ABSTRACT: This was first presented at the conference of the Otdel radiatsionnoy
mikrobiologii (Radiation Microbiology Department) on May 5, 1958. In-
tensive doses of ionizing radiations will kill microbes. As M.N.
Meysell and N.D. Chernyayev have pointed out, radiation doses sufficient
to kill the vegetative forms of microbes are not bactericidal for the
spore forms. N.A. Golovkin has pointed out that the sterilizing effect
of radiation depends both on the radiation dofie and on the density and
volume of the irradiated suspension. Ye.N. Sokurova showed that the
physiological state of the cells at the time of radiation has an essen-
tial effect on the radiation-sensitivity. The most sensitive cells are
those in the logarithmic stage of growth. For the present tests, to
determine the bactericidal effects of ionizing radiations, the follatting
microbes were used: Escherichia coli, ProteuB, Staphylococcus, hay
Card 1/2 bacillus and Sarcina. Irradiation was performed in an experimental MO-2

gamma-ray unit using radioactive cobalt with a total activity of 5 kilo-
curies. The dose wan 600 r/min. The results showed that the bactericidal
action of the ionizing radiation varied directly with the concentration
of microbe bodies per mi of irradiated medium. For full sterilization of
thick (110-50 billion bodies/mi) suspensions of the microbes in the vegeta-
tive form, a dose of 400,000-600,000 r was neededl for the spore forms -
1,500,000 r. The most resistant of the microbes to X-ray radiation were
the Sarcina and hay bacillus which perished after a dose of 1,500,000 r
in a suspension of 40 billion bodies/mi. The moat sensitive was Escherichia
coli which was sterilized by a dose of 400,000 r in -Uif? name quap(inalon.
Staphylocoocud was sterilized at, 800,000 r. There are,, 4 figures and 13
references, 5 of which are Soviet and 8 English.

ABSTRACT: The article deals with the need for the planting of fruit
trees wherever possible along roads in Armenia. These
would serve both as snow-, sun- and wind-breaks and at the
same time give a valuable yield of fruit. Attention must
be paid to soil and climatic conditions of the various sec-
tions of the road in choosing suitable varieties of fruit
tree. Some examples where such planting has been carried
out in Armenia are given. The author stresses the value

Destructive Chlorination of 1,3-dichloro-2-butene, forried as a by-product of hydrochlorina-
tion of monovinylacetylene to chloroprene, was carried out in the presence of activitated
carbon at 4500C at rates of flow of chloride of 20-22 I./hr and dichlorobutene of 5.3-5.7
g/hr (20% excess chlorine) and gave an average of 73%, and up to 80%, theoretical yields of
products, among them about 75% hexachloroethane and tM rest Carbon tetrachloride. Increase
of temperature to 600 0 probably would raise the yield of carboi% totrAchloride.
