There may be, however, some cases of hyperthyroidism with ar. elevated plasma cholesterol level. They differ from other cases of Graves-Basedow's disease by the preponderance of suprathyroideal symp- toms (cortico-subcortico-hypophyseal). This elevation is due to increase of free cholesterol; it decreases during the treatment. In 3 cases of hypothyroidism the tot -at plasma cholesterol was high, owing to an increase of its esterified fraction. The level of the same fraction fell during treatment. No significant changes were found in the RBC cholesterol, neither free nor esterified, both as well in hyperthyroidism as in hypothyroidism. It was found to be more stable than the plasma cholesterol. The BMR is more concordant with the clinical state of the patient than cholesterolaen-Lia. The PG-5 records depths to 5 m with an average error of 3% and horizontal distances to 500 m with an average error of h%. The profile re- cording scale is 1:200 for the horizontal and 1:100 for the perpendicular. The PG-15 hydrostatic profilograph records depths of 15 m with an average error of 3% and hori- zontal distances to 1000 m with an average error of 4%. The profile recording scale for this instrument is 1:500 in the horizontal and 1:100 in the perpendicular. Re- search conducted in the SSSR shows that the PG-5 and PG-15 instruments have the fol- lowing advantages: rapid measurement recording, accurate profile registration, profi: plotting in a definite scale without the necessity for further data processing and hil sensitivity in depth measurements. The disadvantages of the PG-5 instrument are: it L 41266-66 ACC NR, APbO18210 cannot be used in rivers with a muddy bottom or rapid water currents, and -the operatio4 of the mechanism for measuring horizontal distances is not sufficiently steady. The PG-15 instrument is considerably more stable in measuring horizontal distances. A brief description is also given of a range-finding profilograph with a depth registra~i tion of 15 m and a horizontal distance registration of UP to 5000 m. The depth mea- surement accuracy of this instrument is 3-5% while the accuracy for horizontal measure ments is 3-6%. This instruemnt may be used to cover 10-12 km/hr in streem flowing at~ a rate of up to 1.5 m/sec. While the hydrostatic instruments give a profile recording with a more exact distance scale than the echo probe method, the selection of th ticular type of instrument depends on the hydrological and operational conditions pre- vailing at the location and time of the measurements. ABSTRACT: In order to augment the sensitivity of a receiver as well as to in crease the range-of a radar set,, converters with the lg*W_'t possible internal - noises and appropriately high amplification are used in'the receiver input. One of these converters possessing very good noise properties is the semiconductor 17ard 113 ..j dC A ACUSSION NR: AT4023925 J,dioda parametric aMlifier. In the event a paiametric amplifier U -.used in a radar operating in an echo suppressor systems this amplifier ahould have not only the appropriate sensitivitys amplification and band widths but in addition -the-difference of phase shift raised for the received signal in the repetitive cycle should not exceed a specific value. Findings showed that every parametric 'J'system which is suitable for amplification of coherent signals can be used as the input stage of a radar receiver operating in an echo suppressor system. s depending upon the type of system used., the degree3 of complication of However ithe design solution and requirements as to the pumping generator stability will fbe different. It can be stated in general that solutions with four-frequency- parametric up-converters do not require as high a pumping generator frequency stability as the systems with an amplifier.., since changes in the piunping genera- 1 -tor frequency can be compensated in a specific range owing to the use of suite- ent. ble mixers. The requirements for the pumping power stability are also differ They are the leaut stringent in the case of a summation mixers whose amplifica- tion resultB onlywith an upward frequency change and where the input and out- i put resistances are supplementary'. A four-frequency up-converters should occupr 'ond place because it is more sensitive to changes in the pwnping puwr than jCard 2/3 ACCMION NR: AT4023925 the summing mixer. The most sensitive is the amplifier containing a circulators, it is also the most simple amplifier system,, desi -wiso, Ever one of those gn y devices has its own advantages and disadvantages. The use of any one of them is contingent upon the teohnical requirements. "In conclusion.. author wishes to thank Prof. Doctor.J_,_LenkQxAi.for a number of valuable hints dealing with. An L a parametric head, and a pump generator with power supply., is described. The amplifier design, measuring circuits and the results of laboratory measurements are given in the original article. The circulator-is built with a strip line with N-type concentric terminals.. The input coefficient of the btanding wave of the circulator in less than 1.2. The losses are not greater than 0.5 db. The bandwidth of the 20-db amplifier is 8 maps. The resulting.noise coefficient of the receiver with 20-db parametric amplification at the Input is about 2.5 db with a noise coefficient of 13 db for the rest of the receiver. The para- metric amplifier described was installed in "Aviall-type surveillance radar located at the Warsaw Airport. The amplifier was placed between the TR resonator and the crystal mixer, requiring,no further construe- tion changes. To achieve stable operation, it was necessary to use a four-arm circulator which was made by connecting two three-arm circula_.. tors. The use of the parametric amplifier made it possible to increase the potential of the radar up to 10 db and the radar range to about 75%. It was-experimentally confirrhed that the use of,the parametric amplifier as an input stage for the receiver did not cause any decrease in the 4uality of the stationary-target selection system being used in the "Avia" type radar.
