ABSTRACT: The effect of tin and lead on glass formattlVdid on some physicochemical
properties was studied in oxygen-free As-Ge-Se glasses, Vhere Ge.was gradually replaced by
the heavieranalogs. In all the systems, As-Ge-Sn-Se, As-Ge-Pb-Se, and As-Ge-Sn-Pb-Se,
the Introduction of even 5% or less tin or lead caused substantial changes in the position of,the
boundaries of glass formation as compared with the original As-Ge-Se system, and defects
which increased with Sn and Pb content. Tin In glasses with excess Se forms SnSe4/2
tetrahedra, which. are the same type of structural elements as those formed by germanium.
In the As-Ge-ga-Se system, as the seleniuni present becomes insuffioient for the formation of
-SnSe4/2-tetrahedra, the following now structural elements awar..

TITLEt Approximation of Continuous Periodic Functions by Fourier Sums
PERIODICAL: Izvestiya Akademii nauk SSSR, Sariya matematicheskaya,1960,
Vol.:'24,'No. 2, pp. 243-296
TEXTs Let f(x) be a continuous 2Z-periodic function, S n(f,x) its Fourier
partial sum. For different classes IX the author gives asymptotically
rigorous expressions- for f7wt 11f(x) - Sn(flx)" . The considered classes
/IX are characterized either by conditions which must be satiafied by the
smoothness modulus of fl(x) or by the possibility of special integral re-
presentations for f(x). Some older results of S.M. Nikollskiy are improxed.,
Altogether the author gives 11 theorems and 6 lemmata. He-thanks S.B.
Stechkin for the subject and discussions.
There are 13 referencess 9 Soviet, 2 Hungarian, 1 Polish and 1 French.

TITLE: Studying the stressed state of machine tool frame members by the photoe astic
method
SOURCE: Stanki i instrument, no. 7, 1966, 19-21
TOPIC TAGS: photoelasticity, stress analysis, machine took
ABSTRACT: The authors use the optical method for stndying the'stressed state of roll-
turning lathe beds. This method can also be used for studying the overall stressed
state of such a machine. This method, makes it possible to determine experimentally
the isoclinic parameter and main tangential stresses at a givdn point in the two-di-
mensional model of a cross section of the frame and to evaluate normal stresses on un-
loaded contours. "Stress division" is used to determine normal stresses at points ly-
ing within the cross section contour with respect to the isoclinic parameter and the
main stress differences. This method is very useful for the experimental determination
and selection of the optimum shape for the cross section of the bed. Orig. art. has:

TFXT: This lathe model was built by the Kramatorskiy zavod tyazhelogo
stankostroyeniya (KZTS)-(Kramatorsk Ifeavy Maciflne Tool Plant.).im 1962. The for.-
roconcrete lathe bed was depigned, manufactured and tested together with the
Kramatorskiy nauchno-issledovatellskiy i proyektno-tekhnologicheskiy institut
tyazhelogo mashinostroyeniya (NIIPTrlash) (Kraffiatorsk Scientific Research and
Technological Planning Institute of Heavy Machinery). It is pointed out that,
besides the economic efficiency'.. the iuse of ferroconcrete for the lathe bed an-
sures high compression ptrength, good vibration absorption, simplicity of sh~p-

is presented and the following technical data are given: Maximum length between
centers - 06,300 mm; height of centers - 650 mm; maximum diameter of workpie'ce-
over the bed - 1,250 M, over the carriage - 900 mm; maximum weight of work-
piece to be machined - 30,000 kg; range of spindle revolutions per minute -
3,15-200 (steplessly adjustable); feed ranges, mm/rev: longitudinal slides -
0.18-8, transverse slides 0.1-5, upper slides - 0,04-2; thread to be cut:
metric thread, pitch in mm 1-60, inch thread, number of threads per inch -
1/2-30, module thread, pitch in modules - 0.25-90; overall dimensions - 13,200 x
x 2,500 x 2,060 mm; weight of lathe without electric equipment 39,100 kg. A
comparison of the production costs of the lathe with ferroconcrete bed on the
one hand and cast-iron bed on the other shows that 1,181 rubles are saved if
ferroconcrete is used as bed material. There is 1 figure.

TITLE: The influence of periodic interference on the quality
of television reproduction. (Vliyaniye periodicheskoy

ABSTRACT: Results are given of an experiment, carried out
by the author at the Leningrad Television Centre
(Leningradskiy Televisionnyy Tsentr) and the TV
Laboratory of MEIS (Labotatoriya televideniya "MEIS")
in IL950-1951 on the evaluation of periodic interference
on the quality of TV picture. The equipment for the
experiment consisted of a TV receiver with two input
terminals: one for the video signals and the other for
a controlled interference, simulated by a standard
signal generator type GSS-6. The mains voltage was
regulated to within + 3%, the frequency response of the
receiver was flat to 4 Mc/s and down by 2.5 db at 6 Me/a.
The quality of pictures was evaluated both by
professional and non-specialist personnel having normal
and defective sight. Frequencies were kept close to
0.1; 0.2; 0.4; 0.8; 1.6; 3.2 and 6.4 Mc/s for unmodulated
and 10, 15, 20 and 25 Mc/s for modulated interference.
The following were investigated: the influence of non-
modulated interference on stationary and moving pictures
266
The influence of periodic i.nterference on the quality
of television reproductions (cont.)
and of modulated interfere.;~ce on moving pictures only.
Four types of interference~vere distinguished: so
strong that no icture coul-,1 be followed (graphs 2 and
3 of the signal ~interferenct relation); noticeable but
permitting the viewing with a satisfactory quality of
the picture (graph 3); barely to be seen and finally
not noticeable. The following conclusions were drawn:
the non-modulated interference is visible up to 3 Me/s.
Above this figure it produces only changes in brightness
and contrast; the modulated interference is more
noticeable, especially at frequencies above 3 Me/s;
the allowable signal-to-interference ratio depends on
the frequency of same. It is 45 db at frequencies below
0.2 Mc/s, falls with frequency and is 16 db only at
frequencies near the upper limit of the video pass-band
(when it becomes aharmonic of the line frequency).
Large variations of signal-to-interference ratio (15 to
20 db) were observed for small variations of the
interference frequency (appr. 8 kc/s), which could help
to reduce the interference of any TV channel. It is
thought that there should be a differential scale instead
of the fixed standard signal-to-interference figure of
55 db, depending on the frequency at which the inter-
ference occurs (the figure of 55 db is recommended by

ABSTRACT questions cou"ectedwith-the influence of the periodic inter-
ferences an the quality of the television picture so far not
been dealt with in SoT4et publications. Here the permissible
amount of interferences is brought into conAection with some
oharaateristies of the plant and the peculiarities of television.
As a result of theoretical and experimeAtal inVestigatiojkffi the
following may be said:
1.) The amount (S/int) perm (S-aignal, Int-interferenae, Peru-
permissible) in the plant and hence also the quantity of the
permissible Yoltage of the interference can be determined by
computation on the basis of some characteriaties of television
and the form of the amplitude characteristic including the
reception valve.
2.) the possibility of recogniging the Image of the interferen-
ces depends upon the relative distinctness of that part of.the

picture on which the interference Image is Impreasod. The most
dangerous are the "grey fields" with a relative distinctness of
the order 9f 092 - 0,3 and 0#12 - 0,2 respectively, according to
the intensity of the contrast P.
3,) Computations shuw that an increase of the parameter
of the valve causes a decrease of (8/int) perm i.e. an increase
of the permissible ixterfereiLaa. -voltage, If I- inGreases up to
2 - 2,5 then (S/iRt) - perm remains approximately constant almost
within the entire range of modification of relative distinctness.
An increase of r up to 2 - 2v5 is therefore desirable for a
decrease of the distinctness of interference Images.
4.) For periodic interferences whial"form an image in the form
of verticals or slightly inclined stripes the amount (S/int)
perm is equal to 45 to 46 db.at frequencies below Op2 MHz and
decreases with increasing frequency. On the upper limit of the.
transmission stripe it approximately amounts to 16 db. (With

Selection of the Material for the Electromagnetic
Shielding of Rooms (Vybor materiala dlya elektromagnitnogo

PERIODICALt Radiotekhnikag 1958, Vol 13, Nr il, pp 60-66 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: Already in 1948 the author suggested that for the purpose of
shielding rooms steel be used instead of copper (Refs 4, 5),
This was carried out in practice for the first time by V. G.
Kozinskiy at the Leningradakiy tolevizionnyy tsentr (Leningrad
Television Center) in 1951. The use of steel for the purpose of
shielding rooms was strongly advocated by the collaborators of
the Tsentraltnaya laboratoriya po bor'be s industrialinymi
pomekhami radiopriyt~ra (TaLIR) (Centrl~ Laboratory f or the
Klimiffation of Indastritil Tnterfertdnce/Mio Rec!Wtion). However,
oDjections uiv still being raisea aga-kjsuL the use of steel for
the purpose of screening-off rooms. These objections are 9hown
to be unfounded. The most serious argumentt which, however, was
not made by anybody objecting to the use of steel, is the

plabes compared to that of copper plates. It is, however, showng
that the damaging influence caused by these gaps can be
counteracted by means of connecting flanges. The role of such
flanges can well be played by the weld points in the plates. -
Instead of metal sheets also metal lattices can be used, the
behavior of which differs from that of the sheets or plates.
When selecting the material for a lattice screen greatest
attention must be paid to choosing a suitable lattice-spacing.
The material used must satisfy the following 4 demands:
1) The screening- or shielding effect must be as high as
possible fl Stability against corrosiont and mechanical
strength: 3 Low costs- 4) Assembly must be easy and envolve
low costs. - The first two demands are met satisfactorily by
steel- and copper sheets as well as bya coppor lattice. With
respect to the demands mentioned under 3) and 4), steel will be
found more satisfactory.
