ABSTRACT: In the beginning the author gives a surTey of publications
which ha-re appeared since the discovery of the Cambrian in
the mentioned mountains (1923, Refs 2-9911). Recently it was
found that due to the facial -rariability of the sediments for
the Cambrian cross-section the traditional terminology of the
suites may not be used freely (Ref 10). The investigations
carried out by the author showed that in the said area the
variability is not only great, but that it is also characterized
by the location in certain structural zones of the facial com-
plexes typical for it. Figure I shows the dependence of the
facies composition of the Cambrium on the losation of great
structural elements. The predominance of carbonate rocks in all

development of archaeocyathide-algae riffs is typical for the
Cambrian sedimento of the Bateneyal,iy chain; they prove the
shallow sea in that region. Cambriqn cross sections in the
catchment area of the riTer Belyy Iyus look different. There
the Lower Cambrian is represented by a mighty sedimentary
Yoloanic series of complex structure. These great differences
between the two last mentioned cross sections made the author
consider the two regions as great and independent structural.
elements: the said catchment area forms a geosynclinal trough.
From this point of Yiew the Bateneyckiy chain must be regarded
as a geoantisynelinal. There are I figure and 14 references,
14 of which are Soviet.

TRANSLATION: The authors discuss the systematic results of using an intermediate
magnetic recording station in deep seismic sounding ~pejat ons.. The unit was basea
on a,seismic prospecting station. The basic improve s 'were increased sensitivity,
expansion of the frequency range and reduction of inherent noises in the equipment.
The principle of frequency modulation is used. The dynamic range of the instrument
is 50 db, the inherent noise level reduced to the input under full amplification is
-0.3 mw, the_passband at a 3 db level is 2-30 'cps, the number of channels is 26, the

Arecording time is 10 minutes. The unit was tested in the central Kazakhstan. Re-
1cording's on various filtrations made it possible to determine the optimum conditions
~for recordiDg various types of waves. The authors point out the advantages of the
iInstrumentover ordinary oscillographic recording from the standpoint of the possi-.
ability for using various versio.ns of frequency 'selection, grouping and mixing under
Irlecurrent excitation conditions. In addition, the.intermediate magnetic recording
~station may be used for recording waves of various intensity for long intervals of
r
itime. It is pointed out that a distinction should be rode between'recording sta-
i
itions and repeat recording stations. The recording should be done at a stable and
i
irather low scanning spee7d to produce the seismogr'ams necessary for a. general survey
iof the material.

ABSTRACT: This symposium, organized on th 'e initiative of the Institute of the Earth's Crust,
was attended by more than 300 crystallographers, crystallochemists, mineralogists, geoche-
mists, chemists, radiochemists, metallographers and physicists. The seven papers presented
at this symposium were: "New Findings on Isomorphism 11 (role of the geometric factor in the
isomorphism of ionic compounds, the theory of domain isomorphism, the definition of isomor-
phism as "the entry of ions which do not disturb x-ray monocrystallinity") (N. V. Belov);

decrease in isomorphic scattering of raro clonionts in the principal rock-forming minorals

the formation and growth of crystals) (D. P. Grigorlyev). The presentation of the papers was
followed by a lively discussion which chiefly focused on such problems as the definition of iso-
morphism from the crystallochemical standpoint, the energy characteristics of isomorphic
substitutions, the relation of anomalous ("heterogeneous") isomorphism to isomorphism in
general. Several brief communications were presented on such topics as precision x-ray

the Symposium proposed the following two variants of a definition of isoi-.,orphism: Illso-
morphism is the phenomenon of the substitution of atoms or of their discrete groups (comple-
xes) in a crystalline phase of variable composition" and Illsomorphism is the property of the
mutual substitution of atoms or of their discrete groups (complexes) in crystalline matter,
thus resulting in the formation of a crystalline phase of variable composition. 11 Further
the resolution recommended publishing the proceedings of the Symposium and organizing
similar meetings in the future.
