Abstract -The applicability.of,tho, mdthod of pressed powders to various
inorgahicand organic solid-bodies is considered. From the
infrared spectra of many specimens., pressed in a vacuum ap-
paratus constructed by the-authors,, the foUowing is shown:
1. Samples of barium titanate,, which exhibits stirong farro-
~lectrie properties prior to pulverization., and samples of
barium titanate obtained in powder form, have the Bame ab-
sorytion spectra with bands at 545 and approximately 420
cm . 2. Polystryrol., pressed with potassium bromide, has
essentially the same absorption spectrum in the infrared

TITLE: Use of resistance tensometers for the measurement of hydrostatic
pressure up to 10,000 atm
PERIODICAL: Pomiary, Automatyka, Kontrola, no. 4, ig6i, 124 - 126
TEXT: The article describes the usefulness, accuracy and the technique of
using and testing resistance tensometers under very high hydrostatic pressures.
Measurements made with the aid of grid tensometers produced by the Instytut Techni-
ki Budowlanej (Institute of Construction Engineering) in Warsaw showed that the
sensitivity deformhtion coefficient up to 10,000 atm pressure does not change more
than 1.5%. The resistance tensometers were glued with KM glue onto a number 6f
cylindrical samples, made of spectral pure polycrystal metals Al, Cu, Fe, Ni and
Mo. The samples were exposed to pressure in a high-pressure chamber thermally
stabilized with an accuracy of + 0.020C. Relative increase of resistance was
measured on-& cantilever measur7ing bar registering deformations with an accuracy
of 1.0 1 10 , or relative resistance changes with an accuracy of 2.1 - 10-6. In

order to ascertain the bahaviornof resistance tensometers glued to the base]p
resistance changes of a tensometer glued to &,constaut, containing the same
chemical compounds as the wire, were measured and resistance changes arising
due to pressure on free constant wire were also measured. After testing deforma-
tion of metal under high pressure with the aid of a single and a compensating
tensometer, the authors point out that the tensometers produced by the Institute
of Construction Engineering may be used for measurements under very high hydrostat-
ic pressure. The KTN I glue produced by the above institute shows good glueing
properties, and the presence of a mixture containing 50% of transformer oil with
kerosene, jacking moisture, doesi:not influence its properties. However, a longer
drying pe3~iod at higher temperature Is adv6sed. At the beginning the tensometer
creeps, and the creeping value Is 20 - 10 . With tensometers glued to cylindrical
samples in direction opposite to the generating direction a large deviation of
measured value will occur, which can be corrected by a differentiating formula.

Initial magnetization of nickel under tension and high
hydrostatic pressure /
PERIODICAL: Acts, Physics, Polonica, v. 20, no- 5 - 61 1961, 391 - 402
TEXT: Steinberger (Ref. 7) has drawn attention to the fact that the
magnetostriction characteristics of nickel depend on the outer pressure.
The authors wanted to find out-to what extent this effect is due to the
pressure dependence of the magnetostriction or to the pressure dependence
of the energy of magnetic anisotropy and other quantities. This question
remained, however, unanswered. The influences of magnetostrictiomj
tension and crystal anisotropy on domain-magnetization are considered
at first and put in relation to susceptibility. It is tried to account
theoretically for the experimental results obtained by Brockhouse (Ref. 7~

the author, resulted in the product of tension and initial Susceptibility

being about 15 % smaller than it would have been in case of irregularly
distributed crystals * The authors used for their own measurements the
arrangement shown in Fig. 1. For carrying out the experiment it was put
into a high-pressure chamber with 25 mm diameter. The method adopted
permitted to measure the pressure prevailing in this chamber accurate
to 5 kg/mm2 and the temperature accurate to 0,050. The field coil
consisting of 200 windings of copper wire generated a magnetic field
between 3 and 9 oe. The low-potential circuit consisted of a coil of
2000 windings ana a balliatid galvanometer. In order to provide for
the possibility of considering resistance changes of this coilq a checking
coil with a stan&ard inductance of 10 mH was connected to it in series.
Corresponding to the relation R = all the measurements furnished the result
x - ati, where at implies the sum of several galvanometer deflectlons
and i the ampexe3ge in the field coil. The designation x was intro-
duced for the sum of x computed at different values of i. Table III
demonstrates, for example, that there is no systematic dependence of this
magnitude on the pressure. The high hydrostatic pressure changed, how-
ever, both, the spring rigidity and the compressibility of all parts of

the generatrices towards the base, while being subjected to compression forces uni-

mbnts, comparing them with theoretical results calculated on the grounds of his
earlier work (Ref. 1: Nieliniowe zagadnienie dotyczace ugiV6 powloki o postaci
