The size Gf the silver particles should be 2-3,u, this particle size comprising not less than 85% of the total amount of powder. The electrolysis was carried out in a 250 ml round glass container using 99.9 % silver anodes and a polished stainless sierl cathode. The anode to cathode surface ratio was 3-5 : 1. The authors ipvcstigated the influence Of the concentration and, cathodic current on the physical properties of the powders. The three methods studied are the Yench method, the '7drop," methodNand.a. method developed by the 8_eie_ntifi_c_R_e- scarch-Institute of the Civil Air Fleet. The Yench method is characterized by the fact thatautoignition temperature is determined at a constant oil-to-air ratio without thenecessity.for considering, oil type. A description is given for the apparatus used in the Yench method. This equipment consists of an electric furnace with an ignition crucible in the form of alarge metallic cylinder with four chambers. Three of these Card 1/3 -um 662-753.32:629.1 ool.4 ACC NRs AT6015205 chambers contain cups made from stainless steel and the fourth chamber contains a thermocouple. All chambers are connected by an air or oxygen channel. After ener- gizing the electric furnace, the oil to be tested is fed into the cups at 50 intervals Btufting-100*C belov the assumed autoignition temperature. Air in oimultivneously in,troducedat a rate of 10.0 cm3/mjn and the-point of ignition is recorded. The 1OWCE;t temperature at whieb ignition takes place is assumed to be the autoignition point. The experiment is repeated several times to ensure accuracy. The "drop: method is characterized by the fact that the quentity of~oil has to be considered before the experiment. This is.done by starting with an oil-air mixture vith the lowest auto- ignition temperature.for the given oils The apparatus used for this method consists ofa quartz.beakerjocated in a slotted electric furnace made from cast steel with a ceram1c.covering and annular channels'for the heating coil. The top of the beaker has two openings, - one for introducing drops of oil and the other for a thet7nocouple. The electric furnace,is heated to 100-1560C above the expected autoignition tempera- ture and oil is introduced into the-reaction zone as the furnace is cooled. Ignition is observed through-a vertical slot."-The apparatus of the Scientific Research Insti- tute of the Civil Air Fleet consists of.-a.plate.made from stainless refractory pteel 3-4 ma thick located-on an electric plate and covered by a double jacket. The air space within the double, jacket sets as insulation. This method provides simultaneous measurements-of the gas phase'temperature at a given distance from the plate by using a thermometer, and the metal plate temperature by using a thermocouple. The metal plate is heated to 20-500C above the expected autoignition temperature and cooled as Ccrd_~ 2/3 -A YPC NRII 15205. cml~ 0.2 Aos ea of oil are added at 50 Intervals through a special opening, The auto- ignition point lz~established as the 50 interval uhich does not produce autoignition. The problem on the concentration of spodumene ores was solved (by Mekhanobr and the Irkutsk Giredmet). Giredmet proposed a number of methods for treatment o~ Zr ores and a method for productiori of metallic Sr. At the Metallurgical Institute, Academy of Sciences, USSR, methods for extracting Ge from coal ashes were de veloped. The conference noted that the state of the methods for extraction of rare metals from raw materials, especially the technological processes of comple-, ox- traction of rare and disversed elements are inadequate for the ciirrent -c(II-111 ~.- ments of the national economy. A serious impediment in the evaluation of ilie new methods of rare-metal extraction is the complete failure of industrial pilot - plant testing to keep pace with laboratory investigation. Too little attention is paid to t-he economics of the extraction of rare metals. A proposition was adv.nced for the creation of a special periodical on rare.metals. V. N.
