Both waves were recorded on all threa components* The Pa show best on the vertical record, Records of Pa and Sa are clearest on earthquakes at distances exceeding 5009 They become difficult to distinguish on records of nearer quakes, The periods are variablej ranging frols 5 to 20 seconds for Pa and Card 1/2 L 3507-66 ACCESSION NRt JL05020106 8 to 30 seconds for S., but being chiefly 8-12 and 12-20 seconds., r5spectively. They are more intense than rpq PkT2 and other waves, The travel-time curves appear rectilinearj and the average velocities are*8.35 km/aec for P. and 4s5 km/Bec for 3.6 These data indicate a layer of lower velocity In the upper mantle of the earth. Title : Interoceptive influences from the stomach and the small intestines on diaphragm functions, thoracic respiratory musculature and blood pressure Periodical : Fiziol. zhur. 40, 332-337, May/Jun 1954 Abstract : Results of study of respiratory movements of the thorax and of blood pressure In experimental dogs led to the solution of some aspects of reflex relationship between the diaphragm and the digestive tract, the respiratory apparatus, and the cardiovascular system. Intero- ceptive influences, emanating from the stomach and small intestines, cause substantial changes 'in the diaphragm functions, its tonus, and a;aplitude of its movements. This is due to the fact that both the topographic anatomy and the function of diaphragm movements are closely related to the respiratory apparatus, the cardiovascular system, and the digestive organs. Diaphragm function reflex changes are in opposite relationship with reflex shifts in the function of the thoracic respiratory musculp-ture, irrespective of the diaphragm's qualitative reaction to interoceptive influences emanating from the stomach and small intestines. TITLE: On the Calculation of Small Horizontal Settling Tanks for Water Taken From Canals, Rivers, and Ponds (0 raschete gorizon- tal I nykh otstoynikov malykh razmerov pri zabore vody iz ,kanalov, rek i prudov) PERIODICAL: Sb- tr. Novocherkas. inzh.-melior. in-ta, 1955, Vol 5, pp 89-96 ABSTRACT; Engineering cost analyses have led the author to the conclu- sion that for small consumers of water (70-200 M3/day) hori- zontal settling tanks, in conjunction with slow filters, consti- tute the most sensible device for clearing water obtained from canals for agricultural purposes. The results of laboratory investigations on the effects of various modes of inflow and outflow of water in the settling tank are adduced. The author examines the basic calculation formula for horizontal settling tanks comprising the correction factor introduced by Turchi- novich (Turchinovich, V. T - , Uluchaheniye kachestva vody. Card 1/2 S,t royizdat, 1940) and proposes the following relationship for 124- 57- 1- 538 On the Calculation of Small Horizontal (cont.) a coefficient that is to account for the nonuniformity of the velocities in the settling tank: 06 = a v where a is a variable empirical coefficient, the magnitude of which is ad- duced in the paper. A numerical example is given. Bibliography: 7 references Kh. A. Navoyan l. An analytic ex- pression in the Wadati method by means of the determina- tion of the mean quadratic error makes it possible to evaluate the accuracy of the calculation of the.coordi- nates'and depths'of the foci. To W ennkthe authors chose for vestigation a Sn-Ni systco (zone- refined 99.9997% Sn nd electrolytic Ni)'Uraining up to 9% (at.) Ni. Viscosity was studied in a He atmosphere by measurii;i-the damping decrement of the torsional oscillations of a cylindrical crucible of spectrally pure graphite containing the melt. The viscosity of Sn-Ni alloys was determined in two series of measurements. In the first series the damping decrement was measured during both the hosting and the cooling of specimens. Alloys containing 0.51, 1.8, 3.0, 5.45 and 9.0% (at.) Ni were investigated, All the alloys revealed hysteresis phenomena (due to the presence of minute i purities -- oxides -- in zone-refined Sn), and in the alloys with 5.45 and UW: 669.6124-154:532.13 Card 1/3 121-74-66 ACC Wo AP6000171 9% NJ the hIyeteresis loop changed into a branched curvet which may.be attributed to the presence of a refractory structural component In the structure of the solid spe- cimens. During the second aeries, alloys containing 1.0. 1.82, 3.0, 4.0 and 9.0% (at.) NJ were investigated. The specimens were first heated to 900-LOOOIC and kept for some time at this temperature before measuring the damping decrement during cooling. The plotted isotherms of viscosity showed that viscosity increases with the .NJ content of the alloy particularly when this content is increased to 2% and the temperatures are within the 400-600*C range. It is shown that the Einstain formula fo colloidal solutions: + V (where and are the viscosities of the welt and the pure solvent, v is the total volume of the first coordination spheres of dissolved atoms, and V is the volume of the melt) may be applied to deacribing the viscosity properties of diluted metal so- lutions with strongly interacting atoms, on the ground that, in the event of a strong interaction between heterogeneous atoms to an extent exceeding the energy of thermal motion, the atoms of the solvent in the neighborhood of the atom of the dis- solved component (within the confines of the first or even the second coordination spheres) display a much smaller tmobility than in the remaining volume of the solution 2/3 1-21-74-66-- AC~ ACC NR- AP6000171 These. -findings:zay be- explained as follows:. if"hen, 'the NL-c ontent and thehesting The, tem temperature are not too high, the complexes constituted by the solute atom and the F 1 neighboring bound atoms may be considered as rigid spherical formations which are spaced so far apart that their interaction may be disregarded. Increasing the Ni content obove 2% (at) leads to such an increase in the number of complexes and such a pronounced change in the hydrodynamic conditions within the melt that the mecha- nism of viscous flow in which the structural units are atoms of the solvent (Sti) and complexes becomes inexpedient from the standpoint of energetics and is replaced by a mechanig= in which the units of flow are represented by Individual atoms of the com- ponents. This is why further addition of Ni causes a less sharp increase In melt vis-1 cosity. CrIg. art. has: 5 figures, 4 formulas.
