TITLE: Symmetry relations for the cross susceptibility tensor
SOURCE: Zhurnal eksperimentallnoy i teoreticheskoy fiziki, v. 51, no. 1, 1966, 156-164
TOPIC TAGS: susceptibility tennor, quantum theory, perturbation theory, nonlinear of-
fect, correlation function
ABSTRACT:''Some general properties of the cross susceptibility, with account of spatial
dispersion,.,, are considered on the basis of the spectral representation, for a close
qua um-mec9anical system cted upon by an external field. The motion of th system
under the action of the field is described by a density matrix, the equation for which
is solved by time-dependent perturbation theory. Rymmetry relations that are general-
izations of the Onsager reciprocity relations for the linear susceptibility are derived
f~rom the invariance of the equations of motion with respect to time reversal. The con-
nection between the nonlinear response and -the fluctuations of quantities corresponding
to the dynamical variables in the unperturbed syrtem is established in general form.
The cross susceptibility of the system characterizes the nonlinear response-to a mono-
chromatic field. Some of the general properties which follow from the definition of
the cross susceptibility and its spectral representation and which are independent ot

the specific form of the Hamiltonian of the system are given. The connection between
the nonlinear response of the system to an external perturbation and the fluctuation
of three quantitities in a state of thermodynamic equilibrium is established, in anal-,
ogy with the relation between the linear susceptibility and the fluctuations in an un-
perturbed system (the Callen-Welton theorem or the fluctuation-dissipation theorem).
It is also noted that the fluctuations in a system in the presence of external fields
can also be expressed in terms of the correlation functions derived (luring the course
of the analysis. The author thanks V. M. Payn for a discuadon of the problem treatei
in this work and for very valuable remarks. Orig. art. has: 37 formulas.
