ABSTRAM. Electron-photon showers were investigated in an ionization calorimeter ciln-1
sisting of the following components in order from the top: 13 cm C, 3 cm Fe, 8 t.-ayll
of Ionization chambers each followed by 5 cm Fe, 2 trays of chambers with no absorber
between, I cm re, 160 g/cm2 C, 3 ca Vb, and two trays of ch=bera separated and fol- I
lowed by 2 cm Ph. Showers Initiated by cosmic ray particles were regarded as electiont
photon shcy-ers If they produced ionization in at least one of the two uppermost trays
and no ionization ia the two trays beneath the laree carbon nbsorbor. Of 334 electrons
photon showers thus Identified, 152 had energies between 100 tnd 200 HOT. Vile loniza-1
tion versus depth ourves for theae showers were normaticed to a primary energy of 11-D

BeV and averaged, and the average curve was compared with theoretical curves calciola-
ted for different aasumed values of the radiation length in iron. Good agreement was
obtained with the curve based an a radisticyn Length of 12.6 C/cm2. This value of the
radiation length in iron was confirmed by comparing the obaerved depth of maximum
shower development with calculated values. The fluctuxtion (ratio of the mean Hquare
to the square of the mean) in the number of particles in the showers as a function of
depth was compared with the calculated curve of R.H.Gerasimova Oh. eksperin. i titer.
fit. , 43, 500 (1962) ; 44, 240 (1963)). Good agreement was found at depths less V=
23 radiation units. but at greater depths the observed fluctuations were much lesis

Abstract : Neuro-muscular apparatus of m. quadriceps In cats and rabbits consists
of two parts functioning i:i a different manner. The straight head
fundamentally functions in the manner of tonus; the lateral head re-
sponds in the manner of tetanus to to excitation of its motor nerve.
The difference between them is relative and apparently consists of
degree of dissimilarity in their functional mobility. Their mobility
is changeable to certain extent, offering possibility for re-formation
of their activity. Graphs. Three Soviet and two non-Soviet references.

Upon further Intensification of the current to
a point of excitation of the tonic nerve fibres,
the pessimal relaxation was replaced by a new
contraction, now of tonic nature. This contrac-
tion dIffered from tetanus by the smoothness of
Its development and course,, by lack of fatigua-
bIlItyO by Its plasticity and visible absence of
pessimum upon Increase of the stimulation. Atro-
pine (1-.2,000) suppressed, first, the second
optimum of the contraction of the rectus abdomin-

Abstract: of mixed muscles is really of the tonic type,
ElectrophysiologIcal data also confirm the tonic
nature of the second optimum of contraction of
mixed muscles. A second optimum can also be obA
served In purely tetanic muscles. This secondary
contraction,, as distinct from the tonic contrac-
tion,, began with a strong and brisk development
which., however, the Intensity of the stimulation
remaining unchanged, passed Into pessimal relaxa-
tion. A second optimum can be produced also by
increasing the frequency of the stimulation. It
is postulated that the origin of the second tetanic

Two cases in neonates are described, Case 1: in a 2-day-old boy marked abdomin-
al swelling necessitated the creation of an artificial anus In the sigmoid; spawn-
like masses were discharged. Death occurred after 2 hours. Autopsy revealed
megacolon, enlargement of the urachus and the bladder. atrophy of the left sterno-
cleidomastoid muscle, Histological examination showed a marked swelling of the
wait of the large Intestine, especially of that of the caccum and the descending
colon. The glands are described as club-shaped; there was marked swelling of
goblet cells. Numerous spawn-like mucin granules were found in the appendix,
the iumen of which was partly dilated and partly stenosed. Case It: there was
atresta of the anus, for which in artificial anus had to be made. Meconiurn with
spawn-like granules was discharged, The patient was soon discharged from the
hospital., In this care, too. a congenital defective anlage was assumed to exist.

lity for patients with fractures of bones of the
lower extremity is examined. The primary sti-
mulus in the reflex mechanism of contracture is
probably painful stimulation. Injecting a solution of
navocaine into the region of the fracture or into the
cavity of the knee joint reduced contracture. Immo-
bilization of the extremity is the second essential'

contracture. Th the first phase immobilization

of the centers. In the second phase immobilization
eontracture is maintained basically at the expense
of structural ebanps taking place reflexly in the
joints and muscles of the extremity as a result of
the disruption of normal movements and trophic
disturbances.
