The simultaneous measurement of the spectral-line profiles of
neutral atoms and ions provides Interesting information about
the effect of the moving ionz on the neutral atoms; The optical
method appears to be the only'possible method for studyiag the
notion of the two types of particles separately., Deterr,11nation
of the temperature from the Doppler profile may lead to
incorrect results if tlie directed motion is not taken into
account., The success of these applications of the Dopplor efrect
to the stjidy of directed motion in plasina will depend on the
