Abstract: [Authors' Fnglish summary modified] Authors report
on a.statistical study of the use of forceps in deliveries at
the hospital xrith which they are affiliated. Indications for
the use of forceps were threatened asphyxia of foetus (61.3
per cent of cases) and no progress in 2nd period of labor
(31.7 per cent). The procedure was applied in 3.9 per cent
of all cases, of which 80.9 per cent were primiparae and 19.1
multiparae. Xo complications were observed during 3rd period
of labor, and, puerperlum. 'Ihe -cut peritoneum healed per pri-

TITLE: Use of milk whey in chick embryo tissue culture of Aujeszky virus
SOURCE: Medycyna weterynaryjna, no. 9,, 1965, 544-546
TOPIC TAGS: virus, tissue physiology-t biologic reproduction
ABSTRACT: Investigations were carried out on the possibility of replacing the
relatively expensive Parker's fluid in the =dium, used for the culture cells of
checken embryo, by milk whey. It was found that in a medium composed of: 60%
growth fluid (i.e. Hank?s fluid, 0,0,r.% hydrolysate of lactalbunin, 2% inactivated
calf serum and penicillin - 100 i. u./i ml and streptomycin - 0,1 mg/l ml)# 40%
whey, and 2% cattle amniotic fluid thel trypsinated cells of chicken enibryo remained
alive for six days without visible morphological changes. Investigations on the
height of the titre of Aujeskylb vints, passaged three times through the above-
mentioned medium, showed no fall in the titre as compared with the titre of the
virus passaged through the control mcdium. The medium with the whey may be used
not only to carry out the seroneutral-isation reaction, but also to grow Aujeskyls
virus and perform a titre. The cost of preparation of the above-qwntioned medium
is.several times.lower than the cost of the medium with Parker's fluid. (Based on

'Abstract.[English summary modified]: None of 4 strains of the Aujeszky
-vi-r-usproduced interferon in tissue. cultures of calf or pig kidney, or
of chicken fibroblast; but sl.ight production of interferon was found in

perfringens and septicum strains w,-,re highly virulent and caused the death of
guinea pigs in 12-36 hr. Cl. sporogenes proved to be nonvirulent. The Willis and

study of the lecithinase effect, presence of lipase, and fermentation of lactose. It
allowed distinction of the Cl. perfringens, ocdomations, sporogenes, and botulinum
strains. The Kalinin medium was bost for showing blackening (3-4 hr) at the same

ty-pe.C, Cl. septicura and Cl. oedomatiena on a culture of chicken embryo
cells. It was found that all the strains investigated produced definite
specific cytopathic changeti after only four hours. Toxin determination
sensitivity by the title mothod vias compared with the lecithovitelline
reaction on white mice. Thc! forwLer method was found more sensitive in
investigating anaerobic bacteria. The method is claimed to be cheap, rapid,
reproducible and giving uniform results..

TEXT: The importance of phonochemistry is pointed out as a new
branch of chemistry. Probleme are enumerated which are concerned
with phonochemistry. It is ccnj'irmed that alsmost all chemical
processes are dependent on cavitation. Depending on the type of
aqueous solution, the intensity of the ultrasound, the reaction
time B (V) of the ultrasound and the type of dissolved gas can pro-
duce unstable ions H 20- or s1rongly excited H20 particles and free
radicals with oxidizing properties, capable of restoring H ra-
dicals. For oxidation in an u-ltrasonic field it is necessary for

solved 0 depends as much on the spontaneous activation of 0 as on
the ac-%',-ion of molecular 0 of the secondary reactions with 11 and OH
radicals. The excitation process of H 0 particles and their dis-
sociation velocity are controlled by ~he presence of gases in the
vibrating cavitation bubbles. Reaction velocity of gases depends
probably on the oscillation of the OH radicals. Discharged gases
i-tith a small ionizing potential increase the sound luminesoence
and cause oxidation. Chemical reactions always-develop on -the ap-
pearance of luminescence and cavitational ionization. The discharge
of J is described from an aqL;.eous solution of KJ which took place
by oxidation in H202. Addition of CCl 4 increases the output of J
on account of the, oxidation of KJ by free 01 produced by the dis-
solution of CCl 4* Due to its polarity CC1 4 aids ultrasonic cavi-
tation with the formation of H and OH. The opinion is expressed
that the discharge of J from KJ and also the dissolution of CU 4
under the action of ultrasound cause a resonant oscillation of air

bubbles in a standing wave. The chemical action of ultrasound pro-
ceeds only when the height of the exposed liquid is greater than
the wavelength. 11hen the duration of ultrasonic action increasest
the output of J increases lir.early. For a constant intensity of
ultrasound the amount of J formed depends on the frequency. The
largest amount of J is formk. at a frequency of 300 kc/s. The addi-
tion of alcohol, even in small quantities, when ultrasound acts an
Ki in the presence of CCl riakes oxidation more difficult. Dist-

illed H20 which.has been souiided possesses great oxidizing ability
in relation to KJ. In this case the amount of J formed increases
with the amount of sounded R, 0 but does not depend on the concen-
tration of the XJ solution. Oxidation in the given case develops
as a consequence of the formation of H 0 The results are com-

ism of XJ is explained. A description is given of the ultrasonic
oxidation of an aqueous solution of KBr in the presence of Ar and
0 with formation of Br and H 202' Graphs are analyzed of tile out-
puts of H20 2 and Br as a function of the concentration of the so-
lution. The ultrasonic oxidation of an aqueous solution of KBr al-
so in the presence of N is studied. The amount of formed Br, H202
and HNO and HNO acids does not depend in the given case on the
2 3
concentration of the solution. By means of a reaction, the mecha_
nism of oxidation of KBr is illustrated.. The oxidation of an aque-'
ous solution of KC1 in an ultrasonic field is examined,in the pre-
sence of Ar and 0 with forme.tion of 01 and H 202' The graphs are
analyzed of the outputs of if 0, and Cl as a function of solution

concentration. The nature of -the ultrasonic oxidation of KC1 is
clarified by an example of ~a reaction. The output of C1 is small;
in the presence of Ar it is bigger than in the presence of 0. The

formation of H 0 and the outpu.t of C1 decrease for a M concentra-

tion greater than 11-1. The ultrasonic oxidation reaction of S02 is
worked out in the presence of Y and 0. In the presence of N in
equal amounts with-H20 2' intermediate HN02 and HN03 and also H2SO,
are formed. The outputs of 11 0, and HNO are given in graphs as

functions of the external preseure of the air saturated water of
the test. At very high and low pressures the action of ultrasound is
not observed. The addition of alcohol (nie+hyl, ethyl or popyl.) de-
creases the outputs of HN02 and 1-UTO 3' It is noticed that for the
oxidation of N, there is -~i critical intenaity of ultracounA. At in-
tensities greater than the critical, the amouAt of IIN02 and HNO 3
increases linearly with the duration of action of ultrasound. Small
remarks are made on the oxidation of ascorbic acid solutions in wa-

and phenol disappear on the action of ultrasound when the absorp-
tion is generally equal. It is shown'that ultrasonic action of pro-

sequence of the oxidizing action of free radicals. The author's

The engine (Figs. 1, 2 and 3) has the following common elements:
A combustion chamber 1, exhaust nozzle 5, and injectors 2, 3 and 4,
which are in operation when the engine works both as a rocket and
as a ram jet. The injectors are fixed in the plate 8 in housing 15
which is attached to the casing by means of tubes 13, through which
the fuel is supplied. When the engine works as a rocket, the sli-
der 6 is in the forward position, blocking the intake of the en-
gine and closing the combustion chamber from the, front. At a re-
quired speed the pressure acting on the front of the slider forces
it back against the damper 10 which is regulated to a suitable
pressure. When the slider occupit-as the position shown by the dotted
line in Fig. 1, the intake and the annular channel 14 of the diffu-
