In several foreign countries, slag portland
cement with an addition of blast furnace slag of
14 to 70% is used for paving roads and airfields.
In the USSR, the State Standard GOST 970-41 spe-
cifies the use of 20 to 85~ of slag in concrete
mixtures. Pure clinker with 15 to 30% granulated
blast furnace slag is here investigated. The
clinker was ground to a specific surface of
41240 CD121g the slag to 3v750, 6,000 and 8,000
CM2/g. The'concrete samplos were saturated with
water arid then cooled to -15 to -20 0. Afti-r
this, they were thawed in Nvater of 10 to 17 C.

Slag Portland Cement for the Concrete Pavements of Roads and
Airfields
The test; resUlts (Pioure 1) show that -the re-
sistance increases with the specific surfaced of
the cement and the slag. The resistance to com-
pression and bending is, during the first seven
days, 10-20% lower than that of pure clinker with-
out slag, but after 28 days it is 10% higher. If
thespecific.surface of the slag is,increased from
3,750 to 8,000 cm2/g the resistance'is higher al-
ready in the first seven days. Concrete with slag
of 6,000 cm4/g and an air-attr'acting addition is,
after 700-800 cycles of freezing and thawing, more
froat resintant than pure olinker.
