Control for Machine Tools (Nekotoryye voprosy proyektirov-

PERIODICAL: Stanki i Instrument, 19--18, 14o.41 pp. 9 - 13 (USSR).
ABSTRACT: Digital programie control systems belon_rz to one of three
groups: 1) Perform-fnc setting-up rotions of the working
organsi 2) Controlliri,r,, motions of the workini-, organs by which
the component shape is generated; -3) ControllinC all machine
motions in response to results computed from detecting element
signals. In considerin- the first Croup, applicable in drilling,
jig boring, horizontal borinC and punchinE, the problem is to
ensure the required accuracy toZethcr with the maximum rapidity
of motions, both for setting-up and cuttinf,. A typical control
cycle is considered and a simple anol,7sia is applied to deter-
mine optimum velocities and the required resolution of the
di6ital control step. The second 1E-ro-up Is stated to be at the
beginnin6 of its technical development with many unsolved
problems. A general discussion is devoted to the topiea of:
a) neduction-of the reruired volume of information.' In the
general case, mathematical theory can be used to evaluate the
volume of information recuired in relation to the permitted error

In practice, the prevalence of stiaight lines and circles
greatly simplifies the problem; b) appropriate dimensioning
of drawings. Dimensioning convcnicnt for ditrital control is
iliustrated by an c) Ue substitution of special
programme control devices and kejboa-rd machines for general
electronic computinr, machines. FiE. ? sho,,-,,s the confic.,uration

information into impulac form uriir,~ linear interpola tion. The
machine transfers the inforrnation from a perforated paper
strip into a five-way mai~i.etic iiiipulse tape; d) the devel-
opment of control devices directly as5ociated with the machine
tool in order to formulate the digital infor:3ation by a kind
of copying procedure, The thizd Lzroup of proCram.,_c control
