ABSTRACT: Laboratory models of shaft furnaces are used for experiments on the
remelting of sinter similar in composition to the industrial sinter of
oxidized Ni ores. The results of heats obtained in furnaces having an
0. 01 m?- cross-sectional area in the vicinity of the tuy~res are quite
similar to those obtained in shops; this makes possible investigation
of theoretical and practical questions of shaft-furnace melting in the

of the furnace is~lined with a heat resistant mass consisting

is of great interest in this connection The first expariments

The Lining of Canals. With Concrete and Reinforced Concrete
(Oblitsovka kanalov botonom i zhelezobetonom)
Gidrotekhnika i Melioratsiya, 19589 Nr 6, pp 7-20 (USSR)
In the Trans-Cau-casian Soviet Republics (Azerbaydzhan, Arme-
nian and Georgian SSR), several tests have been carried out
on the concreting of irrigation canals. The North Donets-
Donbass Canal in the Ukrainian.SSR is now being lined with
reinforced concrete. Considering the various conditions of
irrigation systems and the peculiarities of prefabricated
canal lining structures (eapocially the extent of fionmq, tho
groat domand for fitting otooll incronned otabilityt eto) the
conatruotion of linings of monolithic and reinforced concrete
proved to be the best solution for concreting main canals. The
type of canal lining used in the main canal of the Apsheron
irrigation system, having longitudinal seams sealed with tar-
coated planks, did not prove to be as reliable as the anti-
filter type construction. The construction of marker-type
linings (Arzni-Shamiram irrigation system), without.longitu-

dinal seams And reliable sealings of all diametrical sqOms'
is a now development which has not yet been sufficient;y
tested. In the Upper Samgori irrigation-system --studifed in
-1956-57 __ by--scie.itists-of--the-deorgian Water Engineering and
Reclamation Institute, single-layer concrete linings ~type 4)
proved to be excellent for water-resistant soils while double-
layer linings (type 2, 3P 3a) were found to be excellent for
non-water-resistant soils subject to detormations. The con-
atruction of linings in the North Donets-Donbass Canal is
characterized by an innovation - the sealing of the seams
with rubber, and especially the use of profile rubber in mo-
nolithic linings. In order to apply labor-saving measures in
the future construction of monolithic linings, and to improve
their structure, it is absolutely necessary to build machines
for complex mechanization of the process of lining with mono-
lithic concrete and reinforced concrete. At the same time ro-
search work is -to be continued on more efficient and economical
linings made up of concrete and reinforced concrete tending
to apply pre-stressed fittings. There are 19 photos, 2 figures
and 4 tables.

ABSTRAOT: It isshown that if tables are available for the harmonic syn-

to periodic influence, it is advisable to make use of the Fourier

of the animals being immersed for 13 seconds, Sovoro'burn disease developed

study protein synthesis, employing 3-1'-1'_moth!.onino and 0 -glycino as protein
precursors. Radioactive aminoacids were administered subcutaneously at the
-rate of 10,000 pulsos/minute per gram of bodywoight on the 2nd. 4th, 6th.

ABSTRACT: An investigation was made of the Si qsorption spectrum in th.e range of
wavelengths from I to 25 v before and after Irradiation with neutrons. A polished
p-type Gi specimen 2.13 = thick with a specific resistance of p = 5 ohm,cm was
irradiated with neutrons with an average energy of 2 Mev and an,lntegral flux in-
tensity of 1018 neutrons/CM2. The temperature of the specimen in the reactor did not
*exceed 100C. The investigation showed that the absorption band at A = 1.8 v is
apparently not linked to residual impurities whose concentration does not exceed
1015 cm-3. The concentration of centers responsible for this absorption, calculated
using the Kravets integral, should be approximately 2 X 1017 cm-3. Numerous defects-
Si vacancies caused by irradiation-play an important role in the creation of these r
centers. It is possible also that hydrogen or carbon) whose concentration in the

the band at A 1.8 V, It is ;GS-4'-WPrd, however, that the band at A a 1.8 p arif3es Eli
a result of the transition of an electron from the valence bandto the level of
Ec -OAO ev. The absorption at A - 12 p is explained by the existence of Si-A-centerr
Si-vacancies, created by neutron irradiation, even at room temperature cannot produce
stable centers because of high mobility. The Si-A-centers are created when the Si-
vacancies are attached to oxygen atoms. Orig. art, has: 3 fo.mulas and 4 figures.
