L a p s h I n a V. F. N. G. ChernyshevskIJ State Un1V.-,--S5r5T6_v- PROBL.
ENDOKR. 1956, 2/4 (76-81) Tables 2
Experiments were carried out on adult male rats (starting weight 282-285 g.). on
young male rats (starting weight 110 g.), on 7-day-old chicks of the 'white leghorn
race. and on female mice weighing 18.4-21.3 g. The Na salt of PAS was dissolved
In water and introduced 2-3 times daily for 10-20 days Into the stomach of rats by
means of a tube, In amounts of 60 and 180 mg. per 100 g. body weight. At the end
of the experiment, the experimental and control animals were killed, andthethyroid
glands were weighed and examined microscopically. One group of animals reteived
PAS only, a second group PAS and potassium iodide (0.5 rng. per rat), and a third
group PAS and thyroid extract (10 mg. per 100 g. body weight). The results agreed
in experiments on rats and chicks. In animals receiving PAS an enlargement
(1 5-2-3 times that of the control gland, depending on the dose and duration of ad-
ministration of the drug) of the thyroid gland was noted, as well as hyperaemia,
hypertrophy, Increase In height of the follicular epithelium, decrease of lumen of
the follicles, with frequent absence of colloid. Reactivity of thyroid glands in mice
was found to be very low toward the action of PAS. Simultaneous; addition of no-
tassiurn iodide decreased by two thirds the goltrogenic effect of PAS, but simul-
taneous administration of thyroid extract removed it completely.

Title The Significance of the Nervous System and Its Higher
Center in the Thyrotropic Hormone Reaction.
Orij; Pub Probl. endikronol. I gormonoterapii, 1955, 1, No 2, 15-20
Abstract By the methods of conditioned reflex, phermacology and
surgery,it was shown that the thyrotropic hormone (TH)
acts on the thyroid gland not only directly but also
through the nervous system. By conditioned reflex TH
action was produced: by the influence of conditioned
irritants (injections of physiol. solution, painting of
the mouth surface with 0.2% solution of quinine, set-up
for the test) in marmots and mice there is a delay in
normalization of the thyroid structure, previously chan-
ged by introduction of sodiuniextract of anterior pitui-
tary, and also an Increase in metamorphogenic activity

of the thyroid gland. The increased irritability of the
CNS induced by aciffeine leads to the weakening and depres-
sing of the thyrotropic reaction, a fact which indicates
cortical regulation of the structure and function of the
thyroid. Thyrotropic effect develops also in absence of
higher centers of the CNS.: the removal of one or both
cerebral hemispheres in 5-8 day old chicks does not inhi-
bit the development of thyrotropic reaction on -the intro-
duction of the pituitary preparation. The strength of
reaction, determined by the increase in weidit of thyroid,
appears to be largest on the complete.removal of the he-
mispheres and the introduction of the pituitary prepara-
tion from the Uth to 16th day after the operation.
The large hemispheres do not appear to be indispensible
for the occurence of the TH influence, but they do regu-
late and control the action of TH.
