TITLE: Nitrogen-glycosides. VIII. !Glucosyl derivatives of
rhodanine
PERIODICAL: Magyar kemiai folyoirat, no. 9, 1961, 406-410
TEXT: The article, -~the eighth of a series, deals with the preparation
and structure of crystalline tetraacety-l-glucosyl derivatives from
rhodanine derivatives containing an exocyclic double bond in position 5,
in aqueous acetone with acetobromglucose in the presence of sodium hy-
droxide. The compounds prepared by.the above method were N-(tetraacetyl-
D-glucosyl)-5-isopropylidene-rhodanine (I), N-(tetraacetyl-D-glucosyl)-
6-benzylidene-rhodanine (II), N-(tetraacetyl-D-glucosyo-5-anisylidene-
rhodanine (111) and N- ( te traa ce tyl -D-glu co syo -2-pbenyl ami no-6-benzyl i den e-
thiazolin-4-one (TV). The transformation of these derivatives into free
rhodanine-glycosides is difficult because of the sensitiveness of
rhodanine ring to alkaliess the Zemple'n method, which provides for

saponification with sodium methylate, does not give the required results.
The following exr.,eriments and degradation products proved the structure
of (1), (11) and (III). The intact thione group has been ascertained
in the tetraacetyl-glucosyl derivatives: the N-alkyl rhodanines did not
react with aeetobromglucose; A -phenyl-o~-iole-acrylic acid was formed
from (II) by alkaline de'gradation -w-ith 101o potassium hydroxide. The
proof that these compounds are'N-glucosyl derivatives lies in the fact
that by methanolysis of (II) and (III) with sodium methylate in absolute
methanol, followed by acetylation of the amorphous product, N-(tetruacetyl-
D--glucosyl)-methyl-carbamate has been obtained. The reaction of rhodanine
and acetobromglucose in aqueous acetone in the presence of sodium hydrox-
ide gave only (I), and glucosyl derivative of the unsubstituted rhodanine
could be obtained in this way. The structure of (IV) has not yet been
proved. Characteristic data of the ultraviolet spectra of the tetra-
acetyl-glycosides and the corresponding free aglycones are as followsx

of -rawth. On further transplantations the elementary
bodies transform into diphtheroids 0-5-1-5,AA- in size.
On aGar the latter form colonies resembling streptococei
colonies and in broth they produce turl#dity and a residue.
The reverse transforLmtion of diphtheroids into the Cpni-
dial forms could not be observed. The gonidial bacteria
aescribed are sensitive to penicillin, are very stable on
storage, and retain their viability on dehydration or in
broth for two years.

rocTz-o-nezapalentapluc. Congenital pneumonia PEDIAT.POL.11)56,
31/10 (1109-1116) Tables 7 Illus. 8
I During the period 1951-1954, histopathological examination of the lungs was done
in 291 foctuses-and neonates. In the present communication, special attention is
given to neonates who had lived no longer than 48 hours, since a case of pneumonia
diagnosed within that period can be regarded, in the majority of the cases, as con-
genital. The findings in the other foetuses and neonates served only for control pur-
poses. Among 97 neonates who died within 48 hr. after birth, and who were eX4Lm -
ined microscopically, there were 33 with acute pneumonia; among neonates who
lived for up to 4 days there were 56 such cases (410,1.). Among the neonates deceas-
ed within 2 days, there were 27 with catarrhal pneumonia, 1 with desquamative
pneumonia, 1 with fibrinous pneumonia and 4 with acute interstitial pneumonia. It
is supposed that acute interstitial pneumonia is not an autonomous form, but repre-
sents the stage of onset of other forms of pneumonia. Pneumonia was not more fre-
quent among prematures than among infants born at term. The findings obtained
lead to the conclusion that as'piration plays an important part in the causation of
pneumonia during the first days of life. No causal relationship could be demonistra-
ted between cerebromeningeal haemorrhages and pneumonia in neonates deceased
during the first 2 days of life. It is only rarely that, at autopsy, a correct diagno-
sis of pneumonia is made in neonates.' and It is therefore considered absolutely ne-
cessary to carry out microscopical study in every post-mortem examination of a
newborn child. Karlinska - Warsaw (V, 7)

Abstract The lungs of 291 fetuscs and neonates (out of these,

36 minutes to 4 days. The presence of EM was fre-
quently brought forth by aspiration of amniotic fluid
and hemorrheges in the lungs, which indicato the
significance of anoxia in the pathogenesis of HM. The
