Improving on Kcppen's method and formula to calculate fog frequency in hours from long-term 3-hr observations, accurate determination of mea.n annual fog frequency variations (mean monthlyfog frequencies in hours) in the North German inland plain by com- putation of annual occurrence -estimates was shown. TITLE On the Relationship between th* Processes of Stripping and the Production of a Compound Nucleus on the Occasion of ReactLon with Deuterons. PERIODICAL Zurn.eksp.i teor fis, 30, fasc.6, 1013-1016 (1956) Issued: 8 / 195~ reviewed: 10 / 1956 26 p)jjg27 The relationship of those reactions 6h the nucleus Mg (d, is hexe osti- mated by comparison of the yields of those nuclei w4gh are produced on the occasion of d,p-processes and d,a-proceeses on an Mg 27 nucleus as well .as on the occasion of n,p-processes and n,a-processes on an Al nucleus. For the purpose of a more accurate quantitative estimation of the relative prob&biliti,96 of the two mechanisms mentioned in the title two reactions are selected (one of them with deuterons and the other with any other data as e.g. neutrons), in which one and the same compound nucleus is produced. The radioactive nuclei B 1 and B 2 created in connection with the reactions selected on this occasion had decay periods which, from the point of view of measuring technique, were favorable. The ratios of the quantities of radioactive nuclei B 1 and 3 2 produced in the targets by irradiation with deuterons and neutrons were determined from the fading curves Of radioactivity. It is true that: Cf(d9p)/d(d,a)=(cr(d,P) +Cf(d,p)strip -~F)/cf(d,a)=N and d(n,p)/1d(n,a) *-N Here c.n. 1 2- on. refers to a compound nucleus, strip. to a stripping process, and F denotes the term due to the interference between the two terms. As the decay of tho compound Zurn.ekep.i teor.fis, 3q, fanc.6, 1013-1016 (1956) CARD 2 / 2 PA - 106 nucleus does not depend on the manner in which it was produced, it is true that d(d,p) c.n. /d(d,a)-d(n,p)/a(n,a) and herefrom follows (d(d,. p) strip+F)/cr(d, p) cone X2 (N 1-N 2)A2 . This is correct only if the coqpound nuclei produced by the capture of a deuteron and of a neutron have the same exoi- tation energies. However, also if these conditions are natiefiod with accuracy, it is possible that inaccuracies occur as a recult of the influen-.%e exercised by broad overlapping levels. No resonance phenomena, were, by the way, found. The following two reactions were selected in this case: 26 2 27 27 + p b1g + P 27 Mg + D Al . + n Mlg~ A Na 24 + a -11~~ wa ~-T, + !!,X -The ratios of-radioactivities f ound ate represented in d1agrams as' functions of the deuteron energy. In order to7obtain neutrons with unif6r.m enjjrj,,ies the- re-, 2 2 action D + D was used. As a deuteron target a ciroonium layer iriadiated for a long time with slow deuterons(0,8-.MeV) was used. On-the occasion of reaction with deuterons and reaction with neutrond-the proton_ yield inc reaaes as against the yield of a-particles as a result of a-det~-_!~_-Ze,of deuteron energy. The ratio (d + Wd has maximum deuteron energies of from strip c.n. 1 to 2 MeV and a value of 8 to 9. INSTITUTION: Radium Institute of the-Academy of Science ZEREKIDZES I.I.
