Experiments have shown that the initial phase of deformations is essentially a phase of compaction. In this phase there is no marked settling or side- slip of the soil which may be dangerous to the normal operation of the structure. The next phase is characterized by the format;on of a solidified kernel which separates from the surrounding soil by rupture surfaces. It is specifically in this phase that consider- able, markedly increased settling develops that may upset the normal iunctionin8 of the structure. The Cu-Fe thermocouple was examined; Ch-e thermo-emf was measured in the -2530 to 10000C range. Regardless of the reference temperatures chosen, the characteristic inflection point of the E=f(t2-tl) curve for the Cu-Fe couple is not displaced.
