-The authors Investigated the condition of the ears and mucous membrane of 'he
upper respiratory tract In 173 tobacco factory workers in Lublin. A frequent ap-
pearance of atrophic lesions of the mucous membrane of the nose, pharynx and
tonsils, without a preceding phase o( acute inflammation and hyperthrophics of
the m9 .cous membrane was noted. The frequency and the degree of Intensity of
atrophic catarrha of mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract grow with-
the years of work with tobacco. In 3516 of workers the chronic catarrhal otitis me-
dia was found with a weakening of hearing of about 20 db. of the conduction type, .
appearing already in young persons and growing In Intensity with the years otwork
In the 'tobacco- industry. The atrophy of mucous membrane of the upper respiratory.
-tract arises probably due to a mechanical and mechanical-chemical action of the
-tobacco dust on mucous membranes. The passing of atrophic catarrh of the mucous
membrane from the nasq-pharyngeal cavity to the eustachtan tube and the middle
ear may Induce a catarrhal otitis rnedia.~ The rarity of angina and acute inflamma-
tion bf the upper respiratory tract*amo*ng the tobacco factory workera suggests
that'the'tobacco dust may possess some bacteriostatic properties.'
