ABSTRACT: The linear theoxy of transient -)lectro-magnetio phenomena which occur within magnetic materials under the action of periodic, and aperiodic magnetic fields was considered in detail in Refs.(l) to .(4). However# this theory does not yield;sufficient information in the case where the magneti- sation curve of the material is nonlinear. A solution of thia problem has only been-given in special cases, f6i ex- amplet V.K.Arkadlev (Reff.5) considered the solution of the problem of penetration of a plane magnetic wave into the body of a ferro-magnetic space in the case of sudden changes of.the intensity of.the external magnetic field, assuming that the magn6tisation. curve has a Z-form. A similar prob- lem was considered by L'.R. Neiman. (Ref'.,6) who considered another special form.of the magnetisation curve (incliLed Card 1/4 1!6-1-5/40 On the Non-Linear Theoxy-0- T;rappient-Phenomena.in a Ferro-Magnetic Plate Magnetised by a Longitudinal Variable Field. straight line), In'the present work a calculation of trans- Jent eleotro-magnetio phenomena is given in the case of a plane-parallel plate infinitely long and wide and consisting of a substance with a constant specific electrical conducti- vity,:T , and a small nonlinearity in the magnetisation curve. The feasibility of this r4agnetization and the detection of superficial flaws 0.2--0.3 mm deep is demon- strated. U"hen inspecting products (particaarly*ferromagnetic) by the eddy current method a great deal of noise Is imposed on'the useful signal. This noise comes from structural and magnetic discontinuities, varying diameter of the article, etc. The signals Zrom discontinuities (the background r.oise) often exceed the useful siznal level. Interfering signal level may be reduced by superimposed magnetization of the . oducts by constant magnetic field of strength R . The present article studies the pr CcIrd 1/2 UDC: 620.1.79 ---------- - -- ACC NR: AP6035098 efficiency of this method of reducing noise. With medium and high values of H- the magnetic permeability by volume of material to be inspected is equalized and becomes more uniform. With H2120-150 Oe the permeability'curve of ShKhl5 steel coincides with that of heavily cold-worked material; hence the signals from fluctuations in magnetic pe=eability of the material are now insignificant in comparison with the signals from actual flaws. The intensity of this optimum field H.Opt depends both o the magnetic properties of the material inspec ted and the frequency of the variable magneti,c'field imposed. The lay-out of the experimental equipment is illustrated in a diagram. Extensive atmospheric showers caused by primary particles with an energy of from 2.1013_1016 eV were separated by fourfold discharges in two groups 6f counters (wish a mutual diatance of two motern). A numbor of abolit 4-10 extensive atmospheric showers were recorded, A grant number of oountors wau employed in these Card 1/4 measurements. Tito energy spectrum of the myons at a distance of Extaneivo Atmospheric Showero of ConTflo Radiation from the nhowor ax-io not oxcooding 10 m can be expraoued In tho form ^.f JIF,01 in tho onorgy interval of the myono of from E - 1,5 - 3,5 BOV. Here holds m w 0027 ;t 0,06.The authoro report on the oboervatione of the passage of shower cores .through a detoctor for ponotrating particles wiloh wan mount- ad at a depth of a water equivalent of 000 glom-. Tile com- puted shlower fElte caused by primary particles with anenergy of B < 6.10 4 eV completely agrees with the observed rate, 0 whereas the ob rved shower rate caused by primary particles with E > 6 .1M ev is several times as high a .a the expected rate. The.spectrum of the electron-photon component in the core parts of the here observed atmospheric, showers was in- vestigated by means of a great cloud chamber, that is to say for energies of from 2.108 - 1010 eV at a varying distance from the shower a.xis. The experimentally determined spectra of the electron-pboton component at distances up to 4 m from the shower axis showed a decrease of,eloctrone and photons with high energies , contratry to predictions of cas- cade theory. 'Th'is.only holds, if the energy of the neutral pions responsible. for the generation of the electron-photon component is set equal to 1012 eV. This contradiction between Card 2/4 experiment and theorycan be 1. removed, if an essential in-a 20-118-3-14/59 Invoctigation of Extonaivn~Atmoophorio Showors of Cosmic Radiation fluence of the neutral pions with energies above 10 10 iff on the electron-photon component of the chower Is assumed. Filters of various thickness of different materials were mounted above the-ionization chambers. This permitted to measure the energy flow, which is carAed by the electron-pho- ton component of the shower at varioun distances from the shower axis and also the determination of the energy of the nuclear-aative shower particles. The energy of the particle with the highest energy in the, r of the extensive atmos- pheria showers with less than particles amounts to 10 in the mean of the energy of the electron-photon component of the shower at.the observation altitude. Trudy* v.* 2, Shirokiye atmoefernyye livnI i kae- kadnyye protsessyt.47- 55 TEXT: The results are given of measurements carried out in the autumn of 1957 at the Pamir Mountain (3860.m).-Tho apparatus con- sisted of 10 light detectors and 9 hodoscope units with Geiger counters. Two types of light detectors were ueod for the measure- monta. Both types incorporated photomultipliere BC-4 (BS-1) or(P,4y- 2~1 (PEU-24). The apparatu6 Included 6 dateotore of the second type (with mirror). A special electronic circuit permitted meanuring tho magnitude of the light flares in all the detectors. After process- ing the data,,it was possible to determine for each shower: 1) The Card 31520 S/627/60/002/000/002/027 Cherenkov radiation of D299/D304 intensity of.the light flux at 5points; 2) the density c~f the par- ticle flow at 9 observation points and hence the position of the showeraxis and the total number of particles; 3) the direation of the chower.-Various showers were analyzed, with number of par- ticleB ranging from 2.104 to 1.3-107. The dependence of the inten- sity of the Cherenkov light on the distance from the shower axis was obtained for showers with number of particles N ranging from 4 7 2 10 to 2.10 at,intervalo of 10 to 250 m. from the axis, and va- rious angles of incidence of the showers. Assuming the relation- ship E = AN, Wbere E is the energy spent by the shower in the at- mosphere, one obtains for it approx. 10 ev. Oomparing the values of the light flares from showers with different number of particles, it is possible to determine the relationship between E. and N. For showers with N = 105 to H = 1.4-106 , this relationship is B--N 0.8 + + 0 05 - 0 . This fact has to be taken into consideration when passing from the number spectrum to the energy spectrum of primary par- Card 2/3 &520 3/627/ (07002/000/002/027 Cherenkov radiation of D299/11304 ticles. Figures show that the relationship between the number of particles and the intensity of the light in the shower varies as a function of the inclination of the shower$ The simultaneous mea- surement of the liglit intensity at predetermined distance from the axis, and of the total number of particles makes it possible to as- certain (in principle) the role of fluctuations in the development of showers. It was found, by comparing the fluctuations at the Pa-_-7-7_-- mir level and at sea leve1(according to measurements carried out in 1959 at Moscow State University) that the fluctuations have'no significant part in explaining the altitude variation of showers.
