The Bending of a Homogeneous Layer Under the Action of Its Own Weight
and five points, and with the restraint applied variously to different horizontal or
vertical layer elements and to different combinations thereof). Used in these cal-
culations are the homogeneous solutions determined by the first two roots of the
equation sin z = z. The author comes to the significant conclusion that there is no
justification for adding a small number of homogeneous solutionq to pi!rmlt fulfill-
ment of the boundary conditions at each point, because, then restraint occurs at
more than one point, at most of the additional points along the line of restraint the
displacements are thereby made to increase. We are compelled to observe that it
does not follow at all from this paper that the homogeneous- solution method for
fulfilling more precisely the boundary conditions is altogether valueless. When a
large number of points is used (with a corresponding number of adorted horno-
gencous functions), as is done in a paper by G. A. Grinberg and R. P. Poplavskiy
(RZhMekh, 1954, abstract 5283), or when the conditions of restraint are formu-
lated differently, as in a paper co-authored by D. Ya. German and the reviewer
(RZhMekh, 1956, abstract 3074), completely satisfactory results can be obtained.

TITLE: On the Theory of Vibrating Machinery (K teorii vibratsicnnykh
mashin)

ABSTRACT: The motions of a model of a vibrating machine intended for the
conveyance and grading of materials are studied. The machine
consists of two parallel frames the lower of which is mounted an
four shock absorbers and is connected to the top frame by means
of flat springs. The two frames together form an ela:itic parallelo-
gram, The vibration-exciter mechanism consists of a motor with
an unbatanced load mounted on the lower frame. The pre-resonance
as well as the post-resonance behavior of the system is studicd.
The problem is reduced to the integration of a system of differential
linear equations with variable coefficients performed by the small-
parameter method. The results obtained perrrLit a deter-nination of
the natural frequencies of vibrations and the resonance conditions of

Abstract The necessity of using hybrid seed in all vegetable
crops is pointed out. On the basis of many years of ex-
periments in the Gribov Testing Station for the US.IIR
Chernozem Belt the following pairs of tomatoes are recom-
mended for crossbreeding: Planovyy X XErliana, Planovyy
X patriot, Shtambovy Alpatlyeva X Bizon and others.
The yield of F, is 3()%-50% higher than that Iii either of
the parents at their best. Cabbage: BraunshveygsImya X
Amger, Gribovskaya 147 X Vallvatlyevka and others.

On the basis of the theory of inductive coupling of circuits, the author
studies transformer substitution circuits and parameters of' ignitron-
type electric locomotives. Two cases are considereds firEt, where the
magnetining current of the transformer is taken Into accountp and second,
where it is ignored. The author presents some simplified cirevits and
shows that they can be used for several cases of approximate s~,lutions.

supply distortion-producing installations and devices. As a basis for his
studyq he uses the method of harmonic analysis and the reaLLIts of an inves-
tigation of mercury-arc rectifiers by means of harmonic oscillators.
