not only in 'a. workshop but also under fleld conditions. There is one

TEXT: For the production of steel by t 'he basic open-hearth process, whose
properties are not below those of acid steel, 10 experimental heats of grade
40 XH (4oKhN) steel were produced in a basic open-hearth furnace by the follow-
Ing variants: A.-The heats were produced In a 40-ton acid mazout furnace, operat-
ing on a solid charge by an "active" procesa without deoxidation of Al. After
completed active bubbling 25.k9 cast iron per 1 ton of steel were added to the
pool for overboiling. Subsequently Fe-Cr, Fe-Mn and blast furnace He-Si were
added. B. The heats were conducted in a basic 8o-ton open hearth furnace operat-
ing on a solid charge. Preliminary deoxidizing was conducted with Fe-Mn and

blast furnace Fe-Si, subsequently Fe-Cr was added. Final deoxidation was per-
formed in the ladle with 45% Fe-Si and Al in a quantity of 300 g/ton of steel.
C. Smelting conditions were analogous to those of variant B, except deoxidation:
prior to preliminary deoxidation a mixturewas added to the slag which consisted
of 50% crushed coke and 50% Si-Ca, in a quantity of 150 k9 per heat. Five
minutes later SI-Mn and blast turnace Fe-Si are added, and 100 kg deoxidizing
mixture and blast-furnace.Fe-Si were again introduced. D. The heats were con-
ducted in a basic 40-ton furnace according to a technique used at the plant, ex-
cept final deoxidation which was conducted in the ladle with 4.4 kg Si-Ca per 1
ton of steel. The investigations have shown that in melting 40HW4 grade steel
with full deoxidation in the furnace by blast furnace Fe-Si only or with full
deoxidation in the ladle by Si-Ca instead of Al, a metal is obtained whose
mechanical properties approach those of an acid metal. Deoxidation with blast
furnace Fe-Si only in amounts of 4.5 - 5.0% of the heat weight and deoxidation
by Si-Ca instead of Al in an amount of 4.4 kg/t of steel assure full deoxidation
of the steel. An analysis of gases has shown that steel deoxidized with blast-
furnace Fe-Si and Si-Ca approaches acid steel in respect to the 0 content. Least
N content is obtained in steel deoxidized by blast-furnace Fe-Si. In deoxidation

by blast-furnace Fe-Si and Si-Ca the amount of non-metallic impurities and the Al
content in their composition are considerably reduced. This explains apparently
the increase in the mechanical properties of steel melted by the aforementioned
variants.
