylene. Peak efficiency is at about 10 atm for air and K-mesons and '1Y -mesons can be separated in pulses up to 6 GeV/s. There are 4 figures. (Acts, physLca aLuica), v. 210 no* 4 1 748-764 -TOPIC TAGS:_ physics, particle counter, proton interaction, mnson inter- actioti~o scintillation detector ABSTRACT: The authors designed and built a multicounter systom using large scintillation tracking device In order to study the elatitic and nonelastic interactions between K+ and v+ mesons and protons at 2.5 to 5 Bev/c. K+ and x+ mesons were selected by a meson countar ti-Lescope consisting of 2 scintillation counters, a Ceren'kov counter, arid 2 gas Cerenkov speed selectors. K+ and w+ mesons Interacted with pi,otons In liquid hydrogen to produce secondary radiation. Phosphors uscid for scLqtLllatIon In the counters were produced by the Soviet Joitit nuclear research institute. The tracking device is capable of determining the coordinates (0 + AO. # + 44) of a particle in variou positiox~s. The authors also designed a dual slow coincideni,.e circuit for the multLcounter system. The optimum discriminating time o4 the dual slow coincidence circuit reached 25 n, 30 m Psec and the -ccording efficiency reached a& 98% after adjustment. Amplification coe!ficients of the amplifiers in the circuits were found to be at least a)ove 20. Dazid time for the 20-channel analyzer circuits were found to ';e 3bove 10 pscc. The multLcounter system was adjusted and inspected ;n a phase- stable synchrotron by the end of 1961 before It was used for iseasurins interactions between W+ mesons and protons. The systeta can a Leo be used for determining the cross section of w* mesone in the Ln,.(tractione. The system was employed for measuring differential cross sectLcons of elastic scattering of w+ mesons and protons at 3#2 Bev/c later in 1962. The following Improvements were made on the system after 1962t 1) con- centrittLon.of light at the counters was accomplished by total reflectioti instead of diffuse reflection; the distance between the systin and the accelerator was adjusted to 4 meters; 2) two Hoody dLscr1mLnstors were used in parallel Lnotead of one for a higher recording efficiency (1002) of the 20-channel dual coincidence circuit; and 3) an inspecting system cousListing of a discharge-type pulse light source was introduced to the system. TITLE: Gas-filled Threshold Cherenkov Counters for Accelerator Experiments PERIODICAI,: Pribory i tekhnika eksperimenta, 1961, No. 1, pp.. 32 - 35 TEXTs The velocity analysis of fant particles (p --- 1) by Cherenkov counters, using the dependence of the threshold or angle of Cherenkov emission on the velocityu is possible if the refractive index of the medium is close to unity. Viis condition is satisfied only by gaseous media, The present ,paper describes two gas-filled Cherenkov counters. one of them (supplied by Yu.A. Troyan, L.S. Okhrimenko and S.V. Mukhin) was an experimental counter which was used in s-tu d i e s designed to establish whether it is possibli to soparate out rare particles against a background of other particles. The second counter was designed for work in the Card 1/7 2o617 S/l2o/61/oOo/oul/Oo8/o62 Gas-filled Threshold .... E032/E314 and K-meson beams of the synehrophasotron of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The first of the above counters is shown in Fig. 1, in which 1 -is the steel body, 2 - is a glass tube 30 mm in diameter and covered with a film of aluminium on the inner surface, 3 - is a hollow light pipe, 4 - is a perspex window and 5 -is all (FEU-33) photomultiplier. Fig. 2 shows the second of' the above counters, in which I is the steel body, 2 is a polished dural tube,~80 mm in diameter and coated with an organic film and then an aluminium film on the inner surface, 4 is a quartz window and 5 is an FEU-33 photomultiplier. Vie first counter (Cl) was used in the -,r+ meson beam of t.he synchrocyclotron of the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research. The*energy was 300 MeV. The second c6unter (C2 ) was used iVL the beam of positive particles of the synchrophasotron of the above institute (largely `,~---mesons and protons) the j~iomentum being - 3 GeV/c. In both cases, the Cherenkov counter was Card 2/7 I 2o677 S/12o/6t/ooo/ool/c-c8/o62 Gas-filled Threshold .... E032/E314 connected in coincidence with a scintillation monitor telpscope whDSe counters had a diameter slightly smaller than the ciameter of the Cherenkov counter, The Cherenkov counter was arranged as, s-hqLwn in Fig- 3- C in this figure represents the scirAillation counters, YP-la represent Implifiers, the rectangular block in the centre of the figure indicates the poisition of the Cherenkov counter and the three rectangular blocks on the righthand side of the figure are coincidence circuits with resolving times as indicated. In these exp~iri- ments the ratio m = N21N 3 was measured. Fig. 4 shows the ratio m as a function of pressure in atmospheres for th) C1 colinter (filled with air). Curve a refers to a kinetic enargy Err+ 297 MeV and Curve b to 280 MeV a b k a= b k p p P. indicate the threshold pressures of the 1A )I I 'Y9 P-~ a and b curves for )x = and rr-wesons, respectively. Curve b was taken with a telescope containing a Cherenkov counter which was more sensitive to ji-mesons than 7-mesons. It is clear from Figs. 4 and 5 that it is Possible to separate out -4-mesons in a beam of -jT'-mesons, Fig. 6 shows the dependence of m on the pressure for the C2 counter filled with air,, This curve was obtained for a beam containing 40% --'mesona and 60% protons, p. and Show the threshold presBures for p- and -W-mesons, It Is concluded that particle separation is possible with thes,~, counters. This study was complex due to th:! fact that soil, unlike uniform media, contains gas, liquid, and coil components, and its particles are subject to the forces of internal friction and cohesion. There has been a great. difference observed in the behavior of soils with different% density and moisture content to the impact charge. Thus, the compression of water-free soil prAzaarily de-for*= its s1kelcton, i.e., by breakinG up stable bonds and displacing its particles. In water-satu.-atted soils, the water acts as a primai7 counlo2rforce. In addition to these characteristics, the distance and depth of soil soaples were kept in mind during the consTruct.-*Lon of dynamic diagrams using logging data. Abstract 23 cases are reported of treatment of persons aged 4-20 years and over who had been bitten by vipers and copperheada. TTeatnent Included excision of the site of tho bite., of a circular novocain block (0-5% solution) of the extremity above edema, of a perirenal block on the side of the infdctLon, of penicillin therapy, and the adninistrntion of cardiac agents. During sharply expressed edema and serious general condition, incisures of the skin and of the subcutaneous celluIxtr tissue were conducted. In 6-20 days, the patients were dis- missed from the clinic. Card 1/1 23 V K) /9. 11 -~ USSR/Gencral Problens nf Pathology - PathoPhYsiology Of Via U.
