TITLE: The Crimean Beech In Spring and Autumn (Krymskiy buk vennoy i
osenlyu)
PERIODICAL: Priroda, 1957, No 10, p 125 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The author describes the influence different altitudes exert
upon the growth and development of the Crimean beach (Fagus
taurica). This kind of tree grown in altitudes of from 400
to ltOOO m. Usually in April, beeches growing in the 400 m
region show their first green leaves. With the developing
spring the green belt of trees climbs higher and reaches the
1,000 m zone in about 3 weeks. In autumn the reverse develop-
ment can be observed. The leaves of the beeches in the high-
est zone turn yellow first and then the trees growing on a
lower level follow. This is due to unfavourable climatic
conditions in the higher regions which influence# too, the
growth of the trees and the development of their trunks.

PERIODICALs Radio, 1957, Nr 2, pp 51-52 (USSR)
ABSTRAM A General descriptinn of American methods of magnotic picture
recording is presented in the article. In an RCA system, the 4-mc band
is divided into a number of subbands and recorded by a multichannel magnetic
head on a wide magnetic tape. The tape speed is 5 61sec. Iloweverg very
complicated equipment is necessary. In an "Ampex" system, the signals are
recorded across the tape by means of a number of magnetic heads carried on
a rotating drum. The tape speed is 380 mm/soc. Other details of the Ampex
system are given in the article. It is claimed that I.S. Rabinovich had
invented the principle of rotuting magnetic-head recording in USSR as cirly
as 1945. Ile used a 36-mm magnetic tape traveling at 10 MM/sec.
(Abstractor's note: what he did record is not stated.)

TITLEs Stereophonio Sound in Wide- Angle-Screen Movies (Stereozvuk v
shirokoekrannykh kinofillmakh)
FERIODICALt Radiop 1958, Nr 5, pp 22 25 (UJSR)
ABSTRACTs The purpose of this article is to explain the particularities
and technology of atersophonio sound recording for wide-
angle screen movien. The stereophonic equipment IIKM3Z-311
for initial sound recording, which was designed by "Moofillm"
and the Experimentallnyy zavod glavnogo upravleniya radio-
informatsii (Experimental Plant of the Main Administration for
Radio Information), is described briefly. Figure 4 is a block
diagram of the initial sound recording arrangement. Figure 5
shows a block diagram of the stereophonic synchronization
with the motion picture. The "KMSZ-311 has been used with the
movies "Schastlivaya yunost"', "Prolog" and others. The
electronics laboratory of NIKFI designed a special television
control apparatus - consisting of aTV camera mounted on top
of the motion picture camera and a TV set installed at the
microphone control desk - which was used in the motion picture
Card 1/2 "Prolog" and simplified the synchronization. The "KMSZ-3"
Stereophonic Sound in aide-Angle-3creen Movies 107-5.5-5-13/32
equipment consists of a mixer panel for stereophonic recording
with a separate feed unit, a four-channel synchronous tape
recorder "MEZ-1811, three control loudspeakers and a volume
control device for three channels. The "MEZ-1811 tape recorder
was developed on the basis of the "MEZ-1311 tape recorder.
A 35 mm perforated tape is used. The so-called electrical
printing system lelektricheakaya pechat') is used for trans-
ferring the sound recording from the four-track tape to the
final motion picture copy. It consistn of one section for
reproducing the initial recording and a recording section
which adds the magnetic sound track to the film. Both sections
work synchronously. Figure 8 shows the block diagram of the
electrical printing system. Thare are 10 figures.
