time. In this connection, the authors propose a method of constructing the region of permis-
sible values of the variable parameters of ACS elements, as based on the criterion of effect-
iveness. Thus if the state of ACS at every time instant may be represented by a n-variate
vector whose components are the parametera of ACS, then the satisfaction of die effectiveness
criterion requires that this vector remain within the confines of a specified region, with
failure to adhere to'these confines being regarded as an unfavorable event. It is shown that the
magnitude of the effectiveness criterion is determined by integration over a time region,
whose results characterize the system's ability to serve during a specified In arval of time,
and by integration over the region of the system's parameters, whose results determine the
system's ability to assure a specified quality. The pertinent calculations reqti;re using digital
computers. The employment of the effectiveness criterion represents a new approach to the
design and construction of ACS and makes it possible to predict the probabilistic deviations of
parameters in the process of operation and to formulate the problem of deto;L.alaing the opti-
mal parameters. Or1g. art. has: 4 figures, 9 formulas.

ABSTRACT: This Aulthor Certificate presents a converter-stabilizer using tran-
sistars in a circuit with a common collector. The design simplifies the circuit
and increases its reliability. The stabilization of the output voltages is accom-;
plished as a result of combining (in the switching transistors) the functions of
switching and stabilization. To do this, two diodes are introduced in Vie con-
verter circuit. The diodes are connected in opposition betwoen the bases of the
transistors. The midpoint between the diodes is connected throDgh a stabilitron
with the center tap of the transformer primary winding.

ABSTRACT: Much attention has been given to metal saving in deter-
mining the ec-onomic expediency of new-type rolled shapes.
Therefore, the authors propose a method of calculating
the saving of metal whLch results from the substitution
of enli htened beams according to State Standards (GOST
8239-56~ for standard 1-beams (OST 10016-39) using the
following equation:

authors assume that distribution of section moduluz..W

This assumption may not. be absolutely precise, but
deviations from uniformity of W in different profiles
would increase or decrease saving ver slightly.

With reference,to the use of enlightened I-beams the
authors arrive at~the following conclusionss (1) The
14% saving cal6ulated by L. L. Zusman (see "Saving of
Ferrous Metals,-" Metallurgizdat, 1958 (Ref 4) and Stall,
1956,-Nr 12 (R6f 5)) approximates actual possible
econoray. (2) A saving of metal amounting to 10-13%
for the entire Soviet Union is feasible. (3) mean
metal saving is somewhat higher by including lettered
profiles (11.8%), indicating that the selection of
lettered profiles Inthe variety of shapes according
to the new standard has become more rational. In a

ABSTRACT: -Gas discharge tubes are already used at micro-wavelengths
as noise sources, attenuators and phase shifters. They
may also boused as detectors and mixers which are free from
overloading, mechanically stable and suitable for any mode
of propagation. The present study was made on type MN-3
and,DIN-6 miniature lamps (the filling is not stated) in
standard rectangular guide at 9375 Mols. The static charac-
teristics of the lamps are in Figure 1, together with the
load line for the feed resistor (31 krj. When microwave
power is absorbed the DC conductance increases. For the
MN-3, 10 mW incident power, V.S.W.R. = 1.5 , discharge
current 1 mA, the change in conductance is approximately
-7
10 -ohm. The microwave arrangement Is in Figure 2, using

is Figure 3, where the discharge tube may be compared with
a DKS-4 mixer crystal (back/front ratio 100). A detection
characteristic is in Figure 4. When the steady current is
high.enough the curve is square-law and power may be
measured. Detection senBitivities were compared with the
input sq!iare wave modulated at 1 kc/s. Observations on the
type EO-6 oscillograph showed positive and.negativo ppalcs
on the detected signal at the edges of the square wave.
The conversion loss of an MN-6 lamp was measured with
an intermediate frequency of 50 C.P.S. Figure 5 shows it
to be comparable with that of the crystal. Noise tempera-
ture was also measured between 3 and 24 Mc/s intermediate
frequency. The lamp is "cooler", the figure being
associated with the cathode space, there being no positive
column. Table 1 compares the noise temperatures of lamp
and vacuum diode at 23 Me/s. A smoothing fac-tor, a , is
deduced. These lamps have certain drawbacks: the shape

ABSTRACT: The authors report on their observations of soldiers
suffering from pathological changes of the tibia te-
la ossea, caused by load. They conclude, that
"march" periostitis of the tibia is a variety of
functional pathology of the sustentacular-kinetic
apparatus and is to be found among young first year
soldiers, usually aftor carrying heavy loads for a
long time. Serious cases require hospitalization.
X-ray investigations tire the beat way to control the
pathologic development. Careful medical control

TITLE: Worn, Milling Cutters With Elongated Profile for Hobbing Multiple-
-Spline Shafts
PERIODICAL; Metalurgia 91 Construclia de Magini, 1960, No. 9, pp. 822 - 825
TEXT: The article presents a brief study on worm type milling cutters used
almost exclusively for hobbing multiple-spllne shafts. The advantages of these
milling cutters are: high productivity, uniform dimensions of all pieces, and good
divinion Qf the splines. The disadvantages are: high cost and difficult machining
of the worm type milling cutter, distortion of the tool profiles if not exactly
sharpened, etc. The worm tape milling cutters have a curvilinear profile which
generates by hobbing the rectilinear faces of the 7plines. Since not all splines
can be hobbed, themultiple-spline shafts have been standardized to 3 types: lij~ht
aeries "STAS 1768-50", medium fierios "STAS .1765-50", and heavy serloa "STAS 1770-51
plus two spocial types for machine -tools. The light and the medium series can be
hobbed easier since they chiefly satisfy two conditions: 1) the ratio

and 2) P - 2%ax-gO, in which P is the circular pitch of the spline on the rolling
diameter and xmax the abscissa of the profile of the worm type milling cutter, cor-
responding to the maximum height. Mu Itiple -spline shafts which do not satisfy tj,.e
first conditions can not be machined by normal worm type milling cutters, but ohly
with worm type milling cutters with elongated profile. Shafts which do not satisfy
the second condition can not be hobbed at all. For the generation of rectilinear
faces of the splines, the teeth of the worm type milling cutters should have a con-
jugate profile respecting the driving law, according to which the common normal of
the successive contact points at the two profiles should pass through a ftxed
rolling point located on a line which connonts the rotation centers. The deriva-
tion of the parametric equations of the conjugated profile is simple (Fig. 4). The
contact point of the prof lle is "a", the common normal is the straight line "C a, P"
which passes through the rolling point P. The expression of -the ordinate is de-
rived tot Y = (R sin)9 - b) sin/3, (1) anft the equation of the abscissa is finallyz

cutter with complete profile and central clearing used in the machining of a 10 Yx
~x 32 x 40mm shaft from the heavy series "STAB 1770-50". The experiments supplied
satisfactory results. These types of worm milling cutters can be used especially
for the machining of torsion pistons and shafts. An interesting case is represented
by a multiple-spline shaft vith asymmetrical splines (Fig, 9). IvIorm type milling
cutters with complete profile and central clearing are superior to any other worm,
type milling cutter, since they generate the rectilinear faces down to the root
radius of the spline, without hollowing its root. These milling cutters can be

TITLE: The "Fox Chase" Contest (Sorevnovaniya "lovlya lis")
PERIODICAL-. Radio, 1957, Nr 4, pp 16-18 (USSR) %
ABSTRACT. The article explaining various details of the "fox-chase" contest is
written by the winner of such a contest in 1956 in Belgrad, Yugoslavia. The
first "fox chase" was organized in Yugoslavia, in Lyublyana, in 1954. Every
five minutes or less, the fox sends its signals which last from thirty to sixty
seconds. The starting distance between the hunters and the fox is from two to
seven km. The secrecy conditions of the contest are explained in detail. Con-
siderable difficulties for a hunter may be created by reflection of "fox" waves
by various high objects, such as hills, groves, metal constructions, telegraph
lines, etc. For a very sly fox, a narrow radiation -pattern antenna is i ecom-
mended; it should send its beams against a highly reflecting object. Recommen-
dations for the fox transmitter and hunter receivers are given. The traftiamlftter
should have a highly stabilized frequency, A battery-supply super regenerative -
type receiver should operate with a small-size directional antenna. It is rec-
commended that all adjustments and tuning be done outdoors in an open place.

theory. Two separatei examples of nuclear thermal production in a concrate wall are
cited and the temperature field in the concrete wall of a nuclear reactor cooled

the future development of nuclear reactors and particularly the rise in their thermal
pover will greatly increase the need for exact determination of thermal stresses in as
much as the nuclear thermal stress is of higher magnitude than the combined static and
