Isonicotinoyl hydrazide hFs an aatitVbe-rcular action, 'cut its therapeutic index is

Para-a-iiinosalicylic acid and streptomycin and are better tolerated by ex1ptl animals
than the hydrazide of isonicotinic acid. This made it possible to select f1rom them

"Development With Age of the Medulla Oblongata in Relation to Problems of
the Center of Respiration"
Izv. Akad. --red. 9auk- RS-eSR, 47, 053 pp 44-52
The development of nerve calls and blood vessels of the medulla oblongata was
studied at embryonal stages and after birth at the point of the branching
off of the first cervical nerves and of the auditory area. In a 4 1/2-month-
old Sabryo, the author found A very large amount of cell elements in the
unit area; 260 cells, for instance, at the dorsaL nucleus of the vagus.
As the fetus grew, the cells increased and became differentiated. In the
dorsal center of the newborn of normal weight, two thirds~f the numbers of
cells belonged to nondifferentiated neuroblasts, 20-22 cells to the unit
area, but the growth proc:6ss was far from completed. The development cf the
blood supply-was similarly studied. Investigation of the development of cell
element a of the medulla oblongata was continued up to the age of ? year a and
the evidence is that at that time of childhood the respiratory function is
well 6stLbllshed, especially if the development of the langshas similarly
progressed. (RZhBiol, No 4, 1954)

PERIODICAL: Zhurnal obshchey khimii, 1959, Vol 29, Nr 3, PP 1042-1044 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The plant Ammothamnus song6ricus which grows in Central Asia
was discovered by Massagetov as an alkaloid carrier. The whole
part of the plant growing-above the ground was subjected to
the extraction. All: alkaloids in it'(1%) were'extracted with
ether and chloroform. The ether frac4u--'-,:.n caiksted almost com-
pletely of Sofokarpin. An alkaloid of the melting point 198-
2000 which crystallizes with one molecule water 'gas precipitated
from the chloroform fraction. The ultimate analysis corresponds
to the empirical formula C 15H240 2N2 H20. One methylimide group
does not contain the alkaloid. Only the perchlorate of tillp-
melting point 219-2200, and the picrate of the melting point
2150 (under decomposition) as well as the iodine methylate
could be obtained in crystalline state of the salts. The

On the Alkaloids of Ammothamnus Songoricus
N-oxide of-matrine'was' confirmed'by the reduction of the base
to matrine, by zinc dust iri'an acid medium. This oxide exists
according to H. Kondo (Ref 1) and E. Ochiai (Ref 2 4n two
hydrate forms. On subjecting the chloroform fraction to
chromatography.over Al 0 several fractions with different
2 3
melting points, 153.;2070, were separated. The base of the
melting point'2070 corresponds according to its.properties to
the N-oxide of the'matrine described by Ochiai (Ref 2). After
storage its melting point is reduced to 198-2000. The other
fractions, with-lower melting points, have all the same specific
rotary power, contain a crystallization water and are trans-
formed-into matrine with a good yield during the reduction by
zinc dust in an acid medium. The matrine was oxidized by the
authors with hydrogen peroxide in order to compare the alkaloid.
obtained by"them immediately with the N-oxide of matrine. The
produced*N-oxid6 of matrind'was like the base separated from
the plant obtained in various forms with melting points from

Two alkaloids were isolated from the leaves and-young
branches of Sophora griffithii: pachycarpine (from-the
ether fraction, 1.4% of the plant weight) and cytl~lne----
(chloroform fraction, 0.13%). Traces of two othert
bases were detected in the mother liquor by subjecting
it to paper chromatography: matrine and sophoramine.

Title The use of a soluble antigen of dysentery bacteria for parenteral immuni-
zation
'Periodical Zhur. mikrobiol. epid. i immun. 4, 30-35, Apr 1951,
Abstract Experiments utere performed on rabbits and mice to determine the toxicity,
anti-genicity, and immunogenic properties of immunogen -- a polysaccharide-
proteip complex extracted from Flexner and Sonne dysentery bacteria with
acetic ~acid. This substance is neither a complete antigen of the bac-
teria, nor an endotoxin, but combines the desirable characteristics of
both, The experiments are described and illustrated by charts. Similar
work of other Soviet researchers investigating dysentery is mentioned~
