machinery consisting of 214 excavators, 262 scrapers and bulldozezs
264 tower cranes and a number of lorry-mountea cranes and loaders.
Furthermore it acquired 3000 medium building machines and 7000 units

TITLE. Investigation of D-12 Wind Electric Stations Operating Under Wind
Conditions in Caspian Littoral Area (losledovanlye VES D-12, rabotayushchikh
v usloviyakh vetrovogo rezhima Prikaspiyokoy zony)
PERIODICAL: Tr. Energ. in-ta AN AzerbSSR, 1956, Nr 13, pp 141-155
ABSTRACT: In 1949, at the Sangachaly and Yashma railroad otationo, two D-12
wind electric stations were built to supply light for the stations and adjacent
villages. At Singachaly, a 141.0-v DC generator and a 60--cell 400 a-h storage
battery are installed. At Yashma, the D-12 drives an A0 generator without a
standby thermal motor. Five-year operating experience with these stations
has shown that D-12 3-blade motors, at variance with TV-5 and TV-8 inidti-
blade motors, are entirely suitablq for operation under the heavy wind condi-
tions in the Caspian littoral area. In 1953, the Yashma station was out of ser-
vice only 19 days because of lack of wind; the rest of the time, it supplied

consumers without interruption. Methods of investigating the D-12 are set
forth and measuring instruments are described, including an anerriameter, a
torque meter, and tachometer with electric pickups, tin aniplifier, and MPO-2
oscillograph. Special attention Is paid to results of investigating D-12 behavior
during transient c9nditions that c4used varipus breakdowns. Os c illogr aphic ally
determined were: (1) propeller rotition irregularity, (2) time of windmiU
acceleration and dfceleration, (3) utilization factor of wind energy. Data and
functional relatioaships are supplied f"or plotting aerodynamic and operating
characteristics of the D-12 windmill. On the bael's of long-time observations
of the Sangachaly and Yashma stations, sorn~ construction4l imperfections of
various subassemblies have been discovered', mainly the stabilizer regulation
syetem, in the joints between the swiveling parts of vanes with the arms and
between the arms and the hub, and also in the lubricating system.

greater vaporation from the surface defects of the wafer than from. its
interior explained the higher concentration of acceptors on the surfac4.~ of
the annealed specimens. The Cu and Mg impurity atoms which were detecLed
in the InSb wafers were separated from the surface defects by annealln,
and contributed to an additional accumulation of acceptors near the surface.
The p-n-p junction was formed in the InSb wafers by annealing at 480C and
-by subsequent Zn diffusion or vice versa. This was due to the chemical
reaction below the diffusion layer between Zn atoms and the impurity atoms
which wara-separated by annealing from the structure defecto in the bulk of
the wafer and which woro diffutiod to the surface,.- 0eijt,--arts__hA8" .2 figures.

An experimental tray column for the continuous vacuum refining of
metals, and Sn in particular, was constructed and tested in operation. The con-
tinuous feed of metal to the column is carried out by a pipeline fabricated from
a seamless steel pipe 8 min dia, heated by a nichrome spiral ensuring a temperature
of 300 - 3500C for the metal in the pipe, at an electric power expenditure of
600 - 700 watts. Starting with crude Sn containing 0.2% Pb and 0.037% Di, the
Sn content was lowered down to 0.03% and that of BI to 0.008~6f by a distillation
for two hours at a residual preoaure of 0.15 - 0.2 min of mercury. An increase
of the residual pressure from 0.08 to 0.25 min of' mor(.,ur7 requiren ui Incroatic, of
the distillation time by a factor of about two in order to obtain an equivalent
degree of impurity~elimination. Changing the height of the melting layer from

tent of 0.55 - 0.72% Pb in the Sn and 0.25 - 0.3% Bi, constitutes 52 - 96 kg Sn
of mark 0.2. In distilling Zn from Pb-Zn melt, Pb containing 0.46% Zn was used.
At 6800C and a residual pressure of 0.3 mm of mercury the Zn content was lowered
down to 0.05% in three minutes, and -the daily (211 hr) productivity of the column
was 3,450 kg. The formation of a partially solid condensate roquires the Intro-

bility of a continuous output of condensate from the column in order-to realize
a completely uninterrupted process.

ABSTRACT: The authors investigated the vacuum refining of selenium
in a continuous fractional column equipped with screens. The vacuum'
extraction of selenium was based on the considerable difference which
exists in the pressures of selenium, selenide, metal and impurity
vapors. A great amount of contradictory data on solone-sulfur com-
ounds have been made available in literature. Chizhikov et al

havo ahown oxperimontallK that sulfur-solonium cannot be fully
.separated. In view of t o difficulties involved in the separatiorl
of selenium and mercury, the authors investigated the vapor pressurel
of mercury selenide within the 350-450C rangG which proved,to be
lower than that of elementary selenium. The purest selenium was
obtained at a condensation temperature of 240-270C. The effects of
temperature, feed rate and residual pressure were analyzed. The
authors found that an increase in temperatures between 370 to 430C
is accompanied by a productivity increase from 5 to 50 dmin. The
ratio of refined metal to the mother liquor depends on temperatures
and feed rate, and this may be readily predetermined. Residual
pressure was found to affect the process considerably. An increase
of up to 1 mm Hg at 430C increases the yield of the overflow from 22
to 70.9%. Quality tests showed that the selenium had a lower-content.;
of impurities as temperatures were decreased and vapor and selenium
counterflow introduced into the process., A study of the distribution;
of impurities showed thAt-the fractions of the two center screons

Experimental Cancer.

Abstract The mice were smeared with coal-tar three times a week
and received 0.4 mg lead acetate q.d. through a gastric
tube. Lead poisoning developed after 2 months. Cancer
became established in 64 of 98 experimental mice after
6 months and in 40 of 96 control animals after 6 months
and 20 days.

for study was no more than 2%. The solid angles for these cases were measured and
the absolute cross sections ware determined. Tables are given showing the cross

In calculation of these cross sections due to necessary corrections for pion-pion
and pion-neutron scattering in the ambient medium, electronic efficiency, beam com-
2osition and the shielding affect of nucleons in the deuterium was 25%. Data for
0n and as functions of energy show some Irregularity in the 2-3 bev region
which may be due to resonance. Measurements of angular distribution for pion-neu-
tron scattering show a minimum in the 162-1800 region. The mcm6ntun tranafer func-
ticn is used as a basis for calculating the width of this minimum. A comparison of
the experimental data obtained inthis paper with those in the literature shows
that the cross section doldil is appmisately Inversely proportional to energy when
the momentum transfer is constant. OrIg. art. hass 4 figures, 2 tables.

ABSTRACT: The author describes and illustrates the new
system of fastening the leads conducting the
current from -the rotor's rinas, to the exci-
