In the first chapter the author gives a method for the construction of upper
emd lower approximations tor the solution of a linear differential equation
of fourth order with variable coefficients and given initial conlitionso The
monotone convergence of these approximations to the solution and those of
their derivatives to the corresponding dqrivatives of the solution of the
given equation - if the function of S.A.daplygin is assumed as initial approxi-
mation - is proved. In the second chapter the obtained sequences of the upper
imd lower approximctione are used for the construction of monotoaely converging
i3equenoes of the upper and lower approximations for the eigenvalues of the
