Determination of the structure and conformation,of some substituted cyclopbntenones PERIODICAL: Akademiya nauk SSSR. Izvestiya. Otdeleniye khimicheskikh nauk, no. 1, 1963, 66-74 TEXT: The synthesis of the erythro isomer IA and threo isomer IB of 3,5- .dimethyl-5-(a-acetoxyethyl) a-cyclopenten~ne by condensation of 3.0-di- methyl_,&2-cyclopentenone with vinyl a6etate has already been described (Izv. AN SSSR, Otd. khim. n., in press). That reaction also produced the erythro and threo isomer of.3,5-dimethyl-5-(o(-acqtpxyot;hyl)-A3-cyclo- entenone (IIA, IIB) and the 2-ethylidene-3,5-di.1 ,aethyl- A4-cyclopentenbne, I). By analyzing the high resolution proton magnetic resonance (p.m.r.). M spectra it was possible to define the structure and conformation of IA, Card 1/4 j/o62 63/OCC/001/C-09/025 structural analysis oil chemicl~l ... The pom.r. spectra of 0.2-0-5 M solutions in C01 were taken 4 at room temperature and at 20.-529 N:c. Hexamethyl disiloxane was used as internal standard. The spectra were analyzed according to J. T. Arnold and M. E. Packard (J. Chem.-Phys., 19, 1608 (1951)). The slight difference betwoen the spectra of IA and IB led to the conclusion that there is no structural difference but only a different.steric oriontation of the groupal this was confirmed by converting IA and-1B into VI; Equally, IXA was obtained by hydrogenation frod VIIIA as well as from VIIIB. Conclusions:2 The isomerism is based ~n' a different position 'of the qubstituents at the asymmetric 0 atom.-,T,.vo steri Ic series are possible with 3 conformations 6 each (Fig. 6). One of these 'conformations must outnumber the'two other. The Ir. spectra of VIIIA, VIIIB and IXA showed thdt an intramolecular H bond exists at the hydroxy &roup of-VIIIA and IXA, which is absent in VIIIB. TITLEi Substituted cyclopentadienes and related compounds. VI. Tetramethyloyclopentadiene as an equilibrium mix- ture of isomers YERIODICAL: Zhurnal obahchey khimii, v. 33, no. 1, 1963, 84-91 ;TEXT: A continuation of previous work (DAN SSSR, 143, 1112 (1962)). The present study was aimed at an investigation of the isomeriza- Ition of tetramethylcyclopentadiene (A) by analogy with the isomerism. ;of dimethyloyclopentadienes studied,in an earlier work. The iBome- Xic mixture A was prepared from MeMgI/Et 0 and 2,3,4-trimethyl- A2_ 2 Icyclopentenone (obtained by the method of Nazarov et al (Izv. AN -1946, SSSR, OXhNj 529) decomposing the reaction mixture, with (a) diluted HCl at,-/3000, Ld (b) crushed ice at 00C. The yields of !A were respectively 66 and 72%. 70%-of the mixture was found to be 'S/079/63/033/001-/006/023 ',Substituted oyclopentadienee D204/D307 the isomer 1,,2,394-tetramethylcyclopentadiene (I); the 1,2,4,5,- liform (III) and probably the 1,2,3,5-form (II) were, also present. iAlmost pure III was obtained by slow rectification*of A on a high- efficiency column, at 50 - 600C, under vacuum; this could be re- I ;vereed to form I by heating. Formation of the energetically less !favorable isomer III is ascribed to stopping A from attaining ther- ;modynamic equilibrium. Adducts of maleic anhydride (MA), w*ith I and III were prepared in 68 - 76% yields (ether-benzene solutions 1000) and some simple derivatives of these adduots (the corre'8pond-~ ling dicarboxylic acid and dimethyl eater from the adduct of MA with .11; the corresponding y'-laotone acid and its methyl eater from the of MA with II) were prepared. The oatalytio activity of the com- plexes was shown to be connected with the nature of their electrore- duction which was determined by the formation of intermediate com- plexes during electroreduetion.
