ABSTRACT: An improved method of direct synthesis hau been developed
for higher purity poly- and dingle crystalline rare earth metal
mono chalcogenides , HX, and sesquichalcogenides, H2K3, where M - La, Pr.
Ndt Ce and X - So Se, Te. The nonsl:oichlometric and low purity com-
pounds were obtained by the earlier used methodo, mainly becauee of
oxidation or contamination with the impurities from the container. A
two-step process developed by the authors excluded these two causes of
contamination. The first step of the process consisted in caacting
the rare earth metal shavings with chalcogen vapors at below 600C in

evacuated and hydrogen filled ampuls of thermally stable glass. In the
second step, the reaction product was either annealed by resistance
heating at t600-1800C in high vacuum to prepare macrocrystalline MX,
or annealed and melted by induction heating at 15DO-2000C also in hi gh
vacuum to grow by sublimation well developed HX single cryntals. e.g.,
LaS. Water cooling of the container (quartz ampul) was required in
this latter variant to prevent oxidation of KX. Preparation of poly--
crystall ine M2X3 ingots also required high temperature annealing and
raelting in an Induction furnace. but in argon atmosphere and without
cooling of the ampul. Lattice const&nts a of the Dol Ycrys ta 11 ine MX
were in good agreement with 11 tera ture data. In the cat3e of LaS, Fr5e.
And PrTo single crystals t6e, a values were determined with grearev
accuracy and were in good agr7ement with the ja val~jes of polycrystal-
line compounds. Electric conductivit7 data at 300K for MX were much
higher than literature data because of the higher purity of the products.
Electric resistivity of ?12X3 in the 104_101 ohm*cm range indicatqd a
