Abstract: Electric breakdown in a dielectric is considered as a meebanical damage
to the crystal. It is assumed that the energy a-cumullated by the
electrons in the electric field is consumed in destroying the bond
between the particles-of the lattice., and that thereby the transmis-
slon of the energy from the electrons of the lattice occurs particu-
larly vigorously in the case when the electron energy Is of the same
order of magnitude as the binding energy. Using an experimental
linear relationship between the electric strength of the crystals of
alkali-baloid s energies of the lattice, the author has

ABSTRACT: Conductance a, tangent of the dielec ic loss angle tan 6, and specific
inductive capacitance c of Ca~2 sinsle cry IW6 irradiated from a Co6o source
and nonirradiated have been investigated. Ile absorbed ilrradiation dose was
1.66-1013 rad. Conductance a was measured by means of a ct-c amplifier with an elec-
tric field intensity of 500 v/cm. Accuracy of a measurenents was 20%. Tan 6 and c
were measured by means of an unbalanced bridge in the 100-20,000 cps frequency
range. Measurement accuracy was 20% for the tangent of the dielectric loss angle an4
0.32 for specific inductive capacitance. Specimen capacitance was within 7 to 12 pf.!
The specimens vere 0.8-1.1 mm thizk. Platinum electrodea were deposited by cathode_
spraying in a vacuum. The same specimens-were used for mg!aauriag a, tg 6 and C.

Measurements were taken in a vacuum (8-5)~10:4 jam Hg at temperatures ranging from
20 to 450C. Curves of the dependence of conduct!#nce an temperature show discontinu-;
ity in the range 90-130C. For irradi3ted crystfils conductance increases up to the
discontinuity point, beyond which conductance ia equal to that of nonirradiated
crystals. Curves for the dependence of tan 6 on 4' teuperature show regions both of
conductance and relaxation losses. E increases slightly and almost linearly with an
increase in temperature. It was also noted that preliminary irradiation results fn
a decrease both of tan 6 and s, and in an increase in 6nductance. Orig. art. has:
