The gas was contained in a I cm diameter, 80 cm long quartz tube mounted on the axis of a 7 ca diameter waveguide of circular cross section, excited in the TZ].l .,,mode at 3.15.160z. The waveguide was so terminated that the standing wave ratio did-' not exceed 1.3., Approximately 16 cm,of the length of the quartz tube was within theri high field portion of the waveguide, and the malpetic field sttongth did not vary by more 'than 1% over that portion of the tube. The plasmas produced In the quartz tube were investigated with a double probe and by means ol loading by the plagmas of a resonant cavity operating in the 3 em.wavelength region. Visible radiatio;2 from the plasmas was recorded with a pbotomultiplier. The rf eloctric field atrongthi Card 1/2 UDC: 533.9 A&C'NR.- ApSols747 required to inittate a discharge was minimum when the magnetic flol.d.strength was such that the electron Larmor frequency was equal to the exciti4,,r frequency. The charged particle density of the plasma (as measured with the resonant cnvity), the probe current, and the intensity of the visible radiation from the plasma, however, were maximum when the Larmor frequency was one-half or one-third of the exciting frequency, and the corresponding curves showed no maxima or other features when the. Larmor frequency was equal to the exciting frequency. Plasmas with, charged particlq densities exceeding 1012 cm-3 . were obtained In argon at 0.01 mm kJg in a 500 Oe magnetic field with an r9 power of 10 71/cm~. It is suggested that the maxima at the second =4'third harmonics of the Larmor frequency may be due to nonlinear effectl or to space dispersion, and that the low plasma density at the Larmor frequency may be due to.reduced penetration of the high frequency field into the plasma. It is noted that G.J.Landauer (Nucl, Energy, C4, 395, 1962) observed uhf radintion from a :.*plasma in a'maguetic field at,harmonics of.the Larmor frequency, but not at the Larmor ~':frequen6y~:itself. Assumption of a constant vector of turbu3.ent friction in this ground layer leads to uniform accel- eration conditicns in the upper boundary of this layer. The second ap~rox- imation eliminates terms proportional to a].titude, leaving only exponential and trigonometric functions of dimensionless altitude. TITLE: Investigation of Capture Centers and Kinetics of Relaxation Processes in Alkali~-Haloid Crystallophosphors (Issledovaniye tsentrov zakhvata i kinetiki relakeatsionnykh protsessov v shchelochno-galoidnykh kristallofosforakh.) PERIODICALs Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR. Seriya Fizicheskaya, 1957, Vol 21, #59 pp 693-694 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The role of capture centers of various types in recombinational luminescence of alkali-haloid crystallophosphors was studied by several methods. Capture centers of a basis substance (P, F1.10 M9 0 P, etc) rd 92+ + capture centers created by bi-valence admixtures Ca and Sr are manifested in thermal de-luminescence and optical flash. The number and main characteristics of these centers can be oonsiderably changed by means of plastic deformation and temr perature treatment. The effect of several activators (Ag+, Cu +, T1+, Pb 2+ and Mn 2+ on the spectrum of excited absorption, thermal de-luminescence Card 1/2 and thermal decolorization of phosphors based on NaCl and KC1 TITLEt Investigation of Capture Centers and Kinetics of Relaxation Prooeasea in Alkali-Haloid Cryntiillophosphora (Isaledovaniyo tsentrov zakhvata i kinetiki relaksatoionnykh proteassov v shchelochno-galoidnykh kristallofoeforakh.) was investigated~ Especially many electrons are stored in-phos- phors with two activators (e,g., NaCl-Ca2+, Ag+'). Activator capture centers are also manifested in recombinational lumines- cenceg but their existence is often disguised by temperature quenching. The distribution of electrons and holes over capture levels, essentially changes during the processes of decay and flash. This distribution, which is established in the result of a lasting excitation by X-rays9 is not a temperature equilibrium one. The d9gree of filling capture levels by electrons can be as high as 30 %, but is not complete. The report was followed by a discussion. One Russian reference is cited. It was found that recombination luminescence is excited in the area of activator absorption bands and also in the area of main absorption of the basic substance. Schwarz Physics and Astronomy Institute, Acadepq of Sciences of the Estonian S.S.R., Tartu, U.S.S.R. A number of alkali halide phosphors activated by monovalent and divalent ions having the electronic configuration of neutral mercury were prepared. Diffusion and precipitation of activator ions were investigated as were absorption, emission, and radiationless processes within the impurity center. Energy transfer by means of excitons and electron-hole pairs between the luminescent center, the host crystal and color centers werealso studied. It was demonstrated that within the individual elementary stages of thermal deooloration# the effectiveness of the rmo luminescence remains constant. The effectiveness of thermoluminescence differed for the different elementary stages. The reasons of the rules observed are discussed. [Abstracter,s notet Complete translatiori.] Card 1/1
