Most of the data were obtained. from borehole measurements, with some obtained by the reflected wavd method. ' The media -:re: 1) continental deposits with longitudinal wave velocities of 1600-2500 m/sec, 2) solidified chemogenic and carbonateous sediments with longitudinal wave velocities- of 3000-6000 m/sec; and 3) the upper part of the chemogenic sedimentary seritm in which the longitudinal wave velocities ranged between 400--3000 m/sec. Three com-, ponent seismographs having mechanical contact with the borehole casings and vide-band amplifiers were employed. tongftudinal and transverse" waves with nearly equELI amplitudes were produced by mechanical shocks tangent to the ground surface. The Card .1/2 ACC NRt AT0050t5 amplitude graphs for the upper weathered layer of the cwtonle rocks. [Irkutsk amphitheater indicate that the damping factor tends toward a limiting value of 2.7 for both longitudinal and transverse waves, with a value of 2.4 for the bedroc1c under the weathered layer. Tabulated values of the damping factor m range from 2.4 to 2.7, which agree well with the values obtained in various regions of North America. The chlorophyll content was determined by spectrophotometry 36, 72, and 120 h after nitrogen top-dressing; it was found to increase sharply' with increasing nitrogen dose and continued expos*are, and was appreciable after 36 h already, while the increase in weight was still insignificant. Administra- tion of nitrogen at various stages of plant development showed that the highest chlorophyll content was reached for maize at the early stage of development dur- Card 1/2 S/216/63/000/001/004/004 Dynamics and rate of formation of chlorophyll .... Ao66/A126 ing vigorous formation of leaves, while the individual stages of barley did not differ markedly. The chlorophyll content of all plants depended largely an the addition of nitrogen. The content of carbohydrates diminished with increaeing chlorophyll content, and the consumption of carbohydrates was dependent on.the dose and time of nitrogen top-dressing. A comparison with the controls indicat- ed that the content of carbohydrates decreased after the administration of ni- trogen, but rose again later on. This proves that the enhanced initial consump- tion of carbohydrates is accompanied by a general stimulation of plant growth and assimilation. There are 7 tables. Flight crews in southern., parts'of the country, like speciali8ts working in so called hot shops, e.g., steei 'welders, open hearth plant workers, and so forth, are often subjected to the effects of *.high ambient air pressures. In view of the practical implications of the problbm and the inadequacy of its treatment in. literature, attempts were made to study thel functional capacity of humans ex- vposed for fairly long periods to high temperature conditions. Three series of investigations were conducted. Unclothed iSubjects were exposed for an hour to air.temperatures of 440.C-~-__ Card 1/3 'ACC NRi AT603 560 (serieb 1), 460C (series 2), and for 30 Tnin to air temperature of ,480C (series 3). Relative humidity in the. thermochamber was kept -between 1576 and 2516, and velocity of air movement between 0. 1 and-0.2 m/sec. Work capacity was evaluated by means of correction tablet itests (A. A. Genkin et al. (1963)], grip strength dynamometry, and-1 ~a graphic test [Frukuda (1959)]. Visual analyzer function was studied by determining the electrical excitation threshold of the eye, flicker'fusion frequency, and the information transmission capacity -of the visual analyzer [F. P. , Kosmolins1dy, Ye. A. Derevyanko .(1962), A. A. Genkin et al. (1963)]; vestibular analyzer function was :studied by determining the duration of postrotational stagmus* and I ny -the counterrotation illusion, and also the area of displacement while, walking in place with eyes closed [Frukuda (1959)]. In addition, pulse and respiration frequencies, electrocardiograms, blood pres sure, and body and skin temperature at twelve points were recorded during all experiments, and, some of the components of heat ex-, change were calculated. Not counting the control group (6 men),. experiments were conducted on 39 subjects, 14 in series 1, 13 in series 2, and U in, series 3.. It was established that even a .Card 2/3 ACC NR1-_'AT66306d_--__'__'_ to an air temperature of 4140C decreased work .60 min exposure capacity (error increase of 2.416 on the correction test,:14.91/6 on the graphic test, and so forth); the information transmission capacit.Y of the visual analyzer decreased by 13.5014; decreases were also seen in the electrical excitation threshold of the eye and in the ~Weigght of the subjects (by 200 g); increases were seen in body ,temperature (by 0.3C), the frequency of cardiac contractions '(by 141min), and so forth. In serics 2 and 3, human functional ;capacity showed a 'sharp drop) which was characterized by moro -pronounced shifts in a number of investigated functions, Thus,. :at +60C the number of errors increased by 15.61a; at +80C, by 5 OR; an d r, o forth. The above data show that even a single hour's exposure of t ban uncAad human to a temperature of +40C affects work capacity, this rnust be taken.into account in organizingJindustrial medical support and in devising measures to imRrove work conditions and work schedules in hot climates. The authors set up the perti- nent fbrmulas for z7. stressed metallized synthetic film (assumed absolutely flexible) under the action or gas pressure (V. He concludes that the initial position of the metalliled film de-tsimines the subsequent value of the permissible air pressure Fmax in the chamber and the maximum concentration of the solar rays at the focal point or the optimum gas pressure in the chamber. Title Comparing efficienoy of automated eyolic and continuously-operating concrete plants Periodical Gidr. stori.,, 5,. 5-9o 1955 Abstract The article gives a description of the layout and operation of automated conorete plants with vertical0 sectional ODnerete mixers VL+'h a lp200 and 2,400 1 capacity operating cycllcl~. A comparison is made with the type of concrete plant which operates continuously and reportedly with greater efficiency, Tables and, graphs with data on the latter are given. The authors strongly xeccamend wider use of the continuously-operating concrete plants at constructions. Three diagrams.
