TITLE: Barite Concretions in the Kiyevkiy Marls of the Donbass Basin

ABSTRACT: As far as the author knows, the concretions named in the title
have been neither described nor mentioned. After P. I.
Lutakiy and M. Ya. Blank (Trust "Lugiiiiaktigl~i)goolovlyct") had
drawn the author's attention to c~)ncretions in the Sukhodol
ravine, he collected these concretions there and in other
ravines on the steep right bank of the Severnyy (northern)
Donets River, not far from the town of Popovka and 40-45 km
southeast of the oity of Lliganak. They ocour within a mans
of howogeneoua marl with an apparent thioknEIL33 of 25-27 m,
in two horizonst a. A lower horizon, about 2.5-3 m thick.
The chief concentration of the concretions 16 found 20-23 m
from the top of the marl bed. b. The second horizon
(1-5-2 m) contains fewer concretionsl the concretions lie
12-13 m from the top of the marl. They are spherical or
Card 1/3 ellipsoidal and generally somewhat flattened (Fig 1). Other

forms rarely occur. The surface of the concretion is even
and smooth, and the transition to the host rock is sharp.
Their 8izo is 2-3 to 11)-20 cm. The longitudinal axes lie
horizontal. The concrotions are light grean to light blue
on fractured surfaces and are composed of a chalky substance
of high density and hardness. Radial contraction cracks,
which frequently wedge out toward the periphery (Fig 3) and
whose thin parts are completely filled with colorleso, clear
barite, occur within the concretions. Wider parts of the
cracks, as well ae 9mall, central cavitlea, have a covering
of fine barite crystals on the walls. Further details of
the structure axe described. Table 1 shows the chemical com-
position. Spectro-analyais of the host marl has shown that
the maxima of barium content t,,oincides with the concretion
containing horizons. The concretions may be the result of a
redistribution of barium. The comDressed form indicates a
colloidal condition of the initial material. Everything points
to a medium rich in water; i.c-. to the early diagenetic nature
of the concretions. Since barium enters sediments as a

place during diagenesis only as a bicarbonate. This occurred
at definite points and formed the concretions. Barite itself
formed ever later, during late diagenesis or perhaps
epigenesis. This is shown by the small crystals in cracks of
the concretions. The lbi-uvid development of concretion forma-
tion contradicts the assertion that the Kieyevekiy marl
suffered relatively weak diagenesis (Ref 14). There are 3
figures and 17 references, 15 of which are Soviet.

ABSTRACTs The fact of the existence of concretions as such proves the in-
equal distribution of the substance in sedimentary rocks. The com-
parative investigation carried out by the author of the chemical
composition of the concretions and the rocks contained therein in
the productive sediments in the Donets basin ahowa that all ele-
mentp forming part of the concretion-forming minerals, occur in
increased concentrations in the concretions and thus take part
in the diagenetic'flows of material. in this connection it would

ABSTRACT: The author has s~udieq concretions from cliff erent facies
in the series C20, C20, and C2 6 in the wastern region of
the Donets Basin. Most of the concretions occur in
clays and silty clays. The concretions are separated
into three groups on the basis of form, conditions of
formation, and position in the section of the cycle of
sediment accumulation. Concretions developing in the
Card 1/3 roof rocks of coal beds are placed in group I. Con-

group N. The fifth type is calcitic, the sixth ankeritic, and the
seventh contains drusy siderite. The eighth type provisionally
includes segregated carbonate-sulfide concretions, with the FeS2
content ranging from 30 to 70 percent. The remaining three types
form group III. The nodules in the floor rocks of the coal beds.,
consisting chief 1y of f erruginous carbonate, nake up the ninth type.
The tenth and eleventh types ctiaracterize the concretions in the
sub-floor rocks of the coal beds. The septarian development in
fractures and cavities of the concretions Is of later, diagenetic,
mineral development, and represented by calcite, ankerite, barite,
quartz, chalcedony, caolinite, pyrite, galena, sphalerite, and the
formation of different combinations of these.

ABSTRACT: Septarian concretions are widely spread among the concretional form
m4tions of the Donets Carboniferous. Morphologically they are hard
to distinguish from fissure-loss concretions and from secondary mi-
nerals. It is only sometimes that they may be externally recognized.
This concerns those septaria whose fissures do not thin out, but ad-
vance to the periphery and form a surface drawing similar to that of
the turtle shell. The expansion and the thickness of the contraction
fissures in general depends on the size of the concretions. The mi-
neral nam-formations in the septaria mostly completaly fill these
fissures. Yawing fissures occur seldom more. In this case their walls
are filled by crystals with well-formed facets, The morphology of the
secondary minerals in its totality dependent on their order of forma-
tion and on the shape of the space in which they grow.. The fissures
of the septaria form on compression and bursting of the colloidal.

were deposited simultaneously with barite. On)~r in the zane of

cold water may be assumed for them and for the minerals in pa-rage-
nesis with them. In this respect the author agrees with Lazarenko and
Furman which proved svch an origin of the sulfide, carbonate and
other secondary minerals of the concretions in Vodol-tc phosphorites.

others (concretions of the Vorkata suite) are considered as late-
diagenetic formations; by Makedonov. In the course of the diagenesL%
a regrouping of the substances (Cu. Fb, Zn) and a transition from a
uniform dispersion to a concentration to individual points takes
place. Siderite and the minerals of the isomorphous series siderite-P
magnesite are completely absent among the secondary carbonates. The
absence of iron carbonates, as secondary minerals, beside or instead
of calcite indicates a later formation of the latter. An energetic
iron-carbonate migration only takes place in an earlier period of the
diagenesis. The late-diagenetic minerals form after the intensive
decomoosition of the organic substance in the deposit. Bat the mi-
