PERIODICAL: Tr. Kishinevsk. s, -kh. in-t, 1957, Vol 15, pp 75-82
ABSTRACT: In solving the problem of the simple flexure of a rectangular-
section rod the author proposes taking into account the dimensional
changes in the surfaces over which the stresses act and setting up
equations of equilibrium for the strain distribution in an elemental
unit. Large deformations are examined in this fashion. In this
case it would be necessary, as is well known, to take into account
the nonlinear terms in the expression for Hooke' s law and the
changes in the transverse dimensions of the rod --- which the author
does rot do, Unless allowance is made for these factors the theory
remaini5 without practical significance.

ABSTRACT: The book was reviewed in Teploenergetika Nr 11, 1958.
This ntmber contains two brief discussions as follows.
Engineer A.M. Zalltsman, p 92. The book deals with a
number of current problems but the reviewer does not tell
the reader enough about its contents and the main ideas
of the author. Various recommendations are made to
improve the book; in particular, Chapter 2 should be
enlarged. There are numerous misprints but these and
the other faults do not detract from the major
Card 1/2 achievement of the work.

PURPOSE: This book is intended for physiologists, pathophysiologists and biolo-
gists, and also for specialists in diving and caisoon work.
COVERAGE: The book describes the manifol4 processes taking place in the
human organism under high pressure of oxygen, air, and artificial gaseous
mixtures. Various types of physiological effects from high-gaseous -medium

pressuT-es are analyzed in the light of the present-day understanding of irri-
tants, irritant processes, and attendant physiological and pathological reac-
tions. The author' s treatment includes a !ipecial investigation of the onset
of the toxic effect on the human organism from the gas pressures used, and
considers the physiologically optimum gaseous mixtures for increasing work
efficiency. Methodical examples have been developed which make it possible
to characterize nervotis processes rEinging from elementary unconditioned
reactions to complex cortical reactions. The author thanks the following for
their help in working out experimental methods and in carrying out the
actual experimental work, and for their coltributions to individual sections
of the book: Professor N. N. Traugott, 1. D. Zinov' yeva, and B. A. Nes-

It was found that in the initial stage of hyperoxia, high voltage dis-
charges appear on the EEGR of humans and the ele ctrosubcorticograrn of
.anixnals. These shifts are compensated in this stage and do not affect be-
havioral and sympathetic reactions, which show adaptive changes only.
In the final stage of high pressure oxygen breathing the precursor
;period whole groups of subcortical. and cortical structures are recruited
'into the process, and dysfunctions of the motor, cardiovascular, respira-
tory, and other systems ofthe organism simultaneously appear.
This precursor stage is followed by the onset of chronic convulsions
due to profound disturbance of the normal processes of cerebral regula-
tion, and the appearance in all structures of epileptold pathological
rhythms. [W.As No@ 22; ATD Fleport 66-U61

ABSTRACT: VAD23 alloy belongs to alloys of the Xr Cu-;Li system with muLu admixtures
of 11h, and Cd. Because of -the loss of lithium from the melt during the preparation of
this alloy, the Introduction of lithium (and cadmium) was carkied out tinder a special
flux consisting of a eutectic mbcturo of lithium and potassium chloridos. This flux
wan found to prevent the IDas of lithium to a considerable extent; howover, as the
lithium content of the alloy increasesthis protection becomes less effective. Partic-
ular attention must be paid to the quality of preparation of the flux aXA to the manner
in which lithium is introduced into the melt (without disturbing the flux). The flux
has the disadvantage of being hygroscopic because of the LM present In its composiT_.
tionp and therefore must bs used only In the liquid or freshly-remelted stato, the

ABSTRACT: In elaborating a process for casting ingots from VAD23 alloy by the contin-
uous method, the authora studied the casting properties (tendency to form hot and cold
cracks) of this alloy,, octablished the temperature conditions of the casting, and de-
termined the methods of protecting the zotal during transit from tbe mixer to the crys-
tallizor and in the cryatallizor. The chemical activity of lithiump iwhioh ontors into
the composition of the 40loy, made it necessary to protect the alloy surface during
transit. Two methodaeore tested for this purposop involving thopo of (1) sulfur di-
oxide and (2) a flux1consisting of a outectic mixture of UtJ11un~Mnd potassium chlor-
ides. Only the latter ziethod gave satisfactory results. A temperatwe of 700-730*C
was found to be optimalTor casting, The quality of the ingots obtaiitied was thoroughly
