"The Unification of TaNIMIash Welding Tractors," (Av-to. Delo, 1952, 23 Jan., p. 16)
The U.T. series of submerged arc welding tractors, designed and constructed by
ToNIITKash, has been simplified and modernised and now consists of two models only,
the light model U2-1250 giving welding currents from 300-1250 amps. and the heavy
model UT-2000M, giving a range of 300-2000 amps. A line, drawing is provided of the
heav7 model and there are several illustrations showing how it can be set up for various
types of welding. The main specifications are listed.
Each model comprlses a welding bead, flux pad and wire feed, arrunged on a beam
which may be carried on or underalung from a self-propelled carriage.

TITLE: A Method for Increasing the Accuracy of Measurement of
the Intensity of Radioactive Emission
PERIODICALs Pribory i tekhnika eksperimenta, 1960, No.6, PP-23-27
TEXT: The principle of the method is as follows. The
radiation detector is irradiated both by the radiation under
investigation (int6nsity n ) pnd the radiat.':,.q from a standard
ens y nL). Th"
source (int it .. e total electrical signal produced in
the detector under trie action of the two r-adiatlons is fed into a
common electronic device at the output of which two signals are V ~
sepairAted out. The magnitude of one of them (U ) is proportional
to the sum of the two intensities and the magnitude of the second
(U2) i's proportional to the standard intensity only. The signal U
is used to determine the intensity of the radiation under investi-
gation, whilst the signal U2 is used in the automatic control of
the readings and their correction. The automatic correction of
the readings is carried out by measuring the ratio U /U 2 In
order to be able to separate out the signals U. and 2 at the

output of the devicea, the magnitude of the control beam of radiation
is periodically varied.-The block diagram of the instrument is
shown in Fig.l. The detector' I 'is irradiated from the left by
the radiation under investigation and from below by the control
beam due to the additional source 5 . The control beam is VK
modulated with a frequency .w.. usingka rotating absorber as shown
in Fig.l. If the intensity 0~ the control beam follows the law
n = nk(I + sin w-t-), then- the signal at the anode of the photo-

of the form U.= UIA '+ Uk (1 +-sin w 00. The constant component
U" + U is thus proportional to the sum of the two intensities,
while the amplitude of the variable component U k is proportional
to the intensity of the control beam. The total signal U is fed
into a dynamic capacitor 2 in which it is transformed into an
alternating signal with a frequency wl>> WO and is then amplified
by the main amplifier 3. The amplifier is followed by a linear
detector 4 which produces at its output the constant voltage

and k 2 depend on the parameters of the detectors 4 and 6. The
voltages 'U 1 and U 2 are fed into the electronic potentiometer 7,
which is connected in such a way that its amplifier sees the
difference between U 1 and a fraction of U 2 , which is applied tothe
rheochord of the potentiometer. The potentiometer is so arranged
that Its indications satisfy the condition

of this resistance which feeds the amplifier of the potentiometer.
The ratio r/R is shown directly by the potentiometer. It is shown
that changes in the parameters of the detector of the radiation, the
dynamic capacitor and the main amplifier have no effect on the
measurements. Details are given of the basic circuits involved and
some experimental tests performed with the apparatus. There are

TITLE: Comparison of some methods for evaluating the technologi:al strength
of aluminum alloys in welding
PERIODICAL: Svarochnoye proizvodstvo, no. 4, 1962, 23-26
TEXV: The authors compared results fron evaluating the resistance of
aluminum alloys to hot crack formation during welding. The results were obtained
with the aid of various test methods. The tests were made with alloys whose
crack sensitivity in welding was known from their use in welded structures. The
investigations were carried out for the purpose of selecting the best test
methods. The tests were made with three technological samples (cross-shaped,
fishbone and round specimens% and with the use of the VVTU method, when the
specimens are welded at CVV constant and the specimen is stretched during
cry stall ization perpendicularly to the cdain axis at different rates. It was
found that round specimens were suithble for the qualitative evaluation of hot
,crack resistance In the welding of alloys. For the quantitative evaluat1fon the

MVTU method should be employed. To determine the proneness of alloy to the
development of cracks, the cross-shaped and fishbone specimens can be used.
However, the crosa-shaped specimen yields a greater straggling of test results
than the fishbone specimen and the welding process is hard to automate when
using this type of sample. High metal consumption Is another deficiency of
cross-shaped specimens. The fishbone specimen is free of these defects and In
more reliable in evaluating the proneness of the base and filler metals to the
development of hot cracks in welding. There are 4 figures and 8 references:

ABSTRACT: The authors study the antirriction properties and durability of components
diffusion-plated with chromium. The specimens were put into iron containers with
various chrome plating mixtures and the containers were then placed in a furnace where
they were heated at 1075-11000C for 6-8 hours. The chromium-containing medium was
chromium oxide and ferrochrome. Four plating mixtures were used with the following
compositions (in %): 1. FeCr--50, A1203-45, NH4Cl--5; 2. Cr203-80 ,-6, IM4Cl--4,
A1203--10; 3. Cr203-80, Ba2CO3-4, c-6, A1203-6, NH4cl--4; 4. FeC1145, A1203--6.

iron depends on plating time up to 8-10 hours and then remains constant. Hardness
also increases with holding time. It war, found that knurling followed by chrome plat-
ing is preferable to porous chrome plating for improving oil adhesion on surfaces sub-
jected to friction. The durability of components with chrome-plated knurled surfaces
may be increased by treatment in a solid carbonizer of the following composition (in
%) carbon-50, Na2CO3--20, Fe (filings)-30. The treatment consists of holding for
5 hours at 9000C. Tinned and sulfidized surfaces show the beat running-in properties
with coefficients of friction of 0.0500 and 0.0550. Parkerized ispecimenalhave slightly
higher coefficients of friction-0.0670-0-Wo. Chrome plating tdxtures of the
second and third compositions gave the best results vith respect to wear. Orig. art.

Periodical : Nauka I Zhizn' 21A, 13-U, April 1954
Abstract Despite tha~great advancements in agrieulture the demand-; of the
population for food and of industry for raw mstarlala are not
satisfied. Knowledge, of the biological peculiarities of-each plant
is urged. Moisture should be preserved and mothods of using snow
plosia and moisture traps of corn stalks, twlLmrp ate., are cited.
The article doala with all phases of harvest-increasing schemes,
sUressing fertilizars. Sprinkling beets idth a solution of super-
aulfates and chloride of lime has bccn found to increase sugar con-
tent and for this work the airplane has beon found convenient.

Abstract It is found-that plants, especially grain, can be "fed" by sprinkling
chemicals on IV-he stalks as well as by embedding them in the soil to.'
be absorbed by the roots. Successful work of this kind has been done
by the une of an airplane. Figures of results obtained with various
kinds of grain are prest-;nted. Illustration.
