Title Possitility of the formation of /\O particles by protons with
energies UP to 700 Mev
Perio4ical Zhur. eksp. i teor. fiz., 29 September 1955, 265-273
Abstract The authors attempt to observe the formation of AO particles
during collision of protons with energies of 670 Mev with carbon
nuclei. In principle the experiments permitted them to record
Ao particles decaying according to the following scheme: A 0---)
n ' /to. They detected gamma rays from the decay of AO mesons by
means of a telescope consisting of scintillational and Cherenkov
counters. They find that the.cross section of formation of AO
particles has a value approximately equal or less than lo-31
cm2/nucleon.' They draw conclusions concerning the mechanism gov-
erning the formation of A particles. The authors thank V. V
Krivitskiy and A. I. Mukhin for assistance in setting up the col-
limator. Ten references, mainly western and to Otchet 1YaP AN

TITLE: An eight litre hydrogen
magnetic field
PERIODICAL: Pribory i tekhnika 1962~ 51-59
TEXT; A detailed description of the apparatus is given
Essentially it consists of two coaxial cylinders$ the infer space
being the working volume and the outer space'for temperature
control. The inner cylinder is of copper to improve heat
transfer and the outer cylinder, together, with ni*ost of the casing,
is constructed from lXl8H9T (lKhl8N9T.) stainless steel.
Observation ports at the ends of the inner cylinder consist of-
discs of-11 K-5 (LK-5) glass 40*mm thick and with an aperture of
i 280 min. Detailed drawings are given of the expansion apparatus
;and the associated two stage double acting electromagnetic valve.
The noitnal gas pressure for operating the expansion apparatus is
7 atm and the.degree of expansion can be altered by changing the

quantity of liquid in the hydraulic system. A detailed
schematic layout of the gas System is shown and constructional
idetails of the stereo-camera are given. The liquid nitrogen
supply system for the radiation shield and a 24 litre Dewar flask
for liquid hydrogen are'also described. The magnetic field in
the working volume is 12 kilo oersteds and is supplied by a
iStandard MC-4 NS-4) electromagnet. Preliminary cooling with
liquid nitrogen must be gradual and c6nsumes about 100 litres.
..Cracks were observed on the walls of the chamber when the cooling
time was less than 8 hours. 'The time to fill the working volume
Owith liquid hydrogen is about 3 hours and requires about-20 litreis.
During operation 2.5 to 3 litres/hour of liquid hydrogen are
rconsumed. A photograph of a typical track showing the elastic
~collision of a-ric~_ meson with hydrogen is shown. The chamber has
been used.satinfact.orily for 6 months during which time
stereo photographs were obta.ined. The expansion apparatus
:has performed about 70000 cycles without changing the bellows,
The dead time of the chamber does not exceed 2 see. There are 13 figures.

Periodical : Izv. AN SSSR, Otd. Tekh. Nauk 7, 132-136, Jul 55
Abstract : Reviews conclusions of Soviet literature on subject. Considers
influence of thickness, compactness, moisture content, rate of
freezing, inclusions, and mineral content of deformation. Con-
siders influence of configuration and compactness of individual
mineral components, with moisture-content slightly above plasticity
limit,, on volume increase during freezing and the influence of
external surface loading on deformation after thawing. Four
graphs. Ten references, all USSR.

- Seriya geograficheskaya,
ABSTRACT: The terms "Zero Curtain" and "Temperature Inertia of Soil",
which have been used in scientific literature, are discussed
and analyzed. The heat balance of a freezing soil laye-r can
be determined by tho formula A = B + C, where A is the heat
quantity liberated through the frozen ground into the at-
mosphere; B is the heat amount from the lower unfrozen layer
and C is the change of heat in the freezing soil. C was
characterized by Sumgin (Ref- 4) by the term "Zero Curtain",
which led to erroneous interpretations. Chekotillo Ref, 6)
used the term "Temperature Inertia of Soil", in order to de-
terminethe continuous stability of the soil temperature
during the winter period. The author rejects this term
stating that the condition of a body, without showing the
characteristics of movement or resistance to the movement,
Card 112 cannot be called inertia. It in concluded that both terms
JV/10-58-5
On the Terms "Zero Curtain" and "Temperature Inertia of Soil"
do not properly express the meaning of the respective coil-
cept and must be excluded from scientific terminology.
There is 1 schematic draring and 7 Soviet references.

work. In 1956 the AS USSR handed over the respective
technical 11terature on thin problem and In August 1957 it
Gent a colliaborator of the Institute for Frost InvestiGation
imeni V. A. Obruchev to assist in this work. In this
investigation a number of nature factors must be mentioned,
which exercize influence on the heat transfer in the system
atmosphere-,soil-upper layers of the crust of the earth. It
is noted that these tasks are very complicated.

by-ongineering-geocryclogy-viere i4acuased..Frozen ground contains
ice - by- which Ito special- oryogen:,o- texture is determined. Variatic,no
of temperature entail a variatiaL'of atrengthp especially by thawing.
The conference was-attended by ripresentatives of 68 scientific
and-other organizations. 1. A. Taytovich spoke about methods of
calculating the sagging, of -foundations caused by thawing. P-R Shvet9ov
gave a report on the-forming of frozen grounds containing ice. Re..
presentatives from Norillsk, Igarka, Yakutsk, Magadan, and Vorkutst
described-the results-they obtained by-investigations and spoke
about-the experience gathered in this field. The conference stressid
the necessity of-further investigating this problem. The Instituto
