TITLE: Pitting on Nitrided Sliding Surfaces of Cylinder Bushings in Internal
C6mbustion Engines

TEXT: The article describes tests made in order to determine the cause of
pit formation.on nitrided sliding surfaces of cylinder bushings made of steel type
38 Mi. Agreat number of pits, some of them 1.0 mm/diameter, was noted on sliding
surfaces of cylinder bushings. These bushings are produced by forging and after
machining and hardening, were nitrided in two stages to a depth of 0.55 to 0.85 mm,
according to following specifications: first stage - temperature 510 t 100C, hard-
eningtime 20 hours, ammonia dissociation 20 to 35%; second stage - temperature
540 100C, hardening time 35 to 50 hours, ammonia dissocieion 40 to 55%. Pit
formation was noted after the polishing depth of 0.15 mm was reached. The hardness
of the nitrided surface was 800 - 850 HV and afterpolishing 700 - 630 HV. Core
hardness ranged from 32 - 37 HRC. A number of nitrogen hardening tests were made
under variable conditions and no pitting was noted if the following parameters were

applled. Two-stage nitrogen hardening: for the first stage temperature should be
510 - 50C, hardening time 25 hours, ammonia dissociation 20 30%, for second-stage:
temperature 525 t 50C, hardening time 50 - 60 hours, ammonia dissociation 25 - 40%.
In case 'where single-stage hardening is necessary the'following parameters should be
adhered to: temperature 515 t 50C, hardening time 75 - 85 hours, ammonia dissocia-
tion 25 - 40%. In both cases ammonia pressure was 50t 10 mm of water head. Ammonia
was-cooled off with silica gel and hardness of nitrided surface was 94o - 98o Hv.
In their conclusion the authors point out: pit formation arises due to crumbling of
grain during the polishing process; micro-cracks appear where nitrogen grids are
formed; the cause of nitrogen-grid formation Iis a much too high hardening tempera-

Abstract: patient, 22.5 g). Another 300 patients under
observation, also received 2-3 g of I up to the
day following a drop of temperature, and then
after a ?-day interval, for another 7 days,
1 g/day (an average of 23.3 g overall). The re-
lapses depended mainly on the severity of the
disease: in 210 severely ill,,they amounted to
,21.9%; in 136 moderately ill, 11.87o and in 54
with light illness, 5.5%. Of 100 patients,
treated with I uninterruptedly, in 62 patients
the treatment of whom started on the lst-2nd
wook of disease, 24.2% relapsas were observed,
and 26o9% in 38 patients whose treatment was be-
gun on the 3rd-4th week. Of 300 patients re-
