has published large Issued of many other textbooks which were not available to students
last year. The academy librar7 has 700,000 books, and a huge aircraft engine labratory
was recently completed. The academic plan at the academy has been improved this year
as a result of a study conducted over several years which showed that the students
vere overburdened In the post with secondelrY study assignments and therefore had no
time for independent work. Now, the number of required academic subjects has been
reduced significantly, and tbare has been an increase in the numbe2- of hours of inde-
pendent work. The senior couraes have abandoned the old-style class in which the
student's work was reduced to a more mechanical performance, and All be replaced by
Individual course-wide work (calculation, graphap and experiments). The author
ste.ed that although much is being done to educate well-trained, hIgh17 (Vjall-

TEXT-, In 1959 tile Zaporozliskly zavod abrazivnykh Izdelly (ZZAI) (Zappro-
zh1ve Plant of Abrasive Articles) introduced on an industrial scale the melting
of electrocorundum from a bauxite agglomerate, prior to which the Plant together
with the VNIIASh had carried out industrial tests with the agglomerate made from
Hunqarian bauxite. The agglomerate represents a sintered porous mass without
any hydrate water or moisture. In comparison with green bauxite, the sintered
bauxite possesses the following advantages: no melt ejections from the furnace,
a reduction of the specific electric power consumption by 12.5% and of the bauxite
consumption by 5%, a considerable decrease in dustiness of the plant shop and,
consequently, improved working conditions. Based on the test results, an
agglomeration shop was equipped at the Plant in December 1959, yielding 156,000
tons of bauxite agglomerate per year. The bauxite is crushed to a granularity

of 15-0 mm, the AK anthracite, used as fuel, to a grain size of 3-0 mm. 7-8%
of anthracite is added to the crushed bauxite and both materials are mixed and
moistened. Then the charge is sintered in the~3TM (UZTM) agglomeration machine
having an absorption area of 50 m2. The following technological parameters are
established for the sintering process: height of charge layer on the agglomera-
tion belt = 220 mm, average vacuum before the exhauster = 750 mm water column,
igniting temperature - 1,220-1,2500C, specific capacity of the agglomeration
machine = 0.41 ton/m2.hour, travel speed of the agglomeration belt = 1.5-2.0
m/min. After the sintering and cooling, the bauxite agglomerate is crushed to
~ granularity of 150-20 mm and is conveyed to the foundry. The authors present
~ table of the composition of the bauxite agglomerate, state the basic parameters
of the melting process, and point out that the specific electric power consump-
tion could be reduced by 14% since sintered bauxite instead of green one has
been used., which resulted In saving 22,376,000 kwh in 1959. The per-hour-output
of the furnaces grows by 15%. The authors report that this new and important
process has also been adopted by the abrasive-manufacturing plants at Leningrad,
Chelyabinsk and Tashkent. There is 1 graph and I table.

TITLE: Effect of vanadium on the phase composition and structure of high-boron steel
SOURCE: Atomnaya energiya, v. 20, no. ", 1.966, 1101-1)15
TOPIC TAGS: boron steel, high boron steel, steel machinability, machinability

ABSTRACT: The effect of vanadium on the structure and machinability of high-boron
steels has been studied. These steels have a low plasticity and machinability caused
by a high content of boron phase of the M2B type. The amount of this phase can be re
duced by promoting formation of borides'containing more boron per unit volume than
M2B. Nine heats containing up to 0.02% carbon, 0.47-20-14% chromium, 0-17-83% nickel,
2.88-3.46% '~oron-4/jand 0-1-1.2% V were tested. It was found that in the presence of
vanadium, in addition to M2B boride, a tetrogonal M3B. boride is formed whose quanti~
increases with Increasing vanadium content. At I1% vanadium, the whole boride
phase consists of M B and the volume of the boride phase decreases by approximately
10%. The steel coniaining 3-3.5% boron and 7-11% vanadium can be easily machined
with standard cutting cools. Orig. art. has: 2 figures and 1 table.

ABSTRACT: Since a majority of azo-dyes are prepared on a benzidine base
and the latter are highly cancerogenic, efforts are being made
to replace this base in dyestuff manufacturing plants by other
eemi-products. A method was developed for the separation of
4,41-diaminodiphenylurea from iron residue by flotation with
butanol. The separation of the urea was also carried out by extrac-
tion with hot water, weak hydrochloric acid and by means of organic
flotation reagents but the best results were obtained through
flotation with butanol. The product obtained by this method con-
tained 92% amine (total yield 98.2%) and the diamine concentration
in the butanol layer was only 0.1%. The possibility of obtaining
azo-dyes by diazotization and combining 4,41-diaminodiphenylurea
with different semi-products - 1,8-aminonaphthol-3,6-disulfonic
acid (Ash-acid), m-phenylenediamine, 2,8-aminonaphthol-6-sulfacid
(gamma-acid), phenol, 2,5-aminonaphthol-7-sulfacid (I-acid),
p-nitroaniline, salicylio and sulfanilic acid - is explained. A

and was found to be of the same quality as the brown benzidine-
base dye. 7he latter product was obtained by combining (azo-
combinationJ.4,41-diaminodiphenylurea with 2,8-aminonaphthol-6-

found to be even better than that of the product obtained by azo-
combining benzidine with the gamma-acid and salicylic acid.

TITLE: Demolition of the sluice gate of the Bajina Basta hydroelectric power
plant
SOURCE: Vojnotehnicki glasnik, no. 8-9, 1966, 614-633
TOPIC TAGS: demolition. structure vibration, seismic wave
ABSTRACT: The selection of parameters, methods, and processes involved in
successful demolition of the sluice gate of the Bajina Basta hydroelectric power
plant are discussed. This demolition has yielded manyuseful data required for
further studies into the problems of building and structure demolition. Measuring
the intensity of seismic waves Vnditions made possible a more detailed investiga-
tion of the effects of explosion-on various structures under various circumstances.
Useful information was also obtained on the volume of explosives that can be set off
1/2
NR: AP6032995
without damaging neighboring structures. It was found that the intensity of seismic
waves generally depends on two factors: 1) type and amount of explosives; and
2) type of material, size, and position of the structure to be demolished, and
3) type, size and position of the neighboring structures exposed to possible damage,
It is recommended that a trial demolition precede the main one. Through such a
trial demonstration, in addition to data obtained from seismic measurements, othe
demolition parameters, such as the optimum amount of explosive to be employed,
can be determined. Orig. art. has: 8 figures.

"Indications for the Application of Occlusion in the PrevGntion of
Amblyopia."
Belgrade, I-Tedicinski Glasnik, 1101 17, No 5, May 1963, pp 205-208.
Abstract: ZA-uthor's Serbocroatian summary modifiej The author
states that occlusion applied properly and in good time is the
simplest, most effective, and cheapest method of preventing &mbly-
opia in that other treatments are only now under development and
last long, cost much, and are not fully effective while being
impractical for school children. Improper occlusion, however, can
worsen the situation in the sense of the normalization of the fixa-
tion. Brief seminars with children's and school physicians ard
called for, as well as popular lectures to parents on the need for
early discovery of the problem.
