Abstract This work was made at the Tellermanovsk experimental
forest ground of the Forestry Institute of the Academy

in oak woods of four of the most wide distributed forest
types on the grounds. The crown measurements were made
in corformity with the stories. The nature of the inter-

The largest crown covering was seen in younG oak groves.
The tree crowns of all species in overmature oak woods
were asymetrical owinG to their having grown to the side
of spaces in the canopy and disruptions in their prcce3ses

signs of sap run in the birch do not appear until
more than a week after the run in maple has started,
and the run takes place at above-freezing tempera-

run in the maple occurs at temperatures above 10.
The most rapid sap flow takes place when the tempera-
ture of the air is 5 degrees and hiCher. The end
of the run is connected with intense transpiration.

TITLE: On the problem of magnetic recording on a carrier with a permeability greater
than unity
SOURCE: Vsesoyuznaya nauchnaya sessiya, posvyashchennaya Dnyu radio. 22d, 1966,
Sektsiya radioveshchaniya, elektroakustiki i zvukozapisi, Doklady. Moscow, 1966, 31-34
TOPIC TAGS: magnetic recording, magnetic permeability, character reading equipment,

ABSTRACT: It ip experimentally shown that a magnetic carrier with a permeability
greater than unity results in redistribution of the scattering field near the gap of
the recording head and increases the effective length of the gap. A recording head
with a gap of 50 p and a clearance of 30 V between the head and a type 2 metallic car-
rier 7-10 V thick gave a magnetic impression exceeding the length of the working gap
by more than an order of magnitude. Experimental curves for the parameters of the
magnetic impression as a function of gap dimensions for noncontact recording with a
clearance of 30 P show that the optiinurr, length of the gap exceeds the clearance between
head and carrier by a factor of approximately 5. The results of this study indicate

ithat the shunting effect of high-permeability carriers must be taken into account in
,noncontact magnetic recording, and that measurer, should be taken to reduce this effect.!
1R in possible that thin may be achieved by proper design of the pole pieces In the
agnetic head. Magnetic carriers with low permeability should be used or the thick-
ness of the carrier should be reduced where possible. Orig. art. has: 2 figures.

Title Corn - a Precious Forerunner of Winter Crops.
Orig Pub Zemledeliye, 1956, No 9: 22-24
Abstract Based on tests made at the kolkhoz "Verayy Put"' (The True
Path) in Moscow Oblast., at the Budennyy kblkhoz in Oaesiskaya
Oblast' and in the selection station of Rostov (between 1948
and 1952), it has been established that the 'highest yield of
winter crop wheat is obtained on non-cultivated fields after
either corn or superficial working over (shallow plowing with
a gang-plow). By plowing corn according to the square-nidus
method with lengthwise-lateral cultivation and by harvesting
the same during the lactic-waxy stage of ripeness.. the agro-
technical importance of the corn field for preceding wheat
is considerably increasing.

APSTRACT: A toroidal plasma installation is described, intended
t9 test the feasibility of using sausage instability for the dissi-
pation of the energy of the external electric field in a collision-
le~s plasma of toroidal configuration. Comparison of the plasma
current and field oscillograms has shown that the plasma resistance

sion frequency in the plasma (109 vs. the theoretically exXoted 306

sausage instability. From the active character of the plasma it is
also possible to calculate that the high frequency field.delivers
an energy of 3 kaV per particle -to the plasma. "The authors are.

The presseffect was studied in duralimin, avial, and other alloys by metallographic
and radiographic methods and by measuring mechanical properties. Mn produces a consider-
able presseffect, even in binary alloys and better strength depends onhe transition
from recrystallized structure to not crystallized one. The diagram of state w~iich Al
forms with the components could be established. It is assmied that Zr, Ti, V, and Yo allo-
yed to AI and 'in alloyed to Yg should produce the pres,,effect. (RZhFiz, No 7, 1955)
