To discover the affect of surface-active substances on the course of deforn-ition during stretching of mica at various stages--u One to rupture,, aspecial setup waa prepared for the experiments* art'was for stretching.the samples and measuring the stress, and another for p moostwing the elongation of the apocimen, Stretching was of-footed by attaching 4 vessel in which watercould be added at the desired rate. Loading rate ranged from .17 to 100 g/sec. A simple combination mochanical-optical setup was used for measuring elongation. Specimens were stretched in air., in water, and in a solution of isovW1 alcohol--both dilute and saturated, :Four zonas of deformation were observeds J Card 1/2 W ;J' D L 10240-67 ACC NRt' AT601651S 1)., elastic, with no residual s train ,2) plastic., in which a slight dependence of residual strain on preceding, streas was notcdj - )) hardening, in which residual strain remains constant and is independent of prece ding stress,, and 4) rapidly increasing plastic strain, terminating in rupture., Results have been tabulated and graphed. The effect of the iaowWl alcohol--a surface-active agent--was notable. It was found that during deformation in the presence of the surface-active agent the molecules of the agentpenotrated the crystal chiefly through.cracks along the surfaces of perfect cleavagep and they were.adoorbod on the surfaces of internal defects, increasing their effective surfaced This deor'e'ased.the elastic modulus and lowerod!the elastic limits .During deformation in the surface-active medium, when stretching verv slightly exceeded tile elastic limit, the zone of:pre-existing imperfections expanded at such a rate tl~at the mica was ruptured by several applications and removals of the stresso It is Concluded that the adoorbent effect of surface-active substances is greater during shear deformation and, espeoially# during vibration of the mica* Orige art* hast, 6 figures.,, 3 tables, mid I formla. Nauchno-tekh o-va chernoy metallurgii, 1957, Vol n 18, pp 532-537 ABSTRACT: The present organization of open-hearth departments (OHD) suffers from.extreme decentralization of branches of the op- eration resulting in a.long chain of management, an increase in theinumberdof managerial, engineering, and technical personnel, and complications in production rnanag'ement. The writers propose the compilation of unified standard organiza- tion charts for OHD envisaging elimination of unnecessary links in management by combining small OHD and doing away with the present Practice-,.9f excluding the slag dump and the mold-ca r-prepa ration 91j6ps from the purview of the OHD, and also of separating furnaces~within a department into blocks Card 1/21 and groups. The new accelerated schedules which were.drawn up for killed and Ti=iZ)g steels are shown and diso*ussed. The new schedules also involve revised provisions for the quicker removal of ingots from.the casting bayt stripping pperations, the-arrival of ingots at the pitsp traffic control.. Under the new scheme ingots arrive at the soaking pits at ift lbast 850 C The changes made in wage rates to correspond with the revised, .schedules are briefly mentioned and the improvements in trans- port and metal temperature and in blooming-mill productivity are tabulated.
