ABSTRAM The article deals with the uses of silicon in leather pro-
cessing, For the tests a 15;0' solution of polysiloxane in
perchloro ethylene was used. The leather could be treated:
1) by immersion in the silicon solution, 2) by coating with
a plush pad on the grain side or both sides, 3) bpraying
with silicon solution. The results of tests made with these
various methods on sole, cow and calf box, calf velour,

wrinkling temperature of the leather, 3) effect of fat con-
tent on absorption of water by a hide after silicon treat-
ment, 4) effect of silicon treatment on the wearing proper-
ties of leather, 5) silicon consumption in the treatment
of leather, 6) care of footwear. The results of these tests
are given, partly in tabular form. The production costs of
silicon treatment are dealt witht the diPPinR mothod is ex-
pensive but the cost could be reduced by carrYing out the
treatment in an apparatus fitted with rollers which would
squeeze out the surplus s1licon from the leather. The
spraying and coating methods are cheaper and should be used
where possible. There are 14 tables.
